The Primary Election was held Tuesday and in Dent County, 2,722 people voted which is almost 29% of the registered voters. The only contested races locally were for the Republican Party. The unofficial results for the contested races are as follows:

The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Friday, July 30^th at 3:30 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 1000 block of East Center in reference to a domestic argument that led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem man and a 19-year old Salem woman for the violation of an ex-parte. Both were issued a summons to appear in court and were released. On Saturday, July 31^st at 10:30 p.m. an officer was dispatched to the 600 block of South Jackson in reference to a sexual assault. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 52-year old Salem man for the sexual assault on a 59-year old Salem woman. He was incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant. On Sunday, August 1^st at 4:30 in the morning, an officer on patrol discovered two subjects trespassing in the city pool that led to the arrest of a 28-year old Wakefield, Rhode Island woman and a 31-year old Merriam Wood man. Both were issued summons to appear in court and were released. At 6:00 p.m. that evening, an officer was sent to 1006 Craig Industrial Drive in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that person or persons unknown gained entry to a storage shed without permission. Taken from the storage shed was a two-piece gun cabinet, and toolbox with Craftsman tools. The total value of items taken was listed at $3000. Then at 9:00 p.m. an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to shoplifting. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of an 18-year old Salem man for stealing $32.50 of merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. The merchandise was returned to Wal-Mart. Anyone with information on the theft report, which is still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department, 729-4242.

Shoppers looking for a bargain on clothes, computers and school supplies can look forward to savings on these items once again as part of Missouri’s annul Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday. By state law, the sales tax holiday begins on the first Friday in August, August 6^th and continues through Sunday, August 8^th. During this time period, the state’s 4.225 percent sales tax will not be assessed on certain purchases made in Missouri. The Appropriate sales tax will not be charged on clothes that does not have a value of more than $100; school supplies, not exceeding $50 per purchase, that are used in a standard classroom for educational purposes; personnel computers that don’t cost more the $3,500 and computer peripheral devices that don’t exceed $3,500. The Dent County Fall Festival will be held Wednesday, August 11^th through Saturday, August 14^th at the Dent County Commons located on Highway 72. Be sure and bring your exhibition entries on Tuesday, August 10^th from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm to the Youth Building at the Commons. The judging of the entries will include horticulture, the bakery and pastry contest, canned fruits and vegetables, home economics, crafts and modeling, floriculture as well as display and exhibits. An accident occurred on Monday, July 26^th at 3:20 in the afternoon. According to the Salem Police report, a 1996 Dodge 1500 driven by John Watson of Salem was in the turn lane on Highway 32 facing westbound and was attempting to enter the lot of Mobil. Watson said there was a tractor-trailer coming from the eastbound lane and was wanting to get into the turn lane. The tractor-trailer driver motioned Watson across the lane and he struck a 2001 Saturn Neo driven by Joshua Breeding of Salem that was in the southbound lane on Highway 32 traveling east. Watson did not see the Saturn in the south lane. A passenger in the Saturn suffered injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Saturn was towed from the scene.

There will be a CBCO Blood Drive at the Salem Memorial District Hospital this Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. There is a need for type A positive, B positive and O positive. You must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health and present an ID.
