A special election was held Tuesday for the Salem R-80 Bond Issue to finance improvements to the existing senior high, junior high and William Lynch Elementary School. A total of 874 votes were cast which is 20.72% of the registered voters that could vote in this election. The issue was voted down by the people with 461 “no” votes (53%) to 413 ”yes” votes (47%).

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving thefts, traffic stops, assault and an active warrant. On Tuesday, July 28th, a follow up investigation on the theft of two purses was conducted. The original thefts occurred on Friday, July 21st while the victims were shopping at Wal-Mart. The investigation led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem woman on the thefts. She was incarcerated on the thefts pending the issuance of a warrant. On Friday, July 31st at 5:00 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for an equipment violation that led to the arrest of a 35-year old Salem man on a misdemeanor warrant from Crawford Co. He posted bond on the warrant and was released to appear in court. At 6:20 p.m. that evening, an officer was detailed to the 100 block of South Warfel in reference to an assault. The report led to the arrest of a 52-year old Salem man. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Also on Friday, July 31st 8:20 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for an equipment violation that led to the arrest of a 22-year old woman from Imperial for possession of marijuana. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released on bond. On Saturday, August 1st at 11:30 a.m. an officer was contacted at station in reference the theft of a wallet. The report revealed the victim was shopping at Wal-Mart that morning, and during that time a black wallet containing $60 was stolen from her purse. At 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the Dent County Sheriff Department in reference to an active warrant. A Missouri State Highway Patrolman on a traffic violation had stopped a 20-year old Salem woman and she had an active warrant from the City of Salem. She was placed under arrest on the warrant, paid the fine and cost and was released. Anyone with information on the theft, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

An accident occurred at 3:15 Tuesday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 68 about a mile north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by 29 year-old Crystal Fisher of Rolla ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a road sign, and overturned in a ditch before coming to rest. Fisher suffered moderate injuries and was transported by Salem EMS to Salem Memorial Hospital. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Monte Carlo sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced her schedule for the annual 2009 Farm Tour, which will be today through Monday, August 10th. Emerson’s 2009 Farm Tour features stops at a sod farm, a buffalo ranch, a winery and a miniature horse ranch. The 2009 Emerson Farm Tour stop in our area will be on Thursday, August 6th at the MFA Agri-Services located at 209 East 8th Street in Rolla from 8:00 to 9:00 am.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Albert Pujols went 4-for-5 with a pair of homers, including a 10th-inning grand slam, as St. Louis scored eight runs over the final three innings to take a 12-7 victory from the New York Mets. The Mets held a 7-4 lead heading into the top of the eighth, but Pujols' first homer trimmed the Cardinals' deficit to two. St. Louis then rallied to tie the game in the ninth against Francisco Rodriguez, who suffered his fourth blown save of the season. After Kyle McClellan (3-2) pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth, St. Louis went ahead in the 10th with a one-out rally. Ankiel and Lugo hit consecutive singles, and Colby Rasmus walked to load the bases. After Skip Schumaker struck out, Mark DeRosa was hit with a pitch, forcing in a run. Pujols came up next and crushed a grand slam to left-center field. St. Louis starter Joel Pineiro surrendered a season-high seven runs on 11 hits over five innings in the game. The Cards and Mets play this morning at 11:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Ryan Ludwick was named the National League Player of the Month for July, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday. Ludwick was the second Cardinals player in as many months to take home the honor, as teammate Albert Pujols was named the top NL player in June. The right-handed hitting slugger finished July with a .340 batting average to go along with six home runs, 28 RBI and 18 runs scored over 27 games. He also accrued a .570 slugging percentage and a .396 on-base percentage.

Russell Branyan hit a go-ahead run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning and the Seattle Mariners held on to earn a 7-6 win over the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Yuniesky Betancourt doubled, tripled, drove in two and scored one for Kansas City, which has dropped six of its last seven. Luke Hochevar was tagged for seven hits, four runs, walked two and struck out eight over five innings of work. Jamey Wright (1-4) took the loss after giving up a run on two hits in an inning of relief. The Royals and Mariners play again tonight.

Kansas City Chiefs have signed wide receiver Amani Toomer and waived tight end Tony Curtis. They also claimed linebacker Vince Redd off waivers from New England and waived guard Edwin Harrison.

The Philadelphia Eagles have come to terms on a five-year contract with wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, their first-round draft pick. The 19th overall selection in this year's draft, Maclin scored 33 total touchdowns and piled up 5,609 all-purpose yards over his two-year collegiate career at Missouri. He had single-season school records with 102 catches and 1,260 receiving yards to go with 13 TD grabs last season.

There will be a Kids Trout Tournament Saturday from 7:00 AM until 2:00 at Montauk State Park. The tournament is limited to children 15 years of age and under with two age categories: one for those ages 11 and under, and the other for those 12 to 15 years of age. Registration will be at the Dorman L. Steelman Lodge.

Funeral mass for Clara Louise Keeler of Steelville, age 90, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the St. Michaels Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:45 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Eula I. Swiney of Bunker, age 79, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Ohlman Missionary Baptist Church in Bunker. Visitation will be held at the church from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Delmar Cemetery in Shannon County. Memorials may be made to the Ohlman Missionary Baptist Church or the Delmar Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

A Funeral Mass for Mary Louise O’Day of Harrah, Oklahoma, age 91, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Springfield. Visitation will be held Thursday from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Herman Lomeyer Funeral Home in Springfield with a Rosary Service at 3:00. Interment will be in the Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Paul Allen Light of Rolla, age 53, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Rhea Cemetery in rural Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Paul Light family.

Funeral services for Dennis J. Watkins, Sr. of Salem, age 66, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Carty Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Smile Train.

Funeral services for Flossie M. Zika of Edgar Springs, age 86, will be held Saturday at noon at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Edgar Springs. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Smith Cemetery in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Tri-County Center for Independent Living.
