At the Dent County 4-H and FFA Expo Livestock Auction held this past Saturday, 37 buyers purchased 81 animals comprised of 46 hogs, 23 steers and 12 lambs, as well as seven cured hams and four ribbons with the total coming to $151,618.55. The leading purchasers at the auction included Phil-Mart who bought seven hogs, three steers, two cured hams and one lamb; the Bank of Salem who was the high bid on four steers, four hogs and a lamb; Salem Livestock who purchased four steers, two hogs and one lamb; Town and Country Bank who bought three hogs, two steers and a lamb; Intercounty Electric who purchased two lambs, two hogs, a steer and a ribbon; Moser Pharmacy who was the high bid on a steer, a lamb and a hog; Dent County Farm Bureau who bought a lamb, hog and steer; and Progressive Ozark Bank who bought two hogs and a steer. The totals for all categories showed that the cured hams sold for $2,136.00, the lambs brought $7,489.25, the hogs sold for $57,102.30, the steers brought $83,936.00 and the ribbons sold for $955. Brady Hagler sold a hog to help the Austin Reed family with expenses to help him fight his cancer and it was sold four times raising $15,180, and combined with other donations, a total of $16,900 was raised. This year, the Lough family donated $250 back to the 13 buyers who purchased from first time exhibitors and that totaled $3,250; South Central Regional Stockyards presented premiums to 19 exhibitors for $3,150 and Interstate Regional Stockyards provided premiums to eight exhibitors totaling $1,950. A big thank you goes out to all the bidders and buyers at the expo as well as all those who helped make the auction a huge success.
The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, Gary Strack with Shafer, Kline and Warren, Inc., an engineering firm, was in attendance to introduce the company to the commissioners and gave some background in their work with BRO funds in helping to build bridges. He asked some questions about the bridge for Dent County Road 3210 to make sure that he had the right bridge and that it was a 160-foot bridge project. A request for qualifications by interested firms is due this Wednesday at the clerk’s office by 4:30. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that repairs are being made to brush cutter #7 and that maintenance is being done on truck #121. He said that workers would be checking downed road signs and would be cleaning out culverts that are jammed up. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that repairs were being made on Dent County truck #68 and service is being performed on truck #65. He said that crews would be replacing signs reported missing on county road 2020 and crews will also be checking culverts. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended a CCAM board meeting last week in Joplin and they set up the tentative programming for the commissioners’ annual education meeting to be held February 12th through the 14th in Columbia. He reported that the board has reached a final settlement with the hotel in Jefferson City to move the meeting from there to Columbia. He stated that Senator Schafer, who created a bill to eliminate Solid Waste Management Districts across the state that failed this year in the legislature, wants to meet with the CCAM Board to discuss why he wants to do this and Skiles will be a part of the group he addresses. The board set the date for the tax rate hearing for August 19th at 10:00 to establish the tax rate for the Road and Bridge Tax, General Revenue Tax, SB 40 Tax and Senior Citizens Service Fund Tax. The commissioners also approved the sale of three sheriff’s vehicles to Schwartz Salvage who bid the highest. Schwartz bid $927.50 for a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, bid $1,327.50 for a 2003 Ford Explorer and $1,427.50 for a 2004 Ford Explorer. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday at 9:00 in the morning at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 4:05 Saturday afternoon in Crawford County on Sig Bass Road about twelve miles south of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, Kevin Conaway of House Springs was riding a 2005 Honda motorcycle west when the motorcycle hit a dog in the roadway and overturned. Conaway suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by Arch helicopter to the St. Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur. He was not wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Honda sustained minor damage and was later removed from the scene by a family member.
An accident occurred at 3:35 Monday afternoon in Shannon County on Highway 19 about four miles north of Winona. According to the highway patrol report, 32-year old Wesley Lee of Eminence was traveling southbound in a 2000 Jeep Cherokee when he struck the rear of a 2006 AMC H3 driven by 66-year old Judith Parcel of Winona, who was attempting to make a left hand turn. Parcel suffered minor injuries and was transported by a private vehicle. An occupant in the AMC, 69-year old Garnet Clark of Winona, suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Mercy Hospital in Mountain View. Everyone involved in the accident was wearing a seat restraint.

Andre Ethier, A.J. Ellis, and Zack Greinke all brought home a run, as the Los Angeles Dodgers extended their franchise- record road winning streak to 15 games with a 3-2 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright (13-7) absorbed the loss. The National League leader in innings pitched (175 2/3) lasted seven innings and gave up three runs on seven hits while striking out five batters for the Cardinals, who have dropped nine of their last 12 games. The Cardinals and Dodgers will play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting at 6:40.
Jeremy Guthrie tossed his second career shutout as the Kansas City Royals dismantled the Minnesota Twins, 13-0, in the opener of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Guthrie (12-7) scattered four hits and a walk while striking out seven to reach the 12-win plateau for the first time in his career. Eric Hosmer went 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBI, while Billy Butler and Alcides Escobar finished with two RBI apiece for the Royals, who play the Twins again tonight.

Funeral services for Martha Lucille Faulkner of Belleview, age 69, will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Boss Cemetery.
Funeral services for Ruth Hobson of Licking, age 86, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Fox Funeral Home Chapel in Licking. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery.
Funeral services for Genevieve Angeline Scott of Steelville, age 87, will be held Thursday at noon at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 10:00 that morning until service time. Interment will be in the Hibler Cemetery in Steelville.
