An accident happened at 11:30 Wednesday morning in Phelps County on Route O about nine miles south of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 49-year old Julie Vincent of Lecoma, ran off the right side of the roadway, then came back on the roadway, skidded back off the right side and overturned. Vincent suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla by the Phelps County Ambulance. Vincent was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The vehicle sustained extensive damage and was towed by Ron Dishmans Towing.

There were nine community volunteers from the region complete CERT training in the St. James/Bourbon emergency situations that participated during a 20-hour training in St. James. Completing the class were Paula Schenck of Salem, Mike Gosnell and Katherine Mattison of Rolla; and Tracy Vilardo, Marlene Johnson, Amber Branch, Randle Wilhite, Andy Sutton and Gary Kassebaum, all of Edgar Springs. Terry Bruno served as instructor for the class, held at the MRPC offices at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James. The training introduced participants to the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) concept of preparing civilians to proactively organize and train for a disaster. CERT trainings cover disaster fire suppression, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, disaster psychology and team organization. The class was sponsored by the Meramec Regional Planning Commission and the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee through its grant program. Additional CERT trainings are planned, and for any persons interested in learning more about the training opportunities, they can contact Amy McMillen at the MRPC at 573-265-2993.

A FREE Homeownership Workshop is planned for Tuesday, August 12th in St. James from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Meramec Regional Planning Commission located at #4 Industrial Drive. The free homeownership workshop is presented by the MRPC, in cooperation with the Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation and the Phelps County PHA Family Self-Sufficiency Program. Chuck Cantrell of Meramec Regional Planning Commission will cover the first meeting with a Realtor to closing on the purchase. The class is offered at no cost, on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration is requested. Persons interested in purchasing their own home may benefit from the information. A benefit concert will be held this Saturday night from 7:00 to 9:30 to help raise funds for the rehab expenses for Jacob Brooks at the City Hall Auditorium. Iron Mountain Bluegrass, Ozark Alliance, Charlie Younger and Randy Parker; and Jim Pryor and Felicia Steinbarger will all perform. For more information, call 729-4647.

Albert Pujols was 4-for-4 with a grand slam, powering the St. Louis Cardinals to a 9-6 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the middle contest of a three-game set from Busch Stadium. Ryan Ludwick added three hits and two RBI, including a home run for St. Louis. Joel Pineiro (4-5) tossed seven effective innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits to pick up just his second win in his last 15 starts. Chris Perez earned his first major league save with 1 2/3 scoreless frames after being recalled earlier in the day from Memphis. The Cardinals remain 5 1/2 games behind Chicago for the division lead. The Cards and Dodgers wrap up their series today at 1:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Cardinals made a rash of moves over the past two days as they optioned second baseman Brendan Ryan and outfielder Nick Stavinoha to Triple-A Memphis and recalled reliever Chris Perez Wednesday. St. Louis signed free-agent infielder Felipe Lopez Tuesday after he was released by the Washington Nationals, and announced that pitcher Matt Clement was given his unconditional release after clearing waivers. Clement’s arm never did come around after spring training.

Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-4 with a three- run homer and scored twice as the Boston Red Sox routed the Kansas City Royals, 8-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set. Luke Hochevar (6-10) was roughed up for five runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss for Kansas City. Ross Gload went 2-for-4 and drove in the only two runs for the Royals, who had won three straight and seven of eight before dropping the final two of this series. Billy Butler went 3-for-4 and scored for Kansas City who will have the day off today.

The St. Louis Blues Hockey Team Caravan will be coming back to Salem this Friday and will be at Country Mart. This year’s event will be inside the store and will begin at 11:00 and last until 1:00. Players Yan Stastny and Cam Janssen will be attendance along with Blues announcer Chris Kerber and former Blues player Bob Plager. There will be autographed items given away and ticket giveaways, and there will be time set aside for autographs. The event will begin with a short preview of the upcoming year followed by a short question and answer session. KSMO will be broadcasting live from the event.

Funeral services for Jimmy Carrol Schafer of Salem, age 67, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery.

Memorial services for Michael Holman of St. James, age 59, will be held today at 1:00 at the VFW Post 5608 in St. James. Visitation will be from noon until 1:00 today at the VFW Post. Interment will be at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Funeral services for Bob Shepherd of Licking, age 64, will be held today at 2:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Patterson Cemetery.

Graveside services for Violet Loretta McDonald of Licking, age 66, will be held Friday morning at 11;00 at the Jadwin Cemetery. No visitation is scheduled. Memorials may be made to the Jadwin Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Helen June Bell of Salem, age 81, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Eaton Cemetery in rural Crawford County. Memorials may be made to the Eaton Cemetery.

A Memorial Service and a Masonic Service will be held for James Marvin Lile of Salem, age 78, starting Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemetery in Edgar Springs Cemetery.

Graveside services for Richard McDonald of Foley, Alabama will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem with full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
