An accident occurred at 10:25 Saturday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about 14 miles south of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2004 Dodge Ram driven by 65-year-old Edna Albert of Salem was traveling north on Highway 19. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway when the driver overcorrected causing the vehicle to travel off the left side of the roadway, then it went back across the roadway and went off the right side of the road and overturned. Edna Albert suffered moderate injuries, while also the passenger Winton Albert suffered moderate injuries. Both were transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial Hospital. Each of them was wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.

The Jacks Fork River within Ozark National Scenic Riverways experienced flash flooding early Friday morning due to thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. The Shannon County Sheriff’s Office notified National Park Service Law Enforcement Rangers at approximately 4:30 AM about flash flood conditions within Alley Spring Campground. NPS Rangers and the Missouri State Water Patrol responded with multiple boats and vehicles. Officials evacuated 48 campsites, equaling over 200 people, and physically ferried approximately 45 campers at the Alley Spring Campground and backcountry sites, as well as people camping along the river on gravel bars. The Alley Spring Campground will remain closed until conditions improve and an assessment of the damage can be made.  Significant personal property was damaged in this incident. Flash flooding in the Spring Valley also caused a Round Spring Cave tour to become stranded on one side of Spring Creek.  The group of 16 emerged from the 2:00 PM ranger-led program to find the bridge hanging from one side. Rangers responded and ferried people to the opposite shore, safely getting everyone to their vehicles. Visitors should remain cautious and be aware that river and creek levels can change rapidly, especially during unpredictable weather conditions.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers, tonight beginning at 7:00 pm. The City requested bids for a single axle cargo trailer with double rear doors and received bids from Mid MO Trailer Sales in Westphalia for $1,999 and from Cowtown USA for $2,095. This was a budgeted item and $2,000 was allowed for the trailer. Also requested were bids for an 18-foot flatbed bumper pull trailer for the City’s recycling program and those bids will be read from Cowtown USA for $2,495; Shaw’s Truck Sales in Salem for $3,250; and Schafer Trailers in Salem for $3,650; and bids for polyethylene bins to be used for the recycling and only one bid from Dempster Industries, Inc. in Beatrice, Nebraska came in for $621 each for ten bins. These two items were not budgeted items but the funds will also come from a grant through the MRPC. Alderman Jim McDaniels, Jim Jackson, Kenneth Nash and Brad Nash will all discuss items involving the City of Salem and Mayor Gary Brown will also update and give his comments on items. During the introduction and reading of bills, Bill #3174 an ordinance annexing the property at 300 South Dilworth owned by Ralph and Laura Yohai, Bill #3175 an ordinance to authorize the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City and the Department of Transportation concerning a utility easements, and Bill #3176 and ordinance amending ordinance #3168 an budget adjustment to cover the cost of Well #8 repairs will be addressed. In new and miscellaneous business, City Clerk Mary Happel will be requesting the Board of Alderman to call for a public tax hearing on Monday, August 17^th at a time to be determined by the Board. After the bills are approved, the Board may then vote to go into Closed Session. The City of Salem Board of Alderman meeting is open to the public.

The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History will present “Mother Goose–Wet and Wild!” on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, starting at 6:30 p.m.  Learn about the special qualities and importance of water in our lives and how much of YOU is just plain H20! This program is especially designed for preschoolers, toddlers, and up to early elementary school-aged children. The cost is $1.00 per person or $5.00 per family, regardless of the number, which includes a light snack. Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Funeral services for James W. Harris of Salem, age 77, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday morning at 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or your choice.

A Funeral mass for Clara Louise Keeler of Steelville, age 90, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the St. Michaels Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:45 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.
