THE CITY OF SALEM BOARD OF ALDERMAN MEETING FOR TONIGHT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO THE ILLNESS OF AN ALDERMAN. THE MEETING WILL BE RESCHEDULED!!!!!

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers at 7:00. After roll call and approval of the consent agenda, Alice Schwartz will talk to the Board concerning a problem with teenagers in the parking lot of Century 21 causing disturbances in the neighborhood. Bids will then be reviewed for the John Deere 313 Skid-Steer Loader, 2007 International Bucket Truck, interest rates for the lease/purchase of a bucket truck, and airplane fuel for resale from the Salem Municipal Airport. In unfinished business, Mayor Gary Brown, with the approval of the Board, will appoint an Alderman to fill the unexpired term of the late East Ward Alderman Jim Jackson. The Mayor will then give his Public Works report. City Clerk Mary Happel will present Bills No. 3204 and 3205 for approval. Bill No. 3204 is an ordinance for the annexation of property in Brandon Heights into the City of Salem. Bill No. 3205 is and ordinance authorizing the Mayor to execute an agreement between the City of Salem and BWR for the providing of engineering services for the Salem Memorial Airport runway lighting project. Mary Happel will then request the Board call for a Public Tax Levy Hearing on August 16th. The Board will then go into closed session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

Last week, 19-year-old Garrett D.E. Washburn was arrested and charged with two felony counts of unlawful possession, manufacture, transport, repair or sale of certain weapons from an incident that occurred in Salem on July 27th when the Missouri State Highway Patrol Bomb Squad was called in to a residence on South Water Street. A metal hand grenade was recovered by the bomb squad at the residence. The device was discovered by sheriff’s deputies after they had been given permission to search the residence. Everyone within 100 yards of the area was asked to evacuate at the request of the bomb squad and ATF. Officers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Dent County Sheriff's Office and Salem Police Department secured the perimeter by closing all streets accessible to the area while awaiting the bomb squad and ATF. The device was removed from the residence and was disposed of at the Salem Police Department firing range.

An accident happened Thursday afternoon in Phelps County on Route M about 2/10ths of a mile south of Phelps County Road 7670. According to the highway patrol report, a 2002 Harley Davidson Flight Cruiser driven by 51-year old Robert J. Vinyard of Edgar Springs, was traveling eastbound and attempted to avoid a vehicle that was turning left. The Harley Davidson began to skid and overturned, impacted the road and ejected Vinyard. He suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Fort Leonard Wood Hospital by the Phelps County Ambulance. The Harley Davidson sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Dishman’s Towing of Rolla.

The Bonebrake Center of Nature and History will host Mother Goose - Wet and Wild tonight starting at 6:30. Learn about the special qualities and importance of water. The cost is $1 per person or $5 for the whole family. Phone reservations are requested by calling 729-3400 to plan for snacks and activities. The program is designed for preschoolers, toddlers and up to early elementary school aged children.

The Back to School Fair held Thursday, July 29th at the Old City Hall assisted over 400 area students with their back-to-school needs.  The fair was hosted by the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency and the numerous vendors that volunteered their time to help our students and their parents. 

There will be a CBCO Blood Drive at the Salem Memorial District Hospital this Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. There is a need for type A positive, B positive and O positive. You must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health and present an ID.

Adam Wainwright continued his dominance at home and Albert Pujols clubbed a two-run home run as the St. Louis Cardinals completed a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 9-1 win. Wainwright (15-6) moved his mark to 11-0 this season in 12 starts at Busch Stadium. He gave up one run on six hits with five strikeouts over seven innings and went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Brendan Ryan went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Matt Holliday slugged a solo homer, while Aaron Miles had two hits and three RBI for the Cardinals, who have won four of their last five. They will host the Houston Astros tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired pitcher Jake Westbrook from the Cleveland Indians in a three-team trade that also involves the San Diego Padres. Along with Westbrook, St. Louis acquired cash from the Indians and minor league pitcher Nick Greenwood from San Diego. The Padres got outfielder Ryan Ludwick from the Cardinals, while the Indians received minor league pitcher Corey Kluber from the Padres. The Cardinals also activated outfielder Nick Stavinoha from the disabled list.

Mitch Maier's RBI single in the sixth inning was the eventual game-winning hit and Alex Gordon added a homer as Kansas City clipped Baltimore, 5-4, in the finale of a four-game series from Kauffman Stadium. Billy Butler, Jose Guillen and Wilson Betemit also drove in a run each for the Royals, who took the final three games in the series. Bruce Chen (6-5) worked five-plus innings and allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits for the win. Joakim Soria worked out of trouble in the ninth to post his 29th save. The Royals will be in Oakland tonight.

The Atlanta Braves acquired outfielder Rick Ankiel, reliever Kyle Farnsworth and cash from the Kansas City Royals just prior to Saturday's trade deadline. In exchange, the Royals netted reliever Jesse Chavez, outfielder Gregor Blanco and minor league pitcher Tim Collins. The Kansas City Royals have also extended manager Ned Yost's contract through the 2012 season on Saturday. Yost is in the midst of his first season with the Royals after replacing Trey Hillman earlier in the year.

Funeral services for Dorothy Maxine Wilson of Bunker, age 81, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery.

Funeral services for Herbert O. Meschke of Rolla, age 86, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rolla. Interment will be in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Rural Rolla with full military honors. Memorials are suggested to the Redeemer Lutheran Church Family Life Center.

Funeral services for Barry Lee Redman of Salem, age 40, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Barry Redman.
