Thursday morning at approximately 05:30, the Dent County Sheriff's Office received a call regarding a man and his two children, ages 7 and 8, who were missing. The father had left to pickup the children around 9:00 the previous evening and had not returned home. Some information was provided to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office that the vehicle may have traveled along the Cedar Grove area. A deputy responded to the Cedar Grove area and located the vehicle partially submerged in the Current River after it had washed over the side of the bridge. The father and his two sons had escaped from the vehicle and spent the night huddled together inside a public restroom. No one suffered any injuries, but they were extremely cold and wet. The deputy transported the father and his two sons to the hospital for evaluation.
The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Charlie Plank was in asking about getting flood insurance for his property. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell indicated that his district had received between seven to ten inches of rain over the past three days. He said road crews would be repairing and patch grading to make roads passable where they could until the waters recede. He said that a tree was down across Dent County Road 4080, and that persons should avoid trying to cross the bridge at Cedar Grove until the waters go down. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that his crew would be doing emergency patching where needed until things dry out. Both commissioners did state that work crews would be on call this weekend if needed. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting, Public Housing Authority Board meeting, the MRPC External Relations Committee meeting and the MRPC meeting Thursday night. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that registered voters would be receiving a new voter ID card in the mail soon as required by state statutes. The card will replace any old voter ID cards that have been sent in the past and will be yellow in color. If the information on the card is wrong or you do not receive a card in the near future, contact her office at 729-4144. She also said that she and the treasurer balanced on all accounts for July; and she said that her office, the Assessor and Collector balanced on all abatements and add-ons for July. At 10:00, Commissioner Larson opened up requests for qualifications concerning the building of a bridge on Dent County Road 3210. Four companies were interested in the project. They included Great Rivers Associates from Springfield; Allgeier, Martin and Associates from Rolla; Cook, Flatt and Strobel from Topeka, Kansas; and Schafer Kline and Warren, Inc. from Lenexa, Kansas. The commissioners will review the packets and discuss the qualifications with MoDOT representative Jenny Jones on how to proceed with the project that will be using BRO funds. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their August meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the July meeting, the Board reviewed and approved bills, and signed file copies. The treasurer reported that as of July 31, 2013, 51.7% of the budget has been used, with 92% of the projected budget money already in. For the same time period last year, there was 70.3% of the budget used. In the calendar review it was noted that August 15th will be the monthly fire training and on August 26th the Salem Memorial District Hospital will hold a PHTLS class. During the monthly reimbursement report, there were 31 calls for the month of July including; three brush fires, two car fires, one dumpster fire, eight landing zone calls, eight calls for first responders, three calls for motor vehicle accidents, three mutual aid calls, one call for hazmat, and two calls for training. The total calls year to date is 215. In old business, the Board discussed parking lot repair options and in new business, the Board set the date for the tax levy meeting for Monday, August 19th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. Fire Chief Brad Nash then reported that hydrant mapping is completed with 330 total hydrants. Testing of the hydrants has begun and could be completed by the end of August, weather permitting. Nash also reported that there were a total of 297 fire call man-hours, 160 training man-hours, 123 hydrant mapping man-hours and 16 hydrant testing man-hours in July. He then presented the Board with a letter requesting the parking lot facilities for a BBQ fundraiser for Austin Reed, and the Board approved the request on the north side of the building. The Board then set their September meeting for Tuesday, September 3rd at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm and the regular meeting was then adjourned.
On August 12, 2013, from 7:00-8:00 pm, the University of Missouri Extension in Dent County will be offering a “Fall gardening” class, held at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory at 1200 W. Rolla Rd in Salem. The “Fall Gardening” course is designed to teach beginning gardeners the basics of extending the vegetable gardening season well into the fall and teach students about best management practices for improving their garden site in preparation for the following growing season. Patrick Greenwald, the Horticulture Specialist from the Phelps County Extension, will teach the course. The fee for the course is $6.00. Due to limited space and to ensure adequate program materials, participants are asked to pre-register and pay by August 8th, 2013. To reserve a seat call the Dent County Extension Center at 729-3196.

A.J. Ellis backed another strong start from Hyun-Jin Ryu with a three-run homer in the fifth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers went on to take a 5-1 victory from the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a four-game set. The Cardinals fell four games behind the front-running Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central race with their fourth loss in six games. David Freese accounted for three of the seven hits for St. Louis, while Carlos Martinez (0-1) suffered a loss in his first major league start. The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio at 6:40.
With Bruce Chen's 7 2/3 shutout innings leading the way, the Kansas City Royals continued their second-half surge with a 5-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a four-game series. Chen (5-0) permitted just five hits and a walk in another masterful performance that enabled the Royals to record their 14th win in 16 games. Billy Butler and Justin Maxwell each clubbed solo homers for Kansas City, who will play the Red Sox again tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Maxine Capps of Salem, age 82, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 Saturday. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Relay For Life.
Funeral services for Rainey Francis Callahan of Edgar Springs, age 79, will be held Monday at 11:00 at Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Poca Hollow Cemetery near Fremont, MO. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Memorial services for Jimmy D. Martin of Salem, age 54, will be held Tuesday at 10:00 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bridgeton. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Erin Johnson of Grand Junction, Colorado, formerly of Salem, age 30, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
