The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning.  For the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that due to the continuing dry weather, grading is very limited. Simpson did say that materials would be hauled to Dent County Road 624 in the Gladden area and a crew would be hauling rock to Bunker for the repaving of a road that is half in Dent County and half in Reynolds County.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that crews would be cutting brush on Dent County Roads 443 and 534, installing a drive way pipe on Dent County Road 252 and hauling gravel to Dent County Road 210. Tune also said that a crew continues working on a low water bridge in the Boss area.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending a series of meetings Thursday in St. James at MRPC starting at 4:00. At the meeting a number of citizens attended to express their thoughts about the Prosecuting Attorney’s office. Many citizens thought that the job of the Prosecuting Attorney should be made into a full time position instead of part time and should have a full time staff. The Commission explained that before the position can be made into full time it must be put on a ballot and voted on by the people. Commissioner Simpson said that the office of the Prosecuting Attorney now has two full time employees and one part time employee. Commissioner Tune said that at the beginning of each year the counties budget is set and the office of the Prosecuting Attorney is allotted as much money possible to pay for an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney and clerical help, but since Dent County is a third class county, not as much money is available to pay for a complete staff that first or second class counties have. Bennie and JoAnne Maxwell also attended the meeting to present to the Commission a letter requesting the investigation of procedures used during the investigation into the murder of William Neil Maxwell and the conduct of the public employees, elected officials and ambulance staff before and after the murder. The Commission also met with Susan Cunningham a representative from Spatial Data to discuss rural addressing. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Jake Peavy combined with three other pitchers in a five-hit shutout as the San Diego Padres downed the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-0, in the second of a four-game set at Busch Stadium. Peavy (12-5) gave up just three hits with two walks and five strikeouts in six innings of work for the Padres, who have won five of their last six games. Anthony Reyes (1-11) pitched well but still got the loss as he gave up just one run on seven hits in seven innings of work. Jim Edmonds went 3-for-4 in the loss. The Cards and Padres play again tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Mike Maroth was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow tendinitis on Monday. The move is retroactive to August 5. Maroth has lost his last four decisions, and has been charged with 26 earned runs and 36 hits over 11 1/3 innings in his last four appearances. To fill the roster spot, the Cardinals activated pitcher Tyler Johnson from the disabled list in time for the club's tilt with San Diego. Johnson was 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA in 37 games this season before heading to the DL on June 19 with a left bicep injury.

Brian Bannister pitched seven strong frames as Kansas City downed Minnesota, 5-1, to open a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Bannister (8-6) followed Cleveland's lead by twirling a gem and lowering his earned run average in 2007 to 3.32. The right-hander scattered six hits with one walk, resulting in one run with one strikeout. Mark Teahen had four hits and five different Royals drove in runs, helping snap the club's three-game skid. The Royals lead the season series 5-4. The Royals and Twins play again tonight.

With one swing of the bat, Barry Bonds became Major League Baseball's home run champion, bringing the controversy of his accomplishment to a boiling point. The San Francisco slugger broke one of the most sought-after records in major sports annals, hitting his 756th career homer, breaking the long-time mark held by Hank Aaron, as the Giants lost 8-6 to the Washington Nationals. With nobody on base, Bonds crushed a 3-2 offering from Mike Bacsik an estimated 435 feet over the wall in right-center field with one out in the fifth inning, giving the Giants a 5-4 lead. Neither Commissioner Bud Selig nor Aaron were on hand to witness the milestone.
