The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that road crews would be out checking washouts and downed trees from the storms from the weekend and on Monday. Purcell stated that weather permitting, various chip and seal roads in District 1 will be patched. He went on to say that brakes would be replaced on Dent County Truck #71, and he would be in St. James for the MOBroadbandNow meeting today to discuss the results of the surveys received. Larson said that Dent County Road 3030 is being reopened, that material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2240 and 2120, and that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 2380 and 3240. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended a SCABA Board meeting Monday afternoon, and he will be attending the County Commissioners Association of Missouri meeting in Jefferson City all day on Wednesday and Thursday morning before attending a Public Housing Authority meeting and Transportation Advisory Committee meeting Thursday afternoon. He also reported that the county clerk and treasurer balanced on all accounts for the month of July. Dent County Assessor Brenda Bell brought in bids for a new computer software program to replace the current system they have. She asked for bids from Huber, Vanguard and VillaGSI, Inc. and the only complete bid she received was from VillaGSI that provides assessments for personal property, real estate as well as GSI mapping. The cost for the option she chose was $75,627 and that amount could be paid for in two installments: one-half this budget year and one-half in the next budget year with no interest charges. There is also a $3,000 annual maintenance cost to this system which is $3,900 less than the annual maintenance cost for the current system. Danny Gray with VillaGSI said that they are in 16 other counties in Southern Missouri and the installation could begin immediately with the personal property tax assessments being done in a few weeks while the Real Estate assessments would not be complete until February. He also said that their price also includes training. For the new software, the Assessor’s Office would need a new server which has been budgeted. The Commissioners approved the bid from VillaGSI, Inc. and they began work immediately. The commissioner’s also held a budget hearing to make changes to the road and bridge department budget to reflect the income from the grants from the Missouri Department of Conservation and the National Forest Service for the replacement of the Swiney Bridge as well as the additional expenses for engineering and the work. The adjustments did not change the bottom line of the budget. With no objections, the commissioners approved the revised road and bridge department budget. The board will meet again on Thursday at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Doe Run Company’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division and the Buick Resource Recycling Division have made a donation of $3,000 to the Viburnum Emergency Response Team, better known as VERT. VERT is committed to responding to catastrophic disaster situations in southeast Missouri. The donation allows the all-volunteer organization to conduct first responder training for VERT volunteers who will play a critical role in the initial response to earthquakes, floods and tornadoes in Iron County and throughout the state. Missouri frequently experiences severe weather, including three of the nation’s seven deadliest tornadoes. Safety and community support are top priorities for Doe Run. In may, Doe Run donated $24,500 to the Iron County Hospital helping the hospital become the first in the United States to receive the newest sterilizing technology. Earlier this year, the Buick Resource Recycling Division donated $4,000 in school supplies, food and clothing to Dent County elementary schools; and $3,000 went to the Dent County Sheriff’s Department to purchase full-face respirators allowing law enforcement officers to safely investigate situations involving chemical fumes. 

Registration for new students to the Salem R-80 William Lynch Elementary and Upper Elementary Schools will be held today at the elementary buildings from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Registration at the junior high and senior high schools will be today for grades 7 and 12; August 10 for grades 8 and 11; and August 11 for grades 9 and 10.  The time will be from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM each day. Free and Reduced meal applications will be distributed to all Salem R-80 students.  Applications for grades Kindergarten through 6^th grade will be distributed at Open House on August 15 or the first day of school.  For Grades 7-12, the applications will be distributed at registration.   This year included with the meal application will be a "Request for Information" form.  The form needs to be completed and returned to school by families.  Missouri Senate Bill 583 requires public LEAs to provide this form indicating “yes” or “no” whether each child in the family has health care insurance.  Food service will be collecting the information for compliance with SB 583.

The Salem Tiger Football Teams and the 12^th Tiger Club would like to invite the public to a scrimmage this Friday at 6:00 at the Salem High School Football Field. Admission to the game will be bottles of Gatorade or water. These will be given to the players after the away games.

The St. Louis Cardinals were off yesterday and start a three game series with Milwaukee tonight at 6:40 on KSMO Radio.

Casey Kotchman led off the bottom of the ninth with a homer, lifting the Tampa Bay Rays over the Kansas City Royals, 2-1, in the opener of a four-game series. Eric Hosmer drove in the lone run for the Royals, who have lost three of four. Kansas City starter Luke Hochevar allowed one run on five hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked two. Blake Wood (5-1) took the loss for Kansas City who will play the Rays again tonight.

Funeral services for David Olen Gibson Sr. of Viburnum, age 51, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Viburnum. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Czar Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.

Graveside services for Donna Faye Levin of Salem, age 54, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Hew Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Robert F. Eaves of Overland Mo., age 87, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 9:00. Interment will in the Enke Cemetery in Lenox with Full Military Honors.
