The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. In bids for the solid waste pickup and disposal services for the residents in the city, Director of Public Works Bill Huffman recommended going with Swinger Sanitation’s bid for three years that showed the city’s current carrier Waste Management with a lower bid for the first year, then higher the second and third year. But a Waste Management executive said that their bid is 17 cents less the first year and then a total of 16 cents more then next two years. He said that his figures show that their bid would actually save the city money of over $200 over the three-year bid. The board voted 2-2 on the recommendation by Huffman and Mayor Brown voted to review the numbers and make a decision at the next board meeting. In the consent agenda, the sales tax revenues were $96,196.18 and the mayor said that year to date, sales tax income is up $5,338. City Clerk Mary Happel said that the city finished under budget in almost every category as they budgeted a 10 million dollar budget for the year 2010-2011. She said that revenues and expenses came in at about 9.5 million dollars and that the figures would be put on the city’s website. She also said that the auditors will be in her office on August 22^nd. Public Works Director Bill Huffman said that he and the department heads are finished with the employee handbook, and that he and the city attorney will review it before it is put on the agenda for approval. Huffman also said that the K-9 officer would be in Indiana for ten days to be trained with the new drug dog and needs to take $1,100 with him for the dog. Donations are still being accepted to help pay for the dog. Alderman Jerry Randall thanked the mayor and Bill Huffman for not cutting off the electricity for people on the cutoff list due to the heat. Alderman Kenneth Nash wanted to thank MoDOT for the installation of an 80-foot culvert that will help the water problem at the Great Oaks Subdivision; and he wanted to thank the Commons Board and Donald Durham for bushhogging the old fairgrounds. Mayor Brown said that at the last Planning and Zoning Board meeting, they elected Jerry Craig as their new president, Mike Thompson as the vice-president and Wayne Bertz as secretary. He said that the Mid-Mo Power Energy Pool has put together a sample contract to be reviewed by the alderman and city attorney. Brown also said that there may be an agenda item at the next meeting to discuss the city’s involvement with the county, hospital and emergency management for an intercommunication system that would tie all the communication systems together. Brown said that there were 40 applicants for the new city administrator position as the deadline to submit an application was last Friday. He said that the Austin Peters rep would meet with the board of alderman at the next meeting to go over the top candidates. The board approved Bill #3234 that annexed the property at 701 South Dilworth owned by Joshua Rowe, tabled Bill #3235 due to a error on the bill, then approved Resolutions #13, 14, 15 and 16-2011 that authorized the mayor on behalf of the city to execute an agreement between the city and Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, SACBA, the Dent County Extension and Dent County Museum for services provided to the city. Resolution #12-2011 that dealt with the Salem TCRC was postponed until the September 6^th meeting when a presentation on the new ownership group could be presented to the board. The Corporate Cost Solutions, Inc. request for a contract with the city to review their Workman’s Comp insurance died due to a lack of a motion, and City Clerk Mary Happel requested that the tax rate hearing be held within the next board meeting on August 15^th. After the bills were approved the meeting was adjourned.

Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their traffic crash summary for the month of June. They reported that two fatalities were recorded during the month bringing the total fatalities for 2011 for Troop I to 13 which is the same as it was for six months in 2010. Last June, there was one fatality recorded in Troop I. A total of 166 accidents happened in Troop I in June of this year with 104 injuries and two fatalities reported compared to 191 accidents and 89 injuries with one fatality reported in June of 2010. In Dent County during the month of June, there were 13 accidents reported with 12 injuries while in Crawford County, there were 20 accidents reported with eight injuries. Phelps County had 52 accidents recorded during the month of June with 30 injuries and one fatality, while Pulaski County reported that 34 accidents happened there with 28 injuries and one fatality.

Nyjer Morgan's three-run double during a big fifth inning led the red-hot Brewers to a 6-2 victory over the Cardinals in the opener of a critical three-game series. The double capped a five-run inning and was the decisive hit in Milwaukee's seventh consecutive victory. The Brewers' winning streak has helped them establish a lead atop the National League Central, and Monday's victory further solidified their advantage. Milwaukee now leads St. Louis by 3 1/2 games. All of the runs were charged to Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter (6-8), who was pulled after the inning and absorbed his first loss since June 17. Carpenter allowed seven hits, walked two and fanned six. Matt Holiday had a two-run homer that accounted for the Card’s scoring. The two teams play again tonight at 6:35 on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off and will start a three game series with Baltimore tonight.

Former Blues forward Keith Tkachuk is on his way to the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. Tkachuk played 19 seasons in the NHL as a prolific power forward with the Winnipeg Jets/Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues and Thrashers. He registered 538 goals and 527 assists in 1,201 career games. The four-time Olympian is one of only four American-born players to score 500 NHL goals. Also to be enshrined are Chris Chelios, Gary Suter and play-by-play man, Mike “Doc” Emerick.

Graveside services for Terry William Loop of Jadwin, age 67, will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 at the Burnett Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the Texas County Hospice. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.

Funeral mass for Joe Reinbott of Salem will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Church in Salem. The Knights of Columbus ceremony and Rosary will begin at 10:30. Interment will be in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield at 2:00 on Friday. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Memorial service for Elisabeth Jane “BJ” Kinvon of Rolla, age 80, will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Christ Episcopal Church of Rolla building fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
