The Salem Ranger District is requesting your comments on the Proposed West Black River Bottomland Restoration project. This project is located on 30 acres of National Forest system land on the West Fork of the Black River in Reynolds County. This project is being proposed to: work towards the restoration of the hydrology of the West Fork Black River bottomland area, to restore spring within the area to a natural flow. Restoring the hydrology of this area will help to increase the diversity of plants, insects, birds and mammals. Actions include placing large wood debris in the pond to increase values for pond habitat and re-route the waters flow in the ditch to flow down the hillside in a sheet-like pattern, and also to collect and save desirable plants for later placement later. In the past, springs were dammed and ditched to dry out the area to make it suitable for farming. Restoring a more natural flow of these springs will help support bottomland hardwoods, wetlands, and meadows. These wetlands would provide habitat for several species of plants. The District Ranger of the Salem Ranger District is the responsible party for selecting an alternative for the project. Individuals and organizations desiring to comment need to send their name, and current physical mailing address, title of the project, “West Fork Black River Bottomland Restoration Project” along with their comments on the proposed action and supporting reasons for consideration to Thomas Haines, District Ranger, Salem Ranger District, 1301 South Main Street, Salem, MO 65560.
