Former KSMO Radio Personality, writer, author and member of the Dillards, Mitch Jayne passed away Monday from cancer. Mitch hosted “Hickory Holler” on KSMO which featured the “Tick and Snake Report” as well as “Old Zeke.” He has written for such publications as the Salem News, Kaleidoscope and The Missouri Conservationist just to name a few. Jayne authored the books “The Forest in the Wind,” “Old Fish Hawk” that was made into a major motion picture in the 1970s; “Home Grown Stories and Home Fried Lies;” and “Fiddler’s Ghost” which received numerous accolades including The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Best Books of 2007, The Independent Book Publisher’s Gold Medal Award for Best Midwest Regional Fiction and in 2008, recipient of The Missouri Governor’s Humanities Book Award. Jayne was probably best known for his work as a member of the Dillards with Rodney and Doug Dillard and Dean Webb. They became the “Darling Boys” on the Andy Griffith Show in the early 1960’s and appeared on seven episodes and did a total of 14 songs. He wrote countless songs and during the live performances of the Dillards interjected Ozark humor. Jayne was a one-room school teacher when he first came to Dent County and use to weave those real life experiences into many of the stories he told.

The Salem Board of Aldermen regular meeting scheduled for Monday night was postponed due to illness of Alderman Kenneth Nash. The meeting is expected to be rescheduled later this week.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading was gointg to be done on Dent County Roads 2460, 2490, 4080 and 5600. He also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5130 and 6370 and that various chip and seal roads will be patched. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that service would be finished on grader #27, and grading is going to be done on Dent County Roads 2120, 2130 and 4330. He said that ditch work and grading is going to be done on Dent County Road 2250 with materials being added to the road. Larson reported that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 4050 and work is going to be done on truck #114. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the county received a multi-jurisdictional cyber crime grant of $11,612.35. Deputy Wayne Becker brought in the paperwork for the commission to sign. Skiles also reported that he and Sheriff Stallings visited the Crawford County 9-1-1 Center in Steelville that answers calls for Dent County on those persons who are on the Steelville Telephone Exchange with a prefix of 743. The 9-1-1 calls those people make have to be transferred to Dent County after being received at the Crawford County 9-1-1 Center. Mr. Charles Whitt, the Crawford County 9-1-1 director, is going to see if immediate information can go from those numbers directly to the Dent County 9-1-1 system without having to be transferred. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley is reminding everyone that the Primary election will be held today with polls open from 6:00 AM to 7:00. Those wishing to vote will need to choose a party at their polling location, and need to bring with them their voter ID card or some other form of identification. The commissioners approved the date of August 26^th as the tax levy hearing to set the rates for general revenue, road and bridge, SB40 fund and Senior Services Fund. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving shoplifting, a traffic stop and a theft. On Monday, July 26th at 4:05 p.m. an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued at $30.68.  She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Tuesday, July 27th at 10:12 a.m. an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 31-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $148.00.  He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 9:42 p.m. that evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem male for distribution of a controlled substance. He was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. On Wednesday, July 28th at 2:55 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered an unlocked vehicle in the 700 block of South Pershing and took a purse and contents valued $300.00.  The purse and some of the contents were recovered in a trash receptacle a few blocks away.  Anyone with any information regarding the theft report, which is still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

There will be a CBCO Blood Drive at the Salem Memorial District Hospital this Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. There is a need for type A positive, B positive and O positive. You must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health and present an ID.
