The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Sunday, July 22nd at 2:53 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the Casey’s General Store in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that two unknown males in a white Ford Focus pumped $38.36 in fuel and left without paying. Later that afternoon at 3:59, a vehicle was stopped due to the driver having an active warrant. The investigation led to the arrest of a 30-year old Salem male on three active Dent County warrants. He posted bond and was released. On Tuesday, July 24th at 12:56 in the early morning, an officer was dispatched to the area of Center and Pershing in reference to a suspicious person. That investigation led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem male on two fugitive warrants from Phelps County. He was incarcerated pending extradition. On Wednesday, July 25th at 8:43 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to Country Mart in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged two soda machines by attempting to drill out the locks and open them, causing around $550 in damages. On Thursday, July 26th at 9:24 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Salem Villa Apartments in reference to property damage. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown caused damage to buildings, outside light fixtures, and vehicles totaling approximately $2,044.34. Later that afternoon at 3:51, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 32-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued $14.41. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Friday, July 27th at 5:34 in the evening, an officer made contact with a 32-year old Salem female in the 100 block of North Martin who had an active warrant from Dent County. She was taken into custody, paid the fine, and was released. One of the top threats to Missouri’s hundreds of thousands of ash trees has extended its reach beyond the existing quarantine area. The Emerald Ash Borer has killed more than 50 million U.S. ash trees in the last 10 years and researchers have now found signs of the invasive insect near Kansas City as well as signs of an expanding population in southern Missouri. Emerald Ash Borers were also identified in Reynolds County last week through routine surveillance. The Missouri departments of Agriculture and Conservation work with federal staff from USDA Plant Protection and Quarantine and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as well as researchers at the University of Missouri to monitor Missouri’s forests and urban areas for signs of the insect, as well as to inspect incoming shipments of nursery stock which may harbor the borers. Representatives from those organizations, as well as other members of Missouri’s Invasive Forest Pest Council, will be collaborating on possible changes to Missouri’s Emerald Ash Borer Quarantine as a result of finding the insect in two new locations within the state this month. The group has already begun work on a survey to determine the extent of infestation in Platte and Reynolds counties. Those surveys will be ongoing throughout the summer and fall in a cooperative effort by local, state and federal agencies. Although the Emerald Ash Borer can fly short distances on its own, much of its spread is due to humans transporting it burrowed under the bark of firewood, logs and tree debris. Consumers are encouraged to use other native tree species, rather than Ash trees, in their landscape plantings and to purchase firewood harvested near their destination when traveling and camping. Individuals can also check their trees for signs of the Emerald Ash Borer using the online guide available at eab.missouri.edu and report concerns about their trees by calling (866) 716-9974.

The San Francisco Giants provided plenty of offense as Wednesday's explosion resulted in a 15-0 blowout win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Joe Kelly (2-5) surrendered seven runs, four earned, on nine hits over five-plus innings for St. Louis, which had won seven straight at home before dropping the last two. The Cards and Giants play again this afternoon and you can hear it on KSMO at 12:10.
Jeremy Guthrie pitched eight shutout innings to pick up his first win in a Royals uniform in a 2-1 triumph over the Chicago White Sox Wednesday night. Guthrie (1-3), who made his fourth start for Kansas City since being acquired from Colorado on July 20th, allowed five hits and fanned six without walking a batter. The right-hander, who is a combined 4-12 this season, picked up his first victory since May 31st against Houston. Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez homered off Jose Quintana, as the Royals took the rubber match of this three-game series. The Royals will start a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles tonight at Camden Yards.
In their final match together, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings beat fellow Americans Jennifer Kessy and April Ross in straight sets Wednesday night to capture their third straight Olympic beach volleyball gold. May-Treanor is retiring from the sport, which she has played with Walsh Jennings since 2001. The U.S. now has 34 gold medals and 81 total medals, four more than China for the lead.
The Salem Tiger Football and the 12th Tiger Club would like to invite the public to a scrimmage on Friday, August 10th at the Salem High School Football Stadium beginning at 6:45 pm. At 6:00 there will a Parent Meeting with Coach Schuchardt and then after the Parent Meeting there will be a 12th Tiger Booster Club Meeting. Admission to the game will be a water and Gatorades for the players. After each away game, the 12th Tiger Booster Club provides a sandwich, chips and water/Gatorade. Funeral services for Donald “Don” C. Hayes of Bunker, age 76, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Ohlman Missionary Baptist Church.
