The Dent County Commissioners met for their meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In road reports, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5220 and 6180, while material would be hauled to Dent County Road 6200. He also stated that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5170, 5630, 5650, 6070 and 6110; and brown rock would be hauled from the creek. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2020 and 2300, while grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2210, 2370, 5225, 6130, 6140, and 6160. He stated that truck #118 would be serviced. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to clarify as well as inform the public that Dent County as well as the City of Salem would be participating in the Back To School Sales Tax Holiday starting Friday, August 3rd and ending Sunday, August 5th. Skiles reported that numerous areas in Dent County received rain Wednesday evening and some did not, therefore, the NO BURN BAN is still in effect for Dent County. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting continues until Monday, August 6th. The Dent County Clerk’s office will be open on Saturday, August 4th from 8:00 am to 12:00 (noon) for absentee voting and voters may also still vote in the clerk’s office until 5:00 pm Monday. Curley stated that Tuesday, August 7th is Election Day and voters must declare a party and present an ID. The polls will be open from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. If anyone has had an address or name change, they can stop by the clerk’s office or call 729-4144. The Dent County Commission sent a notice of award for bridgework on county road 5680 over Sinkin Creek to Widel Inc out of Blackwater, Missouri for $265,793.30. A reconstruction meeting between the Commission and the Contractor will be held on Monday, August 16th. The bridgework is expected to begin in September and should take about 60 days or less to complete. At the last meeting, Jan Lange with Century link discussed the phone rates for the county accounts, as the rate will remain the same for the next five years. The Commission voted to accept the rate and signed the agreement. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday, August 6th at the 9:00 am at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 12:30 Thursday afternoon in Phelps County on Eastbound I-44 at mile marker 200 about two miles east of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Ford Ranger driven by 21-year old Daniel Skaggs had a rear tire blow out making the vehicle overturn into the median. The vehicle then came to rest on it’s wheels on the roadway, blocking both eastbound lanes of traffic. Skaggs suffered serious injuries and was taken by Life Line to the Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Spurgeons Towing.
An accident occurred at 2:35 Thursday morning in Phelps County on Highway 68 about three miles north of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Ford Focus driven by 26 year-old Stephanie Fernandez of Linn ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Fernandez suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the St. James ambulance. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Owen’s Towing.
The livestock judging will be held today at the 4-H and FFA Expo at the Oakwood Mule Farm on Route HH starting with the hog show at 7:30 this morning. The sheep and goat show will be held at 1:30 this afternoon while the small animal show will start at 3:00. The dairy and beef cattle show will be starting at 4:00. The Ozark Mule Jump will be at 7:00 this evening. The ‘Dark Horse’ country music band will start playing around 8:30 tonight. Saturday will be the final day of the event and things will get started at noon with the buyer’s luncheon. The awards presentation and livestock auction will be at 2:00. There are no gate fees and everyone is invited to attend.
Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster wants to remind Missourian’s that the NO CALL LAW has been expanded to cover personal cell phones in addition to residential landlines. Missourians may register their cell phone numbers on his website at ago.mo.gov or by phone at 1-866-buzzoff (1-866-289-9633). Koster stated that the expanded law covers only cell phones primarily used for personal and family calls. Cell phones that are used primarily for businesses are not covered. The NO CALL registry is updated quarterly. Those who add their mobile numbers before November 1st will be covered as of January 1, 2013. More than 1.8 million Missouri households are currently on the NO CALL registry for their residential phones.
Enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year at the Salem Junior and Senior High Schools will be held Monday, August 6th through Thursday, August 9th, 9:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon each day. All students must attend to receive their schedules and locker assignments. A parent or guardian must attend to complete district required enrollment forms. On Monday, registration will be held for new high school and junior high students. On Tuesday, registration will be held for new high school students as well as Seniors and seventh graders. On Wednesday, Juniors and eighth graders will be able to register. On Thursday, registration will be held for Sophomores and ninth graders. All 7th, 8th and 9th grade students will enroll in the library of the Junior High building and all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students will enroll in the library of the Senior High School building. Students must be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and hepatitis B (3 doses, grades 7-12) unless an exemption has been signed by a physician or parent and filed with the school. A TD booster is required 10 years after the last dose. All students must present proof of compliance with the immunization rule by the first day of school, but are encouraged to bring records on registration day. A new state law requires that all students entering 8th grade must have a TD booster before starting school. No one will start school if immunizations are not up to date. Students not entering 8th grade will still be able to follow the 10-year repeat booster. Open House will be on Tuesday, August 14th for the Salem High School and Junior High from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The first day of school is scheduled for Wednesday, August 15th.

Josh Rutledge and Wilin Rosario each hit a two- run home run as the Colorado Rockies pounded the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-2, in the finale of a three-game series. Jon Jay and Carlos Beltran each drove in a run for the Cardinals, who had won six of eight coming in. Lance Lynn was charged with two runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts over six innings. Fernando Salas (1-4) was touched for three runs to take the loss. The Cardinals will start a three-game series tonight with Milwaukee Brewers and you can hear it at 6:40 on KSMO Radio.
Alcides Escobar drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Kansas City Royals completed a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians with a 7-6 win on Thursday at Kauffman Stadium. Aaron Crow (2-1) was credited with the win after tossing a scoreless top of the inning. Eric Hosmer smoked a three-run home run and Alex Gordon added a solo shot for the Royals, who earned the sweep on the heels of a five-game slide. The Royals will start a three-game series with the Texas Rangers tonight.
Michael Phelps beat Ryan Lochte to win the men's 200-meter individual medley Thursday night. This gives Phelps his 20th medal and 16th gold, extending both Olympic records. In other Olympic news, Gabby Douglas became the third straight U.S. women's gymnast to win the individual all-around competition, holding off Russia's Victoria Komova by less than three-tenths of a point to earn her second gold medal of the London Games. The U.S. now has 18 gold medals and 37 total medals, three more than China for the lead.

Funeral services for Delbert E. Errett of St. Charles, formerly of Rolla, age 90, will be held today at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Davis Cemetery near Vichy with Full Military Honors.
Funeral services for Marjorie Sue Pickett of Salem, age 77, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until time of service. Graveside service will be Thursday at the Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock, Tennessee. Memorials may be made to the Riverways Pregnancy Center.
