Thursday morning, the Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting without Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles, who was not in attendance as he was attending a CCAM meeting. Commissioner Gary Larson was appointed the acting Presiding Commissioner for the meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4210, 5620 and 5700; while materials will be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 2470. He stated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5180 and that ditch work will be done on Dent County Road 5140. He went on to say that a worker would also be screening brown rock. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4040, 4300 and 4310. He said that a pipe would be installed on Dent County Road 2080, and that materials would be added to Dent County Roads 2070 and 2080. Larson further stated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2070. He also attended a Council for a Healthy Dent County meeting on Thursday. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that she was very happy with the 41.26% voter turnout in the Primary and felt the election went very smooth. She wanted to again remind anyone that has moved within Dent County or moved to Dent County since they last voted, to please call her office at 729-4144 or drop by her office in the Dent County Courthouse so that you can get the proper change of address and know what precinct you will vote in for the General Election. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
In May of this year, the Licking Police Department began an investigation into a report of an individual in possession of child pornography. During the investigation, a cellular telephone was seized from the suspect. An investigator from South Central Missouri Computer Crimes Task Force examined the phone, which was revealed to contain more than 50 images of suspected child pornography. On August 7th, Texas County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Anderson charged 42-year old Phoebe A. Barnum of Licking with possession of greater than 20 images of child pornography. Barnum was arrested on the warrant on August 9th and was transported to the Texas County jail and incarcerated, pending $400,000 bond. The charges which Barnum is accused are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.
An accident occurred at 2:57 Thursday afternoon in Phelps County on Route O about two miles south of Rolla that took the life of a Rolla man. According to the highway patrol report, a 2006 Ford F-150 driven by 36-year old David Shackelford of Rolla dropped off the right side of the roadway. Shackelford then overcorrected causing the vehicle to run off the left side of the roadway, overturn, and eject him. Shackelford was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead by Dr. Norman Petty at 4:04. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Ron Dishman Towing.
John L. Harris, a member of the General Sterling Price Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp of St. Louis, Missouri, will be the featured speaker at the Dent County Historical Society August Dinner Speaker Series at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room in downtown Salem, Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 6 p.m. Harris will give a power point presentation entitled "A Brief History of the 1st Infantry Regiment, of the 7th Division of the Missouri State Guard." The 1st Infantry Division was under General Edmund T. Wingo of Salem and included many men from Dent and surrounding counties. Free printed handouts of John's presentation will be available to anyone desiring a copy. Come listen to this knowledgeable fantastic speaker for some little known facts about the Civil War in Dent County. The Salem Tiger Football and the 12th Tiger Club would like to invite the public to a scrimmage tonight at the Salem High School Football Stadium beginning at 6:45. At 6:00 there will a Parent Meeting with Coach Schuchardt, and then after the Parent Meeting there will be a 12th Tiger Booster Club Meeting. Admission to the game will be a bottle of water or Gatorades for the players. After each away game, the 12th Tiger Booster Club provides a sandwich, chips and water/Gatorade. Adam Wainwright held the Giants to one run on five hits and struck out seven in seven innings as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 3-1 on Thursday. Jon Jay picked up his fourth straight multi-hit game and scored a run for the Cardinals, who have won five of their last seven and salvaged a four-game split. The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies tonight at Citizens Bank Park and you can hear it on KSMO at 5:30.
Billy Butler hit a three-run blast and finished a single short of the cycle as the Kansas City Royals topped the Baltimore Orioles 8-2 in the opener of a four-game set. Will Smith (3-4) held the early lead and limited Baltimore to two runs on six hits in seven innings, as the Royals cruised to their third straight win. The Royals and Orioles play again tonight.
Carli Lloyd scored both goals for the United States as they beat Japan in the gold medal game of women's Olympic soccer on Thursday, 2-1. The U.S. team has won four of the five Olympic tournaments since women’s soccer was adopted into the games, winning gold in 1996, 2004, and 2008 while taking silver in 2000. The U.S. now has 39 gold medals and 90 total medals, ten more than anyone else.
