The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. Due to the absence of Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles, Dent County Clerk Angie Curley appointed District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson to serve as Acting Presiding Commissioner. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that for the most part it was too dry in District 1 to do any grading. He went on to say that ditch work would be done on Dent County Road 6220, 6040 and 6460 and that brush would be cut on county road 4210. Purcell went on to say that materials would be added to county road 6220, 6400, 6370, and 6230. Purcell also said that maintenance was being done on truck #117, while a crew was working and doing maintenance around the shop. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading would be done in his district on Dent County Road 2370, 4030 and 4300, and that materials would be added to county roads 3180 and 3140. He went on to say that grading would be done and materials added to county road 2200. Larson added that crossover pipes would be installed on county roads 3180 and 3140 and that tires were being put on truck #110. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that absentee voting continues in her office, which will be open Saturday from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon for absentees. She went on to say that the last day to absentee vote in her office is Monday at 5:00 pm. Curley reminded voters that Tuesday is Election Day and that the polls will be open from 6:00 am until 7:00 pm. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 in the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Green Forest R-2 will be having a day of enrollment on Tuesday, August 5th from 9:00 to 2:00. Any new students moving into the district should come to the school to enroll. Green Forest will then have an open house on Monday, August 11th from 6:30 until 7:30.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Thursday, July 24th at 3:33 in the early morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1400 block of South Washington in reference to a noise complaint. The investigation of the report revealed that the occupants were playing loud music and have had numerous complaints previously. Further investigation led to the arrest of a 40-year old Salem female for peace disturbance and disorderly house. She was issued summonses to appear in court and released. On Friday, July 25th at 10:22 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of the driver, a 58-year old Salem female, for driving while drugged. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Saturday, July 26th at 2:00 in the afternoon, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 24-year old Salem male, for possession of heroin with intent to sell and a 36-year old Salem female for possession of heroin with intent to sell, possession of opium, and possession of drug paraphernalia. They were incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that evening at 5:13, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of East Third in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that someone entered the basement of a residence and took a Craftsman trimmer valued at $100. On Sunday, July 27th at 1:43 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 29-year old Salem female for driving while intoxicated. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that evening at 10:03, an officer was detailed to Fourth Street and Highway 19 in reference to a male subject in traffic trying to stop vehicles. That investigation led to the arrest of a 39-year old Licking male for possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. The Dent County Fire Protection District has released their reports for the week of July 21st. On the 21st at 5:44 in the evening, the fire district responded to an accident at the intersection of Highway 32 and South McArthur. Eight firefighters responded to the call and provided general cleanup and traffic control in the area. All units were back in service at 6:30 that night. On Wednesday, the 23rd at 12:53, eight firefighters responded to an accident on Highway 19 North with injuries. Personnel provided first aid and checked for injuries before being back in service by 1:50 in the afternoon. Fire personnel were dispatched on Thursday morning, July 24th at 1:07 to a one-vehicle accident on Highway 68 North. Four firefighters arrived at the scene and provided first aid and checked for injuries. All units were back in service at 1:54 that morning. Also on the 24th at 10:20 in the morning, three firefighters provided the manpower to create a landing zone for a helicopter. Personnel were back in service at 11:03 that morning. Also on the 24th at 5:22 in the afternoon, the fire district responded to a two-vehicle accident with injuries at the corner of West Franklin and South Orchard Streets. Ten firefighters responded to the call and provided first aid and checked for injuries on two people. Automatic aid was provided by the Salem Memorial District Hospital. All units were back in service by 6:06 that evening.

The 86th Annual Dent County Fall Festival will be held at the Commons in Salem tonight to Saturday, August 2nd. Friday, gates and exhibit building opens at 4:00 in the afternoon kids games are from 5:00 to 7:00, carnival opens at 6:00, the Big Roy Stevenson Band starts playing at 6:30, and the motorcycle and ATV races begin at 6:30. On Saturday, gates open at 8:30 in the morning, the fun dog show starts at 9:00, children’s pageant begins at 10:00, the exhibit building opens at noon, kids games will be from noon until 2:00, quarters in the haystack will be at 2:00, the demolition derby gate opens at 6:00 in the evening, the evening carnival begins at 6:00, pulled pork BBQ starts at 6:00, and the exhibit building closes at 9:00 that night. General admission for the motorcycle and ATV races will be $5 for adults and $2 for children under 10. General admission for the demolition derby will be $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10.

Registration for all middle school and high school students will be held next week. Starting on Monday, August 4

th, registration for any student entering grades sixth through twelfth that is new to the Salem R-80 School District will be held. This does not include rural school students. On Tuesday, August 5th, seniors and eight graders will be able to register as well as any new student that is new to the district. On Wednesday, August 6th, registration will be for juniors and seventh graders. On Thursday, August 7th, sophomores and sixth graders can register. Then on Friday, August 8th, freshman and anyone who has failed to register may come in and register. Students will need to register at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1201 West Rolla Road, from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.  There will be no registration held at the Highs School or the Middle School.

Shelby Miller worked six innings for his first win in almost two months and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Thursday to avoid being swept in a three-game series. Miller (8-8) struck out five and gave up two runs on three hits and no walks. Oscar Taveras hit a two-run homer and Matt Holliday added a two-run single for the Cardinals, who won for only the third time in their last nine games. The Cardinals will host the Milwaukee Brewers tonight at Busch Stadium for three games. You can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired veteran right-handed starting pitcher John Lackey, minor league left-handed pitcher Corey Littrell, and cash considerations from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for pitcher Joe Kelly and outfielder Allen Craig. Lackey, 35, is among the American League leaders in wins this season and has posted a 3.60 ERA in his 21 starts (11-7, 3.60 ERA). He owns a career mark of 149-114 with a 4.02 ERA between the Angels (2002-09) and Red Sox (2010-14). The 6-6, 235-pound Lackey is 6-5, 3.03 ERA career in postseason play, making 19 appearances.

Alcides Escobar's two-run triple broke a tie game in the seventh inning, and the Kansas City Royals upended the Minnesota Twins, 6-3, in the rubber match of a three-game series. Mike Moustakas drove in a run and scored twice for the Royals, who scored four times in the seventh and moved within four games of first-place Detroit in the AL Central. Yordano Ventura (8-8) had seven strikeouts over a seven-inning performance in which he allowed five hits and a pair of runs, one earned, in Kansas City's seventh victory in nine contests. The Royals will be in Oakland tonight to start a three-game series with the Athletics.
