The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers Monday night. Darin Brents was scheduled to appear to discuss the water disconnect ordinance about having to pay a reconnect fee after you are on the disconnect list, but did not attend the meeting. Willis Stagner was scheduled to speak about removing and replacing a fence around a cemetery that is owned by the county within the city limits on Lough Lane but also did not attend. Mayor Brown said the city would work with county on this and there would be no problem for those who need to access the cemetery to go through city property. Steve Atchley was also scheduled to appear to discuss a city policy about having departmental personnel knock on doors when turning off or on utilities, but he was not in attendance. Derick Monday was in attendance to discuss dangerous risks dealing with reptiles and how remote those risks are as well as voice his opposition to the new ordinance concerning dangerous reptiles. Brandt Ehrhardt then spoke that it should be the right of the citizens to have snakes as long as there was no history of problems with them. Elmer Leach also spoke about the snakes and how he hoped that the city would work with the residents to reach a better solution than a vague ordinance. The board approved the purchase of three 250 KVA Single Phase Pole Mount Transformers for the renovations at the high school for $3,500 each from Solomon Corporation for $10,500, approved the purchase of a 250 KVA Single Phase Pad Mount Transformer for $6,700 from Solomon Corporation for the new DCAI housing project, and they approved the purchase of 2,500 ft of underground primary wire from Fletcher-Reinhardt for $6,850. All the purchases will be reimbursed to the city. City Administrator Clayton Lucas said the city now has two building inspectors, Flag Football will start once school gets started, the pool will close next Tuesday before school starts, and the Truman Trailer Court did not meet their deadline of August 1st to have the work completed, but they have made progress and requested an additional 30 days to complete the work. The board approved the 30-day extension. Mayor Gary Brown wanted to remind people to have identifying address numbers on their house. He also said that city workers have been picking up limbs, but have been knocking on doors to ask residents to bundle up the twigs in four-foot lengths. He also said that a special electronic recycling collection and tire collection would be held in Salem on October 19th. As before, TV’s and monitors will cost $5.00 each, while passenger tires will cost $1.50 each, truck tires for $5.00 and $10.00 for tractor tires. The board approved to sign a quit-claim deed for the release of a city easement on property owned by Charles and Cindy Maledy, and approved to pay the annual maintenance contract of $8,115.96 to Tyler Technologies, Inc. for the utility billing software. The board approved closing the culvert and cleaning up an area on South Henderson, and Alderman Haydn Powell requested a quote on what it would cost to make South Henderson at that location a through road. The board then went into closed session.

The Industrial Development Authority of the County of Dent will conduct a meeting tonight at 6:00 in the evening. President Dodd is calling the meeting in lieu of the July 10th regular date, and it will be held at the Bank of Salem at Fourth and Main Streets. After approval of the agenda items and minutes from prior meetings, the board will review financial statements for the period ending July 31st. The board will then approve the payment of bills and discuss the status of the lease. The board may then discuss other business that comes before them and then make a motion to adjourn. The meeting of the Industrial Development Authority of the County of Dent is open to the public.

On August 12, 2013, from 7:00-8:00 pm, the University of Missouri Extension in Dent County will be offering a “Fall gardening” class, held at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory at 1200 W. Rolla Rd in Salem. The “Fall Gardening” course is designed to teach beginning gardeners the basics of extending the vegetable gardening season well into the fall and teach students about best management practices for improving their garden site in preparation for the following growing season. Patrick Greenwald, the Horticulture Specialist from the Phelps County Extension, will teach the course.  The fee for the course is $6.00. Due to limited space and to ensure adequate program materials, participants are asked to pre-register and pay by August 8th, 2013. Carlos Beltran and pinch-hitter Matt Adams homered in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Dodgers, 5-1. St. Louis starter Joe Kelly (3-3) surrendered one run on six hits in 5 1/3 innings in his sixth start of the season. The right-hander's scoreless streak that spanned across four starts came to an end at 20 innings in the sixth courtesy of an Adrian Gonzalez RBI single. The Cardinals and Dodgers play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting at 6:40.

Brian Dozier went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI to lead the Minnesota Twins over the Kansas City Royals, 7-0, in the second game of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Kansas City starter James Shields (6-8) was tagged for seven runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Eric Hosmer ended 2-for-3 for the Kansas City, which lost for just the second time in 14 games. The Royals and Twins will play again tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Martha Lucille Faulkner of Belleview, age 69, will be held today afternoon at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Boss Cemetery.

Funeral services for Ruth Hobson of Licking, age 86, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery.

Funeral services for Genevieve Angeline Scott of Steelville, age 87, will be held Thursday at noon at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 that morning until service time. Interment will be in the Hibler Cemetery in Steelville.

Funeral services for Roseann Eaton of Cherryville, age 89, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8;00 Wednesday. Interment will be in the Davisville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Maxine Capps of Salem, age 82, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Saturday night from 5:00 until 8:00. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Relay For Life.
