Forty-nine market hogs and 17 commercial gilts made up the 4-H and FFA Expo hog show Friday morning at the Oakwood Mule Farm. In the market show there were six classes with the class winners being; Taylor Bell, Kennedy Major, Avery Raulston, Bailey Martin, Brady Hagler and Shelby Martin. Show judge Danny Omanis selected Brady Hagler’s 268-pound gilt as Champion and Shelby Martin’s barrow as Reserve Champion. Bailey Martin exhibited the January class winning gilt that was also selected as Champion. Bailey’s February class winner was selected as Reserve Champion. Bekah Kirker exhibited the March class winner.  In the showmanship competition 24 senior showman and 35 junior showmen competed. Judge Omanis selected Bailey Martin as Junior Showmanship winner, while Sierra Hagler won the Senior Showmanship award. The afternoon judging began with the sheep show at 1:30. Six ewe lambs, one ram lamb and two ewes one year old or older made up the breeding sheep competition. Tyler Wofford exhibited the Champion crossbred ewe lamb, Allison Earl had the Champion crossbred ewe one year old or older, and Brooke Shults’ Suffolk Ewe won the purebred one year old or older class. Tyler Wofford’s ewe was the Champion Crossbred Ewe Lamb and Brook Shults’ Crossbred Ewe Lamb was Reserve Champion. In the Market Lamb Show class winners were Cole Elliott, Erica Rushing and Tyler Wofford. Champion Market Lamb went to Tyler Wofford and Erica Rushing won Reserve Champion Market Lamb. In the Showmanship Competition Shaylee Harrison was selected as the Junior Sheep Showman and Tyler Wofford won the Senior Division. Lyndsey Parker exhibited the Champion Junior Commercial Goat Doeling 13-24 months of age.  The Small Animal Show was held at 3:00 with Katarina Morris exhibiting the Champion Layer Breed Cockerel and Ornamental Breed Pullet.  Becky Paul exhibited the Champion Ornamental Breed Cockerel. The Beef and Dairy show started at 4:00. Dalton Smith exhibited the Champion and Reserve Champion Holstein Heifers. In the Breeding Beef Cattle competition Dalton also exhibited the Champion and Reserved Champion AOB (All Other Breeds) Heifers. Landon McDonald won the Champion Commercial Heifer, while Reserve Champion went to Brooke Adams. Twenty-four entries made up the Market Steer Show. Class winners were Eddie Fleetwood, Lucas Blackwell, Tyler Wofford and Landon McDonald. Landon McDonald won Champion Steer and Tyler Wofford won Reserve Champion Steer. Texas Nall won Junior Beef Showmanship, while Tyler Wofford was selected as the Senior Beef Showman. Judge Danny Omanis, of the Dub Ranch, complimented everyone on the high quality of the livestock, the outstanding work put forth by the exhibitors and the excellent facilities at the 4-H and FFA Expo.

Registration for Salem R-80 Junior High and High School students begins this week in the Salem Senior High Library and Salem Junior High Library. Registration for new students, grade 7-12, will be held today from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. On Tuesday, registration will be held for seniors and seventh graders from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. This day will also include registration for new high school students, grades 10-12. Juniors and eighth graders will have the opportunity to register on Wednesday from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. On Thursday, sophomores and ninth graders will be able to register from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Thursday will also be designated for anybody who has yet to register by then.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. During the hearing of persons, Darin Brents wishes to discuss with the Board the City’s policy on disconnects, Willis Stagner is requesting to remove and replace the fence between the county cemetery on Lough Lane and the city property, and Steve Atchley wants the City to establish an ongoing and permanent policy that would require the Water Department personnel to knock on the customers door at the time the water is shut off or turned back on. Also during the hearing of persons, Derick Monday wants to talk to the Board in order to be able to keep his pet snakes; Brandt Ehrhradt and Elmer Leach wants to speak about being able to keep pet reptiles in the city. In bids, City Administrator Clayton Lucas will present bids for three 250 KVA single-phase pole mount transformers, and bids for 2,500 foot of underground primary wire. He will also update the Board on various issues and Mayor Gary Brown will update the Board on items concerning the City of Salem during his reports.  Resolution #10-2013, a resolution authorizing the Mayor to sign a quit-claim deed for the release of an easement on the property at 903 Thomas owned by Charles and Cindy Maledy will be presented. The Board voted on this at a previous meeting to relinquish the city’s easement. Lucas will then request approval to pay a bill from Tyler Technologies, Inc. for the annual maintenance contract of all the utility billing software for $8,115.96. In new and miscellaneous business, Aldermen Phillip Giacomelli wishes to discuss with the Board property on South Henderson. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel and litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

Lance Lynn tossed eight strong innings and the St. Louis Cardinals pounded Cincinnati pitching for 19 hits in a 15-2 throttling of the Reds that capped a three-game series. David Freese led the outburst by going 3-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBI and three runs scored, while Matt Adams and Tony Cruz also homered while finishing with two RBI and a pair of hits each. The Cardinals will start a four-game series with the L.A. Dodgers tonight at Busch Stadium. You can hear that game on KSMO starting at 5:30.

Lorenzo Cain knocked in two runs and Ervin Santana tossed six solid innings as the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Mets, 6-2, in the rubber match of a three-game series. Mike Moustakas hit a solo homer for the Royals, who went 8-1 on a nine-game road trip. Santana (8-6) allowed one run on five hits while striking out five and walking three. The Royals will start a series with the Minnesota Twins tonight at 7:10.

Graveside services and interment for Heath Barkley Hudson of Salem, age 46, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Services for Kayla Nicole Meade of Salem, age 21, will be held today at 1:00 at the New Harmony Church. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Mr. Hobert Trentham of Licking, age 83, will be held Tuesday at 10:00 at the St. John Catholic Church in Licking. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Graveside serice and interment for Lorene Davis of Steelville, age 78, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Turnbough Cemetery in Davisville. Visitation will be Tuesday night from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Martha Lucille Faulkner of Belleview, age 69, will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 at the Boss Assembly of God. Visitation will be Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Boss Cemetery.
