Salem Police Chief Clifford Jadwin reports that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the break-ins at MFA Agri-Services Center, the MFA Greenspot and the 4^th Street Mall early Friday morning with money being taken from each location, and with a stolen pickup truck from Color World on Highway 32 west. Jadwin stated that 21-year old Everett Spencer Martin has been arrested and is in the Dent County Jail being held on a $10,000 bond after being charged with a Class C Felony for burglary, and tampering with a motor vehicle. Other charges may be filed after further investigation by the law enforcement agencies.

An accident happened on Highway 32 about five miles west of Salem at 5:40 Monday afternoon that left three persons with serious injuries. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Ford F-150 driven by 40-year old Tommy D. Matchell of Licking, ran off the right side of the roadway and overturned several times. Ejected from the pickup was 16-year old Kalyn Matchell who suffered serious injuries and was flown to St. Johns Hospital in St. Louis. Also suffering serious injuries was 58-year old Wayne Steffens of Salem who was flow to University Hospital in Columbia. The driver, Tommy Matchell suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital as was 11-year old Tristan Matchell who suffered moderate injuries. Tristan Mitchell was the only one wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. The pickup was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce announces that the final winner of the Yard of the Month Contest for the 2008 year has been awarded to David and Joyce Gray at #4 North Missouri Avenue in Salem. The Gray’s will receive a $50 Wal-Mart gift card. The chamber thanks all those who nominated a yard in the contest as well all those who participated.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning.  For the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that all chip and seal projects have been completed and crews are getting back to regular road work.  Simpson said that crews would be doing ditch work and replacing culverts on Dent County Roads 4245, 5170 and 6670 and a crew would be patching chip and seal on various roads throughout the district.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that the entire road crew would be assisting in the process of adding an additional layer of chip and seal to Dent County Roads 3010, 3210 and 3260.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending a Missouri Division of Tourism meeting this morning at the Salem TCRC starting at 10:00 regarding tourism promotion.  Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to encourage everyone to get out and vote today.  Curley said the polls will open at 6:00 am and close at 7:00 pm. The Commission also set the annual tax rate hearing for Monday, August 18^th at 10:00 am.  The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Today will be the Primary Election and the winner of the Democrats’ Sheriffs race between incumbent Bob Wofford and challenger Rick Stallings will determine who will be sheriff as there will not be a republican challenger in November. Another issue that will be determined is the ½ cent sales tax proposed by the city to fund park and recreation and also provide funds for storm water control. A simple majority is all that is needed for this issue to pass. Another election for the Dent County Commissioner for District 2 will determine who will represent this party. Democrat incumbent J.J. Tune is being challenged by Gary D. Howard and Greg Williams; while Gary Larson, Gary Polk and Ray Scheidemantel will vie to determine who will represent the Republican Party in November. Polls will be open today from 6:00 AM until 7:00 tonight.

The St. Louis Cardinals begin a three game home stand tonight against the LA Dodgers. You can hear the game tonight starting at 6:55 on KSMO Radio. The Cardinals are 5 ½ games out of first place in the Central Division.

Alex Gordon homered to help the Kansas City Royals defeat the Boston Red Sox, 4-3, in the first game of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Mark Teahen collected two hits an RBI and a run scored for the Royals, who won for the seventh time in eight games. Gil Meche (10-9) won his fourth straight start after yielding two runs on four hits and five walks in six innings. The red-hot righty, who also struck out nine, is 7-1 since June 10. Joakim Soria got into a jam in the ninth, but settled down to earn his 32nd save of the season. Coco Crisp led off with a base hit up the middle and two batters later advanced to second on a one-out hit by Pedroia. Both runners moved into scoring position as David Ortiz grounded out, and Kansas City decided to intentionally walk Kevin Youkilis to load the bases. Crisp raced home when Jason Bay reached on an infield single to make it 4-3, but Soria got Sean Casey to fly out to end the game. The Royals and Red Sox play again tonight at Kaufmann Stadium.

The St. Louis Blues Hockey Team Caravan will be coming back to Salem this Friday and will be at Country Mart. This year’s event will be inside and will begin at 11:00 and last until 1:00.
