he Dent County Primary election was held Tuesday in Dent County as 3,107 people cast their vote which is 28.68% of the registered voters. One office was decided with the election and that was for the Dent County Sheriff’s race. Here are the unofficial results for contested races that affect Dent County:

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. At the meeting, Polly Mitchell explained that a man who becomes disoriented went for a walk about a week ago and became lost. She said she contacted the police who she said did not help her look for the person who was found about three hours after walking away from his home with heat exhaustion who was then hospitalized. She said she did not feel that city policies are enforced the same for everyone and feels they need to be flexible in certain circumstances. Laurie Walker returned to the board about the problems with the dog named Lacey and said that nothing has been done and the odors have gotten worse. She said that the city has a rabies vaccination ordinance but doesn’t enforce it, and she recommended to the board to register pets annually at a small fee to make sure that pets have had their rabies shots. The board approved the bid from Cary Stewart Construction, LLC out of West Plains for the connecting taxiway and aircraft parking apron at the Salem Airport for $479,146.20. The city will only be responsible for 5% of the bid amount with MoDOT paying the other 95%. The board approved the first phase of the compliance work required by DNR and the EPA through Archer Engineering for a total cost in this year’s budget of $45,586. This will include the mapping, hydraulic tests and flow monitoring for the first area around Route J and Franklin Street. The remaining mapping costs for other two areas will be $38,298.00. Jeff Meadows with Archer Engineering said that the city could do their own smoke testing, man hole inspections and camera work that would save about $40,000. He also said that he spoke with DNR about the compliance dates for this October and next August and said that with the submission of the CMOM plan in October for the city, the requirements for the plan in August would also be met. DNR agreed with his hypothesis so that would allow the city to move forward with their plan once accepted by DNR. Mayor Gary Brown went into great detail about the gas leak at the 4th Street Mall two Saturdays ago and how Ameren UE has agreed to reimburse the city for their labor in handling the situation which had people evacuated from their homes and a number of city streets closed off. He also discussed the transformers that leaked fluid at MFA on Tuesday, July 29th, the repair work done in getting the electric back on, the cleanup procedure and then finding out the a city employee came down with possible PCB poisoning on transformers that were supposed to be PCB free. Brown contacted the EPA and their instructions have been exaggerated in cleaning up the mess and they are satisfied with the job done by the city of Salem. City Clerk Mary Happel said that the final line item budget adjustments for the 2007-2008 fiscal year budget have been made, and that she will be making adjustments to the current fiscal year budget: the first in capital improvements for the change in the interest rate on the police cars, and the second came when the insurance rate per employee was billed at $471.29 per employee per month instead of the $488.59 that was quoted. She said the board would have to approve the adjustments by ordinance at some time. Happel also said that the auditors would be in Salem in about two weeks. The tax rate hearing was set for 6:45 on Monday, August 18th before the next meeting. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.

Ryan Ludwick smacked a one-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals a much- needed 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in a rain-soaked opener of a three-game series. Albert Pujols also smacked a two-run homer, while Adam Kennedy was 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jaime Garcia (1-1) was credited with the win for tossing a scoreless inning of relief for St. Louis, which had lost three of its previous four games. Two rain delays shortened Chris Carpenter's outing in his first home start since Opening Day 2007,as he allowed just three hits. The Cards and Dodgers play again tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio
Jason Bay finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored as Boston crushed Kansas City, 8-2, in the middle contest of a three-game set from Kauffman Stadium. Kansas City starter Brian Bannister (7-10) took the loss, charged with six hits and three runs in four-plus innings. Mark Teahen and Mitch Maier drove in the runs for the Royals, whose three-game win streak was halted. The Royals and Red Sox play again tonight.
The St. Louis Blues Hockey Team Caravan will be coming back to Salem this Friday and will be at Country Mart. This year’s event will be inside and will begin at 11:00 and last until 1:00. Players Yan Stastny and Cam Janssen will be attendance along Blues announcer Chris Kerber and former Blues player Bob Plager. KSMO will be broadcasting live from the event.

Funeral services for Sherrill E. Faust of St. James, age 64, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the Old Ridge Cemetery in rural Crawford County.
Funeral services for Jimmy Carrol Schafer of Salem, age 67, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery.
Memorial services for Michael Holman of St. James, age 59, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the VFW Post 5608 in St. James. Visitation will be from noon until 1:00 Thursday at the VFW Post. Interment will be at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.
Funeral services for Bob Shepherd of Licking, age 64, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Patterson Cemetery.
Graveside services for Violet Loretta McDonald of Licking, age 66, will be held Friday morning at 11;00 at the Jadwin Cemetery. No visitation is scheduled. Memorials may be made to the Jadwin Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.
Funeral services for Richard McDonald of Foley, Alabama are incomplete at this time, but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
Memorial services for James Marvin Lile of Salem, age 78, will be held on Saturday, August 9th at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemetery in Edgar Cemetery.
