The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning.  In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that crews would be screening river rock that will be hauled to Bunker next week for the repaving of Main Street.  The City of Bunker, Reynolds County and Dent County are all helping with a portion of the project and Dent County will only be out transportation costs.  Simpson also said that ditch work is being done and materials are being hauled to Dent County Road 624 and work is being done on back slopes and ditches on Dent County Road 247.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that all of the District 2 crew is in the Boss area.  Crews are hauling dirt and placing a cross over pipe on Dent County Road 531, preparing a low water bridge for concrete and cutting brush throughout the area.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Grand Opening Ceremony of the shooting range at Indian Trail Archery and Gun on Wednesday; he said he would like to encourage everyone to use the range, enjoy it and take care of it.  Skiles also reported thatSusan Cunningham with Spatial Data would be at Monday’s meeting at 10:00 to discuss the cost of rural addressing.  Also at the meeting Commissioner Simpson reported that Dent County would be participating in this weekend’s Sales Tax Holiday.  Bernie English came by the meeting to inquire about the bad check fund that is generated through the Prosecuting Attorney’s office. The bad check fund is down $6100 from last year at this time and he wanted to know if he could get a copy of the paper showing this amount. County Clerk Angie Curley said that the Treasurer, Denita Williams, keeps these records and she could make him a copy.  Sandy Hogan, the Administrative Supervisor of the Senate Bill 40 Fund also stopped by the meeting to have the Commission approve the amended budget for the Enrichment Services of Dent County. The fund was amended by $70,000 that will be used for remodeling the Adult Activity Center.  Commissioner Simpson made the motion to approve, Commissioner Tune seconded and all agreed.  At the previous meeting Jim Reed came by to ask about getting the hospital tax levy eliminated. The Commission explained that it was voted in and would have to be a ballot issue to be voted back out and they also explained how the levies generate revenue. Commissioner Simpson made a motion to pay an employee for their overtime hours above and beyond their 240 hours. Half of the pay will come out of the Sheriff’s budget and the other half out of the General Revenue budget. Commissioner Tune seconded the motion and all agreed.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Missouri’s annual Sales Tax Holiday is set for this weekend, with the state sales tax of 4.225% lifted on most back-to-school items that include such things as clothing, school supplies, personal computers, and computer software. In conjunction with the lifting of the state sales tax, many Missouri cities and counties are lifting their local sales taxes on these items as well.

Pinch-hitter Jose Castillo singled home the game-winning run with two outs in the 11th inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates got consecutive wins for the first time in almost a month when they wrapped up a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park with a 5-4 win. With the score deadlocked at four, Pittsburgh got the game-winner in the 11th off Brad Thompson (6-5). Paulino homered for the Pirates, who ended a four-game losing streak with Wednesday's 15-1 pounding of the Cardinals in the second installment of this series, and now have back-to-back triumphs for the first time since a four-game win streak from July 3-6. Looking to snap a three-start losing streak, Pirates starter Shane Youman allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts over five frames. Salomon Torres (1-3) tossed two scoreless innings for the win. Albert Pujols homered for the Cardinals, who lost their second straight after a four-game winning streak. Yadier Molina ended 3-for-4 in the loss. Cardinals starter Anthony Reyes allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts over five frames. The Cardinals play again tonight at Washington, at 7:07, and you can hear that game on KSMO Radio.

Kansas City was scheduled to play the Minnesota Twins last night, but the Twins postponed the game due to the bridge collapse in Minneapolis.  The Royals will be back in action tonight against the Yankees in New York. Game time is 7:05.

Kansas City manager Buddy Bell announced early Wednesday he would resign after this season. The announcement comes at a surprising time, considering the Royals markedly improved play of late. The club had winning records in both June and July, the first time the Royals have had consecutive winning months since 2003. The 55-year-old Bell is in his second full season as manager. He took over on May 31, 2005 after Tony Pena resigned. Bell says he wants to spend more time with his family, however, health concerns may have played a major role his decision. The former manager of the Tigers and Rockies was diagnosed as having a cancerous growth behind his left tonsil, and missed the final 10 games of last season to have surgery.
