Two boys reported missing in Texas County were found dead Monday morning in the Big Piney River west of Licking about twelve hours after they were reported missing from their home. According to the Missouri State Water Patrol, 4-year old Wyatt E. Bagley and 7-year old Jesse J. Bagley, were last seen around 4:00 pm Sunday evening and water patrol officers were contacted at 6:45 pm to assist in the search for the brothers. Limited water searches took place throughout the night and at first light Monday morning Water Patrol Officers launched their boats and started dragging operations.  Jesse’s body was found at 7:10 am by dragging the river and at 7:30 am Wyatt’ s body was spotted by a Highway Patrol Helicopter and was pulled from a log jam by water patrol. 

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. For the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5450 and 6070 and a tree would be removed from Dent County Road 5610. Purcell also said that crews would be installing culverts on Dent County Road 5220. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2360 and 2550. Larson also said that grading would be done and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2370 and 3180 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3140. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles, and Commissioners Purcell and Larson signed a letter of support in response to the National Telecommunications & Information Administration and the USDA’s request to get broadband Internet to rural areas. There is four billion dollars of stimulus money available through the American Reinvestment & Recovery Act to do this, and the NTIA and USDA are asking local county officials to send letters supporting this proposal. FEMA Officials Lynn Allison and Rick Losordo came by the meeting to discuss with the Commission “debris teams” that will be in Dent County next week to estimate the cost the county paid out to remove debris from county roads due to the May 8^th storm. As of last week the county had removed about six to seven thousand cubic yards of debris and still has more to haul in. Losordo said that each district would have a representative to go around the roads that have not had all the debris removed yet and estimate the cost the county will have to pay to remove it.  Commissioners Purcell and Larson will meet with the “debris teams” next week and will show them around each district and each dump site. After all estimates have been calculated they will then be submitted to FEMA for 75% reimbursement to the county. Also at the meeting the Commission agreed to set the annual Tax Levy Hearing for August 24^th at 10:00. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public. 

An accident occurred at 8:30 Monday morning in Crawford County three miles north of Viburnum on Highway Y. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Harley Davidson driven by 48-year old William Sutherland of Viburnum was traveling northbound on Highway Y when the Harley Davidson struck an animal in the roadway.  The motorcycle then traveled off the right side of the roadway and turned over. Sutherland suffered moderate injuries and was transported by the Quad County Ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Harley Davidson sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Abney’s Wrecker.

An accident happened at 1:15 Friday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 19 about a mile south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 18-year old Devin Colyer of Springfield was traveling southbound on Highway 19 and slowed for another vehicle. At that time, a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer driven by 19-year old Savanna Watson of Brookfield, slowed for the Silverado and was struck from behind by a 1997 Dodge Ram driven by 44-year old Damon Sturguess of Saint Catherine, which then caused the Mercury to strike the Silverado. Watson suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Hospital by the Salem ambulance. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge Ram and Mercury Mountaineer sustained moderate damage while the Chevrolet Silverado sustained minor damage. All the vehicles were driven from the scene.  

The 8th Dent County Historical Society 2009 Dinner Speaker Series will be held tonight at 6:15 at the TCRC featuring, Dr. Edgar D. McKinney and he will be speaking on the History of Bluegrass Music. Dinner will begin at 5:00 at the Pizza Inn in Salem, at a cost, and then the speaker series will follow. The program is free and open to the public. Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Funeral services for Edwin “Leon” Lunn of Salem, age 72, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Graveside services for Jane Gibbs of Salem, age 53, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Sybil Joyce Burnham of Salem, age 82, will be held Wednesday at 3:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be Wednesday at 2:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Eugene “Gene” Hanks of Hill City, Kansas, formerly of Steelville, age 73, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 8:00 with a Masonic service at 7:00. Interment will be in the Callaway Memorial Gardens at 2:00 in Fulton.
