Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings reports that personnel with the Dent County Sheriff’s Office, State Highway Patrol and Conservation Department rescued a 93-year-old woman from her home on Dent County Road 2070 near Lake Spring. According to Stallings, the move was made at the request of her family as a safety precaution against the rising waters in the area that were getting close to her residence. The evacuation was made using a Department of Conservation boat to take her across Dent County Road 2070 which had flooded.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department reported a number of roads in Dent County were closed or impassable due to high water as of Wednesday afternoon. This list included the entire Montauk area and the campground at Montauk State Park as well as Route K between Highway 19 south and CR 6175, Route H about three miles west of Highway 72 and also about ten miles west of Highway 72, Dent County Road 3220 (also known as the Golf Course Road) at the low water bridge, Dent County Road 6660 to Route VV, Dent County Road 4110 at county road 4180 near Shawnee Mac, Iron Mountain Road between the Salem city limits & Highway 32 East, Dent County Road 3180 about 1.5 miles to the low-water bridge, Dent County Road 2070  between Route C & Highway 72 and Dent County Road 4170 at Highway 32 East. Sheriff Rick Stallings said this list is non-inclusive and there may be other locations that are either flooded or have the potential to flood.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has indicated that flooding closed Interstate 44 at mile marker 172 near the city of Jerome early Wednesday morning. It remains impassable in the westbound lanes. The eastbound lanes in that area are now open according to MoDOT. In addition, Highway 63 is now closed in two locations: south of Vienna in Maries County and at Westphalia in Osage County which has further complicating detour routes. Motorists are encouraged to use U.S. 60, I-70 or U.S. 36 as alternate routes. This is especially important for commercial motor vehicle traffic approaching Missouri from other states. Drivers traveling on Highway 63 to destinations north of Vienna should take Highway 63 to Highway 28 to Highway 50. Those traveling to areas north of Vienna should use Routes U and E to get around the closure. Commercial drivers are advised to avoid Route AW in Texas County. Though the route appears on GPS maps, it is closed to commercial traffic. The highway serves the Ft. Leonard Wood Army Base. Military Police will bar entrance to any CMV that attempts to use this route. The National Weather Service predictions indicate water will overtake the lanes of Highway 50 at Mount Sterling by mid-morning today, making travel in the area even more difficult. When the water recedes, MoDOT will inspect pavement and bridges for safety before opening highways for public use.

Mark Twain National Forest has temporarily closed campgrounds in south-central Missouri due to Tuesday’s flash flooding. Campgrounds currently temporarily closed include: Lane Spring Recreation Area off Highway 63 south in Phelps County; Paddy Creek Wilderness Campground in Texas County and Mill Creek at Newburg in Phelps County. According to the National Weather Service, Springfield, between 10-14 inches of rain fell between August 2nd and August 7th in south central Missouri. More rain and moderate to major flooding is in the forecast through the weekend. The Gasconade River at Jerome was below 32 feet and expected to continue to rise. Flood stage for the Gasconade River is 15 feet. The Big Piney River at Fort Leonard Wood was at 21 feet, 8 feet above flood stage and should begin to recede. The Current River was expected to crest around late Wednesday night. Forest visitors are advised not to drive across flooded roads and bridges. Low water bridges throughout the forest may be flooded and inaccessible. Please follow detours that may also be set up to keep travelers from flooded areas.  If visitors have plans to camp near rivers or streams, even if the area has not had rain, please take extra precautions because there may be incoming, and residual flooding.  No boating or floating is recommended on rapidly rising rivers, or those rivers in flood stage.

An accident occurred at 9:00 Wednesday evening in Reynolds County on Highway 72 about seven miles west of Centerville. According to the highway patrol report, 53-year old Pansy Caldwell of Bunker was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt westbound when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Caldwell suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and removed from the scene by Hills Towing of Ellington.
