Kip Wells pitched seven strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals knocked off the San Diego Padres, 2-1, in the third of a four-game set at Busch Stadium. Wells (5-13) gave up just one unearned run on six hits and struck out four for the Cardinals, who have won two of their last three games. Juan Encarnacion and Albert Pujols each drove in a run. Greg Maddux (7-9) pitched a good game as he gave up just two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work, but still got the loss for the Padres, who had won five of six coming into the game. Ryan Franklin retired three straight batters in the eighth after Randy Flores gave up a leadoff single while Jason Isringhausen worked around a pair of walks in the ninth to pick up his 22 save of the season. The Cards are back to within six games of Central Division leading Milwaukee Brewers. The Cards and Padres wrap up their series tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.
