The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that he had one man working on the tires on truck #115, one man rotating the tires on truck #119 and a couple of men repairing the hopper on the Dura Patcher. Purcell went on to say that he had crews replacing county road signs and repairing chip and seal at various locations.  District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that materials were being added to Dent County Roads 3165 and 3300. He added that he had a man doing tire work on truck #114 and a crew hauling in old crossover pipes that had been replaced. Larson went on to say that he also had a crew checking for downed signs. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles had nothing to report. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that she had balanced with Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams on all banking accounts for the month of July. Curley added that she was very pleased with the 30.25% voter turnout in Tuesday’s election. The Commissioners reviewed and approved bills. Fuel bids were taken by phone and Phil-Mart was approved for diesel at $3.05 per gallon, while MFA was approved for the gasoline bid at $2.92 per gallon. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning in the Courthouse and it is open to the public

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of July. During the month, they wrote two equipment repair orders, 23 summons to appear in court, 27 warning tickets, and 33 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 19 accidents, one assault on a law enforcement officer, three burglaries, one child molestation, one child abuse, two resisting arrest, ten city warrants, one disorderly house, five reports of disorderly conduct, two reports of domestic assault, eight reports of domestic violence, two reports of driving while intoxicated, two reports of DWI/drug intoxication, two reports of driving while suspended, one report of forgery, one report of leaving the scene of an accident, and one report of a minor in possession of intoxicants. The department also investigated one report of a peace disturbance, one report of sexual assault, one for endangering the welfare of a child, on fraudulent use of a credit card, three fugitive warrants, one identity theft, 20 reports of stealing, two reports of property damage, one suicide attempt, and two 96-hour commitments. There was one reports of distributing/delivering/ manufacturing/ producing/possessing a controlled substance, one report of possession of amphetamine, one report of possession of benzodazephine, one report of possession of heroin, two reports of possession of marijuana, two reports of possession of opium, three reports of possession of drug paraphernalia, and a report of selling heroin. The Salem Police Department received calls for five peace disturbances, seven alarms sounding, four fights in progress, ten ambulance assists, two drag racing reports, two fire calls, twelve escorts, four reports of intoxicated driver, one prowler, two suspicious person/vehicle, two intoxicated pedestrian, 17 domestic disputes, nine wreckers, and three 911 calls. The police department received 1,845 calls for service during the month, handled 125 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 69 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 10 hours in court testifying and five hours as court bailiff. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 9,530 miles and arrested 20 males and 17 females during the month of July.

An accident occurred at 10:30 Thursday morning in Phelps County that took the life of an Arizona man. According to the highway patrol report, 67-year old Zafir Matovski of Phoenix, Arizona was driving a 2014 Freightliner east on Interstate-44 in Rolla when he ran off the right side of the road and struck a rock bluff. Matovski was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center and then pronounced dead by Phelps County Deputy Coroner Lenox Jones at 11:16. An occupant in the vehicle, 62-year old Dimitar Dimitrov of Van Nuys, California, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. 

An accident occurred at 1:45 Thursday afternoon in Iron County on Highway 49 about a mile and half south of Viburnum. According to the highway patrol report, 37-year old Brenda Wilkinson of Viburnum was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox north when she lost control while attempting to negotiate a curve, skidded off the right side of the road, and struck an unoccupied 1999 Ford Explorer, which had been involved in a previous non injury crash. Wilkinson suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital.

Registration for all middle school and high school students will be held this week. Today, August 8th, freshman and anyone who has failed to register may come in and register. Students will need to register at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1201 West Rolla Road, from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. There will be no registration held at the Highs School or the Middle School.

The Salem Football Tigers will be participating in a scrimmage on Blue/White night on Monday, August 11th at 6:00 pm. Come on out to the Salem High School Football Stadium and support your 2014 Salem Tigers. Admission to the game will be a Gatorade and water. At 5:30 before the scrimmage, Coach Mac will be having a parent meeting with all parents of 9th to 12th grade players. The 12th Tiger Booster Club will be meeting at that time as well.

Kolten Wong smacked a pair of solo homers among his three hits as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Boston Red Sox, 5-2. The Cardinals will be in Baltimore tonight to start a three-game series with the Orioles. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 5:30.

Jeremy Guthrie tossed a complete game and Alex Gordon hit a two-run home run, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-2. The Royals start a three-game series with the Giants tonight. 

De'Anthony Thomas had an 80-yard punt return for a touchdown as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, 41-39, in the preseason opener for both teams on Thursday.

The St. Louis Rams will open up their preseason schedule tonight when they host the New Orleans Saints at the Edward Jones Dome. Kickoff is set for 7:00.

Funeral services for James (Bob) Robert Chitwood of Salem, age 81, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Chitwood Cemetery in Ellington.

Funeral services for Winford L. Matchell of Glendale, Arizona, age 87, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Freeman Cemetery in Crawford County.

Funeral services for Sybilla Jane (Stagner) Buford, age 100, will be held Monday at noon at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Memorial Long Term Care.

Funeral services for Eileen Hughes of St. James, age 62, will be Monday at 1:00 at the St. James Chapel of James & Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will at the chapel from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.
