The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 202 North Washington, at 7:00 p.m. In bids, City Administrator Ray Walden will present bids that the city received for the solid waste pickup and disposal services, purchase of a 2005-2008 used 1-ton or larger flatbed truck for the construction department, and purchase of street sweeper with possible broom attachment. After approval of the agenda and in unfinished business, City Attorney Camm Seay stated that he feels that he will be able to present the agreement between the city and Salem R-80 FFA for the use of the city’s shooting range at this meeting. City Administrator Walden and Mayor J.J. Tune will then give their reports. The board will then request, due to several conflicts, that the September 1st meeting be moved to September 8th and the September 15th meeting be moved fro September 22nd. Walden had requested RFQ’s for engineering services and was in the process of setting up formal review at the last meeting. Walden will make his recommendation. The Department Adjutant for the Military Order of the Purple Heart Department of Missouri is inviting the city to become a Purple Heart City. The board will then review and discuss the policy concerning the Salem Police Department assigned vehicles/take home policy. The board will then go into closed session to discuss personnel and contracts. The meeting of the Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released more of their reports. On Monday, July 28th at 4:00 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation revealed that a 33-year old Bunker female had stolen $55.70 worth of merchandise and left the store. Later that night at 10:58, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of East Third in reference to a domestic assault. That investigation revealed that a 28-year old Salem female had assaulted a 34-year old Salem male. She was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Tuesday, July 29th at 7:52 in the evening, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the detention of a 16-year old Salem male juvenile for stealing merchandise valued at $10. He was released to his father and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Officer. On Wednesday, July 30th at 1:08 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted in reference to a stolen bicycle. That investigation revealed that someone took a blue Schwinn 18 speed bicycle, valued at $120, from the yard of a residence in the 1300 block of South Mildred. Later that evening at 10:49, an officer was contacted in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took a fire pit, valued $100, from a residence in the 900 block of North Jackson. On Thursday, July 31st at 12:30 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 55-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced the roadwork that will place in our area this week. In Dent County, chip sealing the roadway surface to extend the pavement life will take place on Route DD between Route H and the end of state maintenance and also on Route YY between Route E and the end of state maintenance on Monday and then on Route OO between Route C and the end of state maintenance on Tuesday. Roadway maintenance will take place on Highway 19 between Route WW and Route KK in Shannon County on Wednesday. In Iron County, Highway 32 will be reduced to one lane as contractor crews seal coat the roadway. This section of roadway is located from Route KK to Highway 21. Work will take place today through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., including weekends if necessary. In Crawford County, roadway maintenance will take place Monday through Thursday on Highway 19 between Route P and Route PP, Route PP between Highway 19 and end of state maintenance, and Route WW between Frontage Road and end of state maintenance. Culvert pipe replacement will take place all week on Route Y between Route V and Highway 49, Route BB between Highway 8 and end of state maintenance, and Highway 8 between Highway 19 and Highway 68 in Phelps county. Bridge maintenance will take place Monday through Thursday on Route F between Route ZZ and Frontage Road. In Phelps County, bridge maintenance will take place Wednesday, August 6th through Sunday, August 10th on Highway 28 over Jones Creek Branch. Bridge replacement continues on Route D over Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad in Jerome. During these projects, one lane will be open and crews will flag traffic through the work area.

During the month of June 2014, troopers assigned to Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated four fatal traffic crashes. This is two more than June 2013. There were 149 accidents with 50 injuries and four fatalities for 2014 compared to 180 accidents with 85 injuries and two fatalities for 2013. The total number of fatalities investigated by Troop I Officers in 2014 is ten, the same compared to this time period last year. Reporting for June were Crawford County with 19 accidents and four injuries, Dent County reported 14 accidents with three injuries and Laclede County reported 39 accidents with 15 injuries and two fatalities. Also reporting for June were Maries County with seven accidents with three injuries, Phelps County reported 34 accidents with 12 injuries and two fatalities and Pulaski County reported 36 accidents with 13 injuries. Troop I also announced that they will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in Phelps County this month.

Registration for all middle school and high school students will be held next week. Starting on Monday, August 4 th, registration for any student entering grades sixth through twelfth that is new to the Salem R-80 School District will be held. This does not include rural school students. On Tuesday, August 5th, seniors and eight graders will be able to register as well as any new student that is new to the district. On Wednesday, August 6th, registration will be for juniors and seventh graders. On Thursday, August 7th, sophomores and sixth graders can register. Then on Friday, August 8th, freshman and anyone who has failed to register may come in and register. Students will need to register at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1201 West Rolla Road, from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.  There will be no registration held at the Highs School or the Middle School.

John Lackey emerged a winner in his St. Louis debut, thanks to a three-run seventh-inning rally that lifted the Cardinals to a 3-2 decision over the Milwaukee Brewers in a key NL Central clash. Matt Holliday began the comeback with a mammoth solo home run, with A.J. Pierzynski and Oscar Tavares later delivering RBI singles to put St. Louis in front. The Cardinals have the day off today.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced that they have recalled outfielder Shane Robinson from Memphis (AAA) and optioned right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez to the triple-A club.

James Shields tossed eight solid innings and Omar Infante went 3-for-5 with a two-run double, a run scored and a stolen base as the Kansas City Royals held on to beat the Oakland Athletics, 4-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set. Shields (10-6) held a perfect game through five innings and finished the day with only two runs allowed on just four hits and no walks. Nori Aoki and Salvador Perez each had RBI singles for the Royals, who have won four out of their last five games. The Royals also have the day off today.

The Kansas City Royals have placed first baseman Eric Hosmer on the 15-day disabled list with a fracture of the third metacarpal in his right hand. The Royals also activated pitcher Jason Vargas from the 15-day disabled list.

Memorial service for David Paul Lewis of Salem, age 71, will be held at 10:00 Wednesday morning at the Salem Full Gospel Church. Memorials may be made to the Lewis family. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Winford L. Matchell of Glendale, Arizona, age 87, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Freeman Cemetery in Crawford County.
