Sixty-six head of hogs, 18 head of sheep and 29 head of cattle were exhibited at Friday’s 4-H and FFA Expo held at Oakwood Mule Farm. Chip Kemp, University of Missouri Animal Science Instructor and Judging Team Coach, put the official placing on the 103 head of high quality animals. In the breeding swine show Bret Freeman exhibited the Champion Breeding Gilt, while Shelby Martin Exhibited the Reserve Champion. The 54 market hogs were divided into 7 classes. Class 1 was won by Cody Harrison’s 240-pound hog, Class 2 by Sierra Hagler’s 257-pounder, Class 3 by Rusty Wells’ 266 lb. pig, Class 4 by Brady Strader’s 273-pounder, Class 5 by Bailey Martin’s 288-pound market hog, Class 6 by Kaden Garrison’s 299-pound hog and Class 7 by Preston Baker’s 316-pound pig. Bailey Martin exhibited the Champion Market Hog and the Reserve Champion went to Connor Quick. In showmanship competition Brady Hagler won the Senior Division, while Brady Strader won the Junior Division. In the sheep show Shaylee Harrison’s Crossbred Ewe Lamb was the class winner, while Brooke Shults exhibited the winning Suffolk Ewe one year old or older and Suffolk Ewe Lamb. Brooke Shults’ Ewe Lamb took Champion Suffolk Ewe and Shaylee Harrison’s Crossbred Ewe won Supreme Champion Ewe. The twelve market lambs were divided into 3 classes. Class 1 winner was Erica Rushing’s 105-pound lamb, Class 2 winner was Londyn Cook’s 108-pound lamb, and Brooke Shults 121 pound lamb won Class 3. Londyn Cook took Champion Market Lamb and Erica Rushing won Reserve Champion. The Senior Showmanship Award went to Tyler Wofford and Brooke Shults won the Junior Showmanship. The Small Animal Show was also held in the arena with Evan Howard exhibiting the first place doe rabbit, Dalton Smith the class winning Layer Breed Cock, Katrina Morris the winning Layer Breed Cockerel, Makaela Lloyd first place Layer Breed Pullet and Dalton Smith the winning Bantam Pullet. In the Breeding Cattle Show Dalton Smith exhibited the Blue Ribbon Holstein Sr. Yearling Heifer and the Angus Senior Heifer. In the AOB (All Other Breeds) division Dalton Smith showed the class winning and Champion AOB Wagu Heifer. Dalton’s Wagu heifer was the Supreme Champion 4-H/FFA Heifer. In the Commercial Heifer show Dalton Smith showed the July-December 2011 class winner, which was also the Champion Commercial Heifer. Makaela Lloyd showed the January-March 2011 class winner, which was selected as Reserve Champion Commercial Heifer. Peewee Showmanship Awards were presented to Clayton Headrick and Irvin Johnson. Kayden Manthey was presented the 4-H Bucket Calf Award. The nineteen steers were divided into 5 classes. Class 1 was won by Brady Hagler’s 1035-pound steer, Class 2 by Hannah Headrick’s 1170-pound steer, Class 3 by Cody Bell’s 1240-pound steer, Class 4 by Jacob Anderson’s 1305-pound steer and Class 5 by Landon MacDonald’s 1430-pounder. Champion Market Steer went to Landon MacDonald and Cody Bell won Reserve Champion. Tyler Wofford was selected as Senior Showmanship Winner and Dalton Smith won the Junior Showmanship Award. Average Daily Gain (ADG) Winners were Olivia Elliott’s Market Lamb, A. J. Morrison’s Market Hog and Landon MacDonald’s Market Steer. The Overall Grand Champion market animal combines the live show placing, average daily gain and carcass ultrasound results. The Overall Grand Champions were Londyn Cook’s Lamb, Connor Quick’s Hog and Landon MacDonald’s Steer. Overall Reserve Champions were Taylor Bell’s steer, Bailey Martin’s Hog and Brooke Shults’ Lamb. Champion Carcass went to Sierra Hagler’s Steer, Brady Hagler’s Hog and Shaylee Harrison’s Lamb. C.J. Fleetwood’s Steer, Sierra Hagler’s Hog and Brooke Shults’ Lamb won reserve Champion Carcass. Reserve Champion ADG went to Taylor Bell’s Steer, Brooke Shults’ Lamb and there was a tie between Brooke Adams and Haylee Black’s Hogs. Dairy Showmanship went to Dalton Smith, while Senior Project Record Book Award went to Bret Freeman and Alison Earl won the Junior Award. The Herdsman Awards went to Brady Hagler for Beef, Justin Case for Swine and Alison Earl for Sheep. Brownfield Network Leadership Award Buckles were presented to Senior 4-H member Mackenzie Wulff and Senior FFA member Tyler Wofford.
The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 7:00. After approval of the agenda bids will be reviewed. In unfinished business, the Board will address the Old Middle School bids, due to not having a full Board at the last meeting. City Administrator Clayton Lucas and the Aldermen will discuss various items concerning the city. Mayor Gary Brown will then give his report on various issues. Then Bill #3261, an ordinance that is required to make the final adjustments to last year’s budget, will be presented. Clayton Lucas will then present a proposal to the Board about a program that will allow utility customers to be able to pay their utility bills online. The Board will then vote to go in to Closed Session to discuss litigation, real estate, personnel and contracts. The meeting is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 8:10 Saturday evening in Shannon County on Highway P about ten miles southeast of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, 20 year-old Dallas Lanham of Bunker attempted to operate his 2004 Honda TRF 250 motorcycle on one wheel and was ejected. Lanham suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial District hospital. The Honda sustained minor damages and was driven from the scene.
Enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year at the Salem Junior and Senior High Schools will be held today through Thursday, August 9th, 9:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon each day. All students must attend to receive their schedules and locker assignments. A parent or guardian must attend to complete district required enrollment forms. Today, registration will be held for new high school and junior high students. On Tuesday, registration will be held for new high school students as well as Seniors and seventh graders. On Wednesday, Juniors and eighth graders will be able to register. On Thursday, registration will be held for Sophomores and ninth graders. All 7th, 8th and 9th grade students will enroll in the library of the Junior High building and all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students will enroll in the library of the Senior High School building. Students must be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and hepatitis B (3 doses, grades 7-12) unless an exemption has been signed by a physician or parent and filed with the school. A TD booster is required 10 years after the last dose. All students must present proof of compliance with the immunization rule by the first day of school, but are encouraged to bring records on registration day. A new state law requires that all students entering 8th grade must have a TD booster before starting school. No one will start school if immunizations are not up to date. Students not entering 8th grade will still be able to follow the 10-year repeat booster. Open House will be on Tuesday, August 14th for the Salem High School and Junior High from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The first day of school is scheduled for Wednesday, August 15th.

Kyle Lohse spun six scoreless innings Sunday and the Cardinals blanked the Brewers, 3-0, to complete a three-game sweep at Busch Stadium. Lohse scattered four hits and walked three while striking out six. Daniel Descalso went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple and a run scored for the Cardinals. The Cardinals start a four-game series with the San Francisco Giants tonight at 6:40 on KSMO.
Eric Hosmer crossed the plate with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning on a throwing error and the Kansas City Royals edged the Texas Rangers, 7-6, in the finale of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Greg Holland earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief work for the Royals, who snapped a two-game skid. Jeff Francoeur ripped a solo home run and Brayan Pena added a two-run long ball in the victory. The Royals start a three-game series with the White Sox tonight.
The U.S. picked up a few medals Sunday at the track, including gold for Sanya Richards-Ross' run in the women’s 400 meters. The U.S. now has 28 gold medals and 60 total medals, one less than China for the lead.
The Salem Tiger Football and the 12th Tiger Club would like to invite the public to a scrimmage on Friday, August 10th at the Salem High School Football Stadium beginning at 6:45 pm. At 6:00 there will a Parent Meeting with Coach Schuchardt and then after the Parent Meeting there will be a 12th Tiger Booster Club Meeting. Admission to the game will be a water and Gatorades for the players. After each away game, the 12th Tiger Booster Club provides a sandwich, chips and water/Gatorade. Funeral services for Marjorie Sue Pickett of Salem, age 77, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until time of service. Graveside service will be Thursday at the Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock, Tennessee. Memorials may be made to the Riverways Pregnancy Center.
Funeral services for Floyd ‘Duke’ Sutterfield of Ellington, age 89, will be held Wednesday at 10:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Polk Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the scholarship fund for the Bunker High School.
