Enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year at the Salem Junior and Senior High Schools will be held Monday, August 6th through Thursday, August 9th, 9:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon each day. All students must attend to receive their schedules and locker assignments. A parent or guardian must attend to complete district required enrollment forms. On Monday, registration will be held for new high school and junior high students. On Tuesday, registration will be held for new high school students as well as Seniors and seventh graders. On Wednesday, Juniors and eighth graders will be able to register. On Thursday, registration will be held for Sophomores and ninth graders. All 7th, 8th and 9th grade students will enroll in the library of the Junior High building and all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students will enroll in the library of the Senior High School building. Students must be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and hepatitis B (3 doses, grades 7-12) unless an exemption has been signed by a physician or parent and filed with the school. A TD booster is required 10 years after the last dose. All students must present proof of compliance with the immunization rule by the first day of school, but are encouraged to bring records on registration day. A new state law requires that all students entering 8th grade must have a TD booster before starting school. No one will start school if immunizations are not up to date. Students not entering 8th grade will still be able to follow the 10-year repeat booster. Open House will be on Tuesday, August 14th for the Salem High School and Junior High from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The first day of school is scheduled for Wednesday, August 15th.
The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Sunday, July 15th at 10:19 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of South Askins in reference to a theft. The investigation led to the arrest of a 24-year old Salem female for disorderly conduct in lieu of being out of control and hindering an investigation. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The property reported stolen was located and returned to the owner. On Monday, July 16th at 10:22 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of North Jackson in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that someone took a hundred dollars in money and several rolls of quarters from a residence. That afternoon at 4:18 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of West Ninth in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed someone cut a tire, valued at $90, on a vehicle parked at a residence. On Tuesday, July 17th at 8:32 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to Fourth and Macarthur Streets in reference to damage to a vehicle. That investigation revealed that someone threw eggs on a vehicle causing an unknown amount of damage. On Thursday, July 19th at 1:00 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the City Park in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that three male juveniles of Salem had damaged a concrete sidewalk that had just been poured. The damage estimate is approximately $1,648. They were detained and later released. The report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. Anyone with any information regarding the burglary or property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
Today at the 4-H and FFA Expo at the Oakwood Mule Farm on Route HH will be a busy day as Livestock registration begins at 10:00 in the morning and will last until noon when the animals are to be in the stalls or pens. At 1:00, the livestock weigh-in and Ultrasound will begin. Starting at 5:30 will be the Achievement Day events before Family games and contest start at 7:00. Judging will be held on Friday, as the hog show will start at 7:30 in the morning. The sheep and goat show to be held at 1:30 in the afternoon while the small animal show will start at 3:00. The dairy and beef cattle show will be starting at 4:00. The Ozark Mule Jump will be at 7:00 in the evening. The ‘Dark Horse’ country music band will start playing around 8:30 that evening. There are no gate fees and everyone is invited to attend.

The Salem 7th grade girls’ basketball team finished 5-1 in the Show-Me Games that was held in Columbia July 20th-22nd. The team was coached by Brad Pryor and Sean Curley and consisted of Camryn Pryor, Payton Curley, Cheyenne Sercl, Kari Hatridge, Allie Fleener, Kaleigh Nash, and Baylee Bilyeu. They beat the St. Clair Juniors 34-30 in their first game and then went on the beat the Osceola Lady Outlaws 40-18, the St. Louis Rockets 44-26, the St. Louis Runnin’ Rebels 34-31, and the Ursa Lady Colts 35-15. In their final game they lost to the Missouri Flight (Springfield Area) 59-42.
Matt Holliday crushed a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning, sparking the Cardinals to a 9-6 victory over the Rockies in the second meeting of a three-game series. Holliday smacked two round-trippers and drove in five against his former team. Jake Westbrook earned the victory despite allowing five runs on nine hits over six innings of work. The Cards and Rockies play again tonight at 7:05 on KSMO.
The Royals used early offense to beat Cleveland, 5-2, earning back-to-back wins for the first time in more than a month. Kansas City scored four times over the first two innings and Luis Mendoza gave up four hits and a pair of runs over 7 1/3 frames in the 2nd game of this series. The Royals and Indians play again tonight.
Missy Franklin, Dana Vollmer, Shannon Vreeland, and Allison Schmitt gave the U.S. an Olympic record in the women's 800-meter freestyle relay Wednesday night. They won gold by 1.49 seconds over Australia and smashed the 2008 mark set by Australia. This gives the U.S. 12 gold medals and 29 total medals, only one behind China for the lead.

Funeral services for William E. Bottorff of Salem, age 94, will be held today at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County Animal Shelter. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Agnes Virginia Martin of Salem, age 83, will be Friday at 11:00 at the Salem Lutheran Church. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Public Library.
Funeral services for Olive Eileen Klass of St. Louis, age 88, will be Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 until the service time at 1:00 at the chapel. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Jewish Children Services.
