The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting Tuesday night. President Grant Hamlet asked that due to the fact that a board member was absent that Old Business be moved to the front of the agenda and the Board agreed. The board welcomed Mike Godi as a replacement for Stan McElfresh. Board member Liz Gruendel made a motion that Mike Godi finish the term of Board member McElfresh, a motion was seconded by Tom Roofe, and carried by all. During the calendar review it was noted that the 21st of August would be the board training classes at the District. Reimbursements for the month of June and July were presented and reviewed by Chief Nash. In new business, a discussion was held and a date of August 31st @ 6:00 at the fire station was set for the tax levy hearing. The board discussed the repair of the guttering and asked Chief Nash to go forward with the repairs and to check on warranty information. The board also directed Chief Nash to complete the painting of the district building. Discussion was held on prices to replace the basement doors. The board decided to table this until further information could be acquired. The board discussed the purchase of a new copier for the district. It was suggested by President Grant Hamlet to purchase a copier that would also act as a printer and a fax. The copier purchase was approved from Automated Business Systems. Chief Nash then reported to the Board that Tanker 84 was repaired and back in service, Engine 83 is due for scheduled maintenance and that will be completed this month, and Ladder 81 is still having problems and after the company spent time here.  It was decided that President Grant Hamlet and Chief Nash would talk to the owner of Rosenbauer to resolve the issues. Chief Nash also reported on the Interoperability Demonstration and discussed with the board the possibility of getting a Static IP for the department. The board then set the date for the next scheduled meeting for September 7th @ 6:00 PM at the Dent County Fire Protection District building. The meeting was then adjourned.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman meeting on Monday was postponed due to the illness of an Alderman, and has been rescheduled for tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers and will start at 7:00 pm. At the meeting, Alice Schwartz will talk to the Board concerning a problem with teenagers in the parking lot of Century 21 causing disturbances in the neighborhood. Bids will then be reviewed for the John Deere 313 Skid-Steer Loader, 2007 International Bucket Truck, interest rates for the lease/purchase of the bucket truck, and airplane fuel for resale from the Salem Municipal Airport. In unfinished business, Mayor Gary Brown, with the approval of the Board, will appoint an Alderman to fill the unexpired term of the late East Ward Alderman Jim Jackson. The Mayor will then give his Public Works report. City Clerk Mary Happel will present Bills No. 3204 and 3205 for approval. Bill No. 3204 is an ordinance for the annexation of property in Brandon Heights into the City of Salem. Bill No. 3205 is an ordinance authorizing the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and BWR for the providing of engineering services for the Salem Municipal Airport runway lighting project. Mary Happel will then request the Board call for a Public Tax Levy Hearing on August 16th. The Board will then go into closed session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways will host a “Canoe and Kayak Clinicevent at Round Spring today and Friday, August 6th. There will be a morning session beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m. each day. The afternoon sessions start at 12:30 p.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. Kayaks and canoes will be provided. The purpose of the clinic is to improve the safety, skill, and enjoyment of visitors using canoes and kayaks on the Riverways. Topics covered include canoe and kayak equipment; rescue techniques; basic paddle strokes and maneuvers; and river safety. Sessions are limited to 12 participants and advanced reservations are required.  Reservations can be made in person or by calling the Round Spring Visitor Center at 573-858-3297 ext. 25 and asking for Rangers Moria Painter or Dave Tobey. The Round Spring Visitor Center is open from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. daily. Round Spring is located 16 miles north of Eminence, Missouri, on State Highway 19. The event is free, and all are welcome. 

There will be a CBCO Blood Drive at the Salem Memorial District Hospital this Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. There is a need for type A positive, B positive and O positive. You must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health and present an ID.

Chris Carpenter worked 7 1/3 innings and Albert Pujols went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run to help the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-4 win over the Houston Astros in the finale of a three-game set. Carpenter (12-3) gave up two runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts and added an RBI at the plate for the Cardinals, who had dropped the first two games of the set while giving up 27 runs. Felipe Lopez scored twice and drove in a run in the win. St. Louis is off today and begins a three-game set in Florida on Friday.

Kevin Kouzmanoff delivered the tie-breaking two-run double and Brett Anderson worked seven strong innings to lead Oakland to a 4-3 win over Kansas City in the deciding contest of a three-game set. Sean O'Sullivan (1-2) took the loss after allowing all four runs -- three earned -- on six hits while walking two and fanning four over 5 1/3 innings for the Royals. The Royals have the day off today.

The St. Louis Cardinals learned Tuesday that rookie third baseman David Freese would miss the remainder of the season due to a tendon injury in his right ankle that will require surgery.

Freese was originally placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 29 with a bone bruise in his right ankle. While playing in a rehabilitation game at Double-A Springfield on Monday, he re-injured the ankle. It is believed to be a new injury in the same area as the one that landed him on the DL. In 70 games this year for the Cardinals, Freese hit .296 with four homers and 36 RBI.

The St. Louis Blues have acquired forward Graham Mink from the Florida Panthers in exchange for defenseman T.J. Fast.

Funeral services for John Torbit, Sr. of Salem, age 75, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel with a Rosary and Fourth Degree Services at 7:30. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honor. Memorials are suggested to the Knights of Columbus.

Funeral services for Stanley Seidl of Steelville, age 62, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Barnicle Chapel Cemetery in Steelville with Military Honors.

Funeral services for Glen M. Briggs of Stanton, age 93, will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 at the First Baptist Church of Stanton. Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the church. Interment will be at 3:00 at the New Hope Cemetery in Salem with full military honors. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home in Cuba.

Funeral services for Betty Ward of Steelville, age 80, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery in Steelville.
