Judge Jean C. Hamilton sentenced 39-year old David Orin Gray Jr. of Salem to five years and three months on a federal charge of conspiracy to possess pseudoephedrine knowing that it would be used to manufacture methampheptamine in the Dent County area. The sentencing was held in U.S. District Court in St. Louis. Gray has been held in federal custody since his arrest on federal charges in January. The sentence starts immediately and Gray will have to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence. Gray's attorney, David Simpson of St. James, asked the judge to place Gray on probation and produced character witnesses for Gray. Gray was one of ten Dent County residents arrested and charged in a federal investigation this past January. Gray pled guilty in May to conspiracy to possess pseudoephedrine knowing that it would be used to manufacture methamphetamine in exchange for the government dropping the other charges.

The City of Salem and Dent County will be participating in Missouri’s 5th annual, “Back-to-School” sales tax holiday is set for this weekend, beginning today through Sunday, August 3rd. During this period, certain clothing (any article having a taxable value of $100 or less), school supplies (not to exceed $50 per purchase), personal computers and computer peripheral devices (not to exceed $3,500), and software (taxable value of $350 or less) will be exempt from the state sales tax of 4.225 percent. State sales tax will not be collected on qualified items regardless of sales location and in some areas, local jurisdictions are also participating in the holiday, and purchases will be exempt from both state and local sales tax. This year, 170 cities, 52 counties, and eight taxing districts are not participating in the sales tax holiday. A full list of non-participating cities, counties and districts is listed on the Missouri Department of Revenue’s Internet site at www.dor.mo.gov.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that all crew members would be on Dent County Roads 4110, 4120 and 4210 helping the counties chip and seal vendor add a single layer of chip and seal to those roads. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that a crew would be prepping a portion of Dent County Road 3260 for chip and seal and another crew would be hauling rock to Dent County Road 2330. Tune also said it was reported that Boss received a substantial amount of rain and winds up to 60 mph Wednesday evening, so crew members would be in that area checking for washouts and downed trees.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to report that he attended a Pandemic Bird Flu Exercise Tuesday afternoon in St. James.  Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the courthouse will be open this Saturday from 8 am until noon for absentee voting. Also at the meeting, Lela Cotner and Ellen Baum from the Sheltered Workshop stopped by to talk with the Commissioners about the rural addressing signs their employees can make to help emergency vehicles respond quicker to an emergency. The signs are 24 inches tall, red in color and have the residence box number on them and are placed on a post somewhere visible by an emergency vehicle. Cotner said that Phelps County has made it mandatory for all residents to post these signs for E-911 purposes. The Commission said Dent County does not have E-911 and would not make it mandatory for anyone to post a sign, but they would recommend it. Cotner said the price of the sign depends on steel prices, but would likely fall between $20 and $25. The signs will become available after all the rural addressing is complete and for more information on how to get a sign contact the Sheltered Workshop at 729-6264. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
