An accident occurred Tuesday, August 9^th at 3:00 in the afternoon in Dent County on Highway 32 about 8 miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Mazda driven by 18-year old Stetson Hanning of Salem, crossed the center line and struck a 2000 Chevrolet driven by 17-year old Katurah Vaughn of Salem head on. Both Hanning and Vaughn suffered serious injuries and were flown by Air Evac to St. Johns Hospital in Creve Coeur. The Mazda and the Chevrolet were both totaled and towed by Whitakers Towing of Salem. Hanning was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

The Dent County Fire Protection District has released their reports. On Monday, August 1^st an alarm sounded at 10:36 in the morning to have an aircraft standby at the station. A total of seven firefighters responded to the call to provide manpower at the station. At 11:01 that same morning, an alarm sounded for a medical assist for the EMS crew in the 700 block of West First Street to a family dwelling in Salem. A total of seven firefighters responded to provide first aid and check for injuries. At 12:35 in the afternoon that same day, an alarm sounded for general cleanup for a vehicle accident on North Main Street. A total of five firefighters responded to provide manpower. On the same day at 12:54 in the afternoon, an alarm sounded for a medical assist for the EMS crew in the 500 block of East Ninth Street to a family dwelling in Salem. A total of five firefighters responded to provide manpower. At 9:32 that same evening, an alarm was sounded to have an aircraft standby at the station. A total of ten firefighters responded to the call to provide manpower at the landing zone. On Wednesday, August 3^rd an alarm sounded at 5:20 in the evening for a medical assist for EMS crews at the 700 block of East Center Street to a family dwelling in Salem. A total of four firefighters responded to provide emergency medical services. On Friday, August 5^th an alarm sounded at 8:42 in the evening for a medical assist for the EMS crew in the 2000 block of North Highway 19 to a family dwelling in Salem where the patient was transported to the fire department and then flow out by air evac. A total of 6 firefighters responded to provide manpower.

The 83^rd Annual Dent County Fall Festival gets underway today at The Commons on Highway 72. Food vendors will be open starting at 4:00 as a church service will be held at the Livestock Barn to start the festivities at 6:00. Sonshine Amusements, Inc. will be providing the carnival this year with a number of rides including a Merry-Go-Round, Bouncing Boats, Mini Motorcycles, Dalmation Bounce, Batman Obstacle Course, Go Gator Roller Coaster, the Zumur Swings and a Giant Slide. The carnival will also get underway at 6:00. At 7:00, the Pie Auction will be held at the Youth Building followed by the Dent County Baby Pageant, Little Mr. And Miss Dent County Pageant, and the Jr. Mr. And Miss Dent County Pageant on the main stage. There is no admission fee at the gate for tonight’s activities at the Fall Festival.

The City of Salem has begun the necessary steps in order to get a clear title to the Old Middle School Property at 10^th and Hickory Streets in Salem as City Attorney William Camm Seay last week filed a civil suit against the Western Cherokee. Since there have been two claimants to the property in the last year, the city is looking for a court ordered deed to ensure a clean title to the property which would be necessary for the city to have before the cleanup of the property can be initiated. The action to file the civil suit was approved by the aldermen in closed session at their July 18^th meeting. The Western Cherokee has 45 days to file an answer or appear and defend an action to retain title, or a default judgment will be entered against them according to the petition. Early this year, Tim Spencer representing the Western Cherokee submitted a letter to the alderman through the city attorney at the time, Nanci Wisdom, to return the property to the city. The city deeded the property to the Western Cherokee in 2004 with a Special Warranty Deed that included the stipulation that the Western Cherokee restore, improve and perform constant maintenance of the property. The city notified the Western Cherokee last July of their failure to uphold the covenants of the deed, giving the Western Cherokee one year to correct the situation, but little repair work or improvements have been made to the property at all.

The Salem Tiger Football Teams and the 12^th Tiger Club would like to invite the public to a scrimmage this Friday at 6:00 at the Salem High School Football Field. Admission to the game will be bottles of Gatorade or water. These will be given to the players after the away games.

Casey McGehee doubled in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, and Milwaukee widened its lead atop the NL Central with a 5-3 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals. David Freese had two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals, who faltered on a chance to possibly grab the opener of this three-game series. The Cardinals, who had 11 hits but left 10 men on base, had a four-game winning streak broken. Gerald Laird had two RBI and Corey Patterson the other as the Cardinals fell four games behind the Brewers. Edwin Jackson gave up six hits in six innings pitched and three runs, two of them earned. The Cards and Brewers play again tonight at 6:40 on KSMO Radio.

Evan Longoria hit a homer and drove in all four runs to back James Shields' fourth shutout of the season, as the Tampa Bay Rays blanked the Kansas City Royals, 4-0, in the second test of a four-game series. Jeff Francis (4-12) allowed four runs on five hits over seven innings for the Royals, who have lost the first two games of this series and four of five overall. He struck out four and walked zero. The game lasted just 1 hour and 53 minutes, setting the Tampa Bay record for the shortest nine-inning game. Kansas City went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and stranded five. The Royals and Rays will play again tonight.

Funeral services for David Olen Gibson Sr. of Viburnum, age 51, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Viburnum. Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.

Graveside services for Donna Faye Levin of Salem, age 54, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Hew Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Robert F. Eaves of Overland Mo., age 87, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 9:00. Interment will in the Enke Cemetery in Lenox with Full Military Honors.
