The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles was absent attending the board meeting of the County Commissioners Association of Missouri in Joplin. Assistant County Clerk Crystal Pilkington appointed Dennis Purcell to preside. Amanda McNew of New Harmony Church called in to request permission for the Church to use the Courthouse lawn and sidewalks to stage a 5K Color Run on September 14th. The Commissioners approved the request. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6190, 6633, 6540, 6545 and 6550. Purcell went on to say that materials would be added to county road 6190 and that brush was being cut on Dent County Road 6150; he also had one man repairing the air dryer on dump truck #117. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5330, 5335, 2160, 3333, 3335 and 3337. Larson went on to say that materials would be added to Dent County Roads 5330, 2160, 4060 and 2340. Larson also said that one man was cutting brush on Dent County Road 2130. Assistant Clerk Pilkington had nothing to report and the Commissioners asked her to solicit phone bids for gasoline. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at the Courthouse and it is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of July. During the month, they wrote nine equipment repair orders, 27 summons to appear in court, 55 warning tickets, and 63 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 13 accidents, one assault, six burglaries, one report of disorderly conduct, two report of dogs at large, three reports of domestic violence, one report of driving while drugged, two reports of driving while intoxicated, two reports of driving while revoked, one report of forgery, three reports of fraudulent use of a credit and/or debit device, and three reports of leaving the scene of an accident. The department also investigated two reports for open containers, six reports of property damage, one report of rape and/or statutory rape, one report of resisting and/or interfering with an arrest, one report of robbery, 42 reports of stealing, five reports of tampering, three reports of trespassing, one report of unlawful use of a weapon and five reports of 96-hour commitment. They also investigated three reports of possession of synthetic drugs. The police department received 1,951 calls for service during the month, and redirected 99 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 10 hours in court testifying, four hours as court bailiff and attended a training sponsored by Prosecutor Curley that focused on the investigation and manufacturing of meth. The calls in July included 27 calls for escorts, four calls for an intoxicated driver, one call for a prowler, six calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, five intoxicated pedestrian calls, five calls for domestic disputes, and four calls for a wrecker. There were three 911 calls, seven calls for a peace disturbance, 11 calls for alarms sounding, seven calls for fights in progress, 14 ambulance assist calls, and one fire call.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 9,991 miles and arrested 37 males and seven females during the month of July.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct their August meeting on Tuesday, August 6th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, there will be a review of the minutes from their July meeting, a financial report and the Board will then review bills and sign file copies. The Board will have a calendar review and the monthly reimbursement report. The Board will then address any old business and in new business the Board will set a tax levy meeting date. Fire Chief Brad Nash will update the Board on various issues and the Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The Board will set their next meeting for September 3rd at 6:00 at the fire station and the regular meeting will then adjourn. The meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors is open to the public.

The 2013 4-H/FFA EXPO will continue through August 3rd at the Oakwood Mule Farms on Highway HH. Today, August 2nd the hog show will start at 8:00 am, the sheep and goat show will begin at 1:30, the small animal show will start at 3:00 while the beef and dairy show will be 4:00. Tonight, family games and an evening of entertainment will be held from 7:00 to 10:00. Family games will include a turtle race, calf scramble, frog-jumping contest, youth relay races, a pet fashion show, and a greased pig contest. There will also be a nickel scramble, tug of war, a peewee stick horse race, super farmer for youth and adults and a chicken race. Then on Saturday, August 3rd the final day of the EXPO, the FFA pedal tractor pull will start off the day at 9:00, followed by the buyer’s luncheon at 12:00 (noon). The 4-H-FFA market sale and livestock auction will begin at 1:30 and if you are not able to attend, you can hear the entire auction on KSMO Radio or online at www.ksmoradio.com. The livestock auction will also be televised and played back starting on Sunday, August 4th. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy all the festivities.

The St. Louis Cardinals had lost seven straight contests, and this week blew their lead in the NL Central. They took out their frustrations on the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday night. Joe Kelly threw six shutout innings and the Cardinals got two RBI from Allen Craig, Jon Jay and Tony Cruz in a 13-0 rout at PNC Park. The Cardinals, who pounded out 17 hits and scored eight times in the seventh inning, won for the first time on this road trip. Kelly (2-3) allowed three hits and also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run. The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ball Park tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 5:35.

Billy Butler tallied two hits, two RBI and a run scored as the Kansas City Royals won their season-high ninth straight game, a 7-2 triumph over the Minnesota Twins to complete a three-game sweep. The Royals haven't won nine in a row since they started the 2003 campaign 9-0. Justin Maxwell made his Royals debut by providing a hit, a sacrifice fly and a run scored. James Shields (6-7) labored through six innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and five walks for the Royals, who finished off their first sweep of the Twins in Minnesota in 14 years. The Royals and New York Mets will start a three-game series at Citi Field tonight at 6:10.

The St. Louis Blues and defenseman Jay Bouwmeester agreed to a five-year contract extension on Thursday. Bouwmeester, who had one year left on his current deal, came over in a late- season trade with Calgary last April. He posted a goal and seven points in 14 games for the Blues before adding an assist in the first playoff action of his career. Selected third overall by Florida in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, the 29-year-old Bouwmeester has registered 72 goals and 235 assists in 764 career games.

Funeral services for Mildred Nadine Walker of Salem, age 72, will be held today at 11:00 at the Light House Assembly Church in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Light House Assembly Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Eual Richard Hutson of Salem, age 74, will be Saturday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until the service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Memorial services for William “Bill” Penning of Cuba, age 60, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time.

Graveside services and interment for Heath Barkley Hudson of Salem, age 46, will be held at 11:00 Monday morning at the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Services for Kayla Nicole Meade of Salem, age 21, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the New Harmony Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 at New Harmony. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Mr. Hobert Trentham of Licking, age 83, will be held Tuesday at 10:00 at the St. John Catholic Church in Licking. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.
