The Dent County 4-H and FFA Livestock Auction held Saturday at the Oakwood Mule farm generated $124,087.50 in sales with 38 different buyers. That number breaks down to $6,984.75 on the sale of seven lambs, $52,681.75 on the sale of 54 hogs and $58,199.00 on the sale of 19 steers. Two ribbons were also sold for $575. Leading purchasers of animals at the auction this year were the Oakwood Mule Farm as they bought two steers and eight hogs, Phil-Mart bought two steers, five hogs and a lamb; the Bank of Salem purchased three steers, three hogs and a lamb; Intercounty Electric bought one steer, two hogs and a lamb; Salem Livestock purchased two steers, a hog and a lamb; Progressive Ozark Bank purchased three steers and a hog; Interstate Regional Stockyards bought two hogs and a lamb; Town and Country Bank purchased one steer and two hogs; Moser Pharmacy bought two hogs and a lamb, and Phelps County Regional Medical Center purchased one steer and two hogs. At the conclusion of the regular sale, three youngsters donated their animals back to be auctioned off to benefit Sara Anderson who has been battling cancer, and the total amount raised was over $16,000. The Dent County 4-H and FFA members wanted to thank everyone who made this year’s event a tremendous success.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. City Administrator Clayton Lucas discussed the painting of the clarifiers at the wastewater treatment facility. The city received one bid from Smith and Edwards Construction from Mountain Grove to sandblast and paint the clarifiers for $24,000 each. The city could also replace the clarifier with stainless steel for an additional $14,500 each and not have to paint it for 30-40 years. The board wanted to find out how much it would cost if the city employees sandblasted and painted the clarifier and Lucas will have that figure at the next meeting. The board accepted the bid from Jim Crocker of $315.85 for the cutting, bailing and the removal of hay on the city property between Highway 19 and Route HH. The board also approved the bid from Highway K Farm in Licking of $9,265 for the sale of the 1993 Cat 70-foot bucket truck by a 3-1 vote with the funds going into the electric reserve. The city approved the bid from Solomon Corporation to purchase three 167 KVA transformers for $2,570 each, and also to purchase one 300 KVA transformer for $5,780. These are reconditioned units and have a two-year warranty. In unfinished business, the discussion on the old Middle School bids was postponed, as City Administrator Clayton Lucas had not yet received the appraisal on the property as well as on the Highway 19 South property. Alderman Kenneth Nash then read a statement dealing with the transfer of $200,000 out of the electric reserve account to general revenue to pay bills because of a clerical error in not posting the electronic payment of some $380,000 to Show-Me Power that comes directly out of the city general revenue account. This occurred in June during the budget preparations. The error was not reported in the open meeting in late July and Nash felt that it appeared that the city was trying to hide something. Alderman Haydn Powell had City Clerk Mary Happel read the e-mail that she sent to the alderman explaining how the error happened. The error was discovered when she was reconciling the bills in July. Mayor Gary Brown reported that there would be a workshop on August 30th at MRPC conducted by the Missouri Municipal League. He stated that another electronic recycling would be held on October 20th in Salem at 3rd and Grand Streets. There will be a $5.00 charge for TV’s and monitors, and no charge for other electronics. The board approved the budget amendments prepared by City Clerk Mary Happel in Ordinance #3261. City Administrator Lucas discussed with the board about an e-bill proposal to pay utility bills online. He said that startup costs are $399 with an annual security fee of $89. If the city wants the customer to see the bill, there is an additional $59.95 per year, and without being able to see the statement, it is $12.95 per year. There is also a 50-cent transaction fee. The board wants to look into the matter further before making any decision. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.
