Registration for all middle school and high school students will be held next week. Starting on Monday, August 4th, registration for any student entering grades sixth through twelfth that is new to the Salem R-80 School District will be held. This does not include rural school students. On Tuesday, August 5th, seniors and eight graders will be able to register as well as any new student that is new to the district. On Wednesday, August 6th, registration will be for juniors and seventh graders. On Thursday, August 7th, sophomores and sixth graders can register. Then on Friday, August 8th, freshman and anyone who has failed to register may come in and register. Students will need to register at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1201 West Rolla Road, from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.  There will be no registration held at the Highs School or the Middle School.

Mark Twain National Forest is once again partnering with Mt. Adams Institute and AmeriCorps to offer military veterans one-time, eleven-month natural resources management career development internships during 2014-2015 in Salem. The two internships at Mark Twain National Forest’s Salem Ranger District include Engineering Intern and Recreation, Wilderness and Trails Intern. For specifics on all available internships, visit www.mtadamsinstitute.com/jobs. Deadline to apply is Friday, August 15th but selections may be made and individual positions filled before that time as sufficient candidate pools become available.  The internships begin August 25th, 2014, and run through June 28th, 2015. Interns will support Mark Twain National Forest employees in a variety of jobs. Skills needed vary by position, but include use of hand tools and power tools; map reading; public speaking and supervisory experience. Each selected intern will receive $12,100 living allowance for the 45-week internship. Upon successful completion of the internship, they will receive an additional $5,550 education stipend. The stipend may be used to repay qualified student loans or for further education at a higher learning accredited institution, vocational or trade schools.  For those who qualify, there will be basic medical insurance for interns only, and assistance with funding for childcare. Qualified interns must be 21-35 years old and honorably discharged US military veterans. Selected interns will also qualify for other available federal jobs for 120 days after completing the internship. One position available is a Survey Intern at the Mark Twain National Forest Supervisor’s Office in Rolla. The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Tuesday, July 15th at 8:56, a 25-year old Salem male was taken into custody on an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. He was incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Wednesday, July 16th at 7:15 in the morning, an officer transported an 18-year old Rolla female from the Phelps County Jail to the Dent County Jail in lieu of an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. Later that morning at 8:04, an officer was detailed to the Dent County Memorial Chapel in reference to property damage. That investigation revealed that someone damaged a seven-foot tall concrete statue, valued at $2,000. On Thursday, July 17th at 12:05 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of South Carty in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a tool chest and tools, valued at $1,500, from the garage of a residence. At 8:31 that night, an officer located a 21-year old Salem female in the 1000 block of South Warfel who had an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. She was taken into custody and incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Sunday, July 20th at 4:55 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted in reference to a theft from the Casey's General Store on Highway 32. That investigation revealed that a 37-year old Salem female had taken money from a collection jar located on the counter. At 8:34 that night, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of an 18-year old Salem male for stealing merchandise valued at $90. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Monday, July 21st at 12:45 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of East Third in reference to supplying electric to another residence. That investigation revealed that a 44-year old Salem female had run an extension cord to another residence that had been previously disconnected. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 12:47 that same afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Fourth Street Mall in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took twenty dollars cash from a purse that was in the office. On Wednesday, July 23rd at 2:47 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone entered a residence and took copper pipe, a cook stove, a furnace and floor tile valued at $350. That same afternoon at 2:56, an officer was detailed to the Phil-Mart service station in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that the driver of a white Kia Sedona pumped $60.01 in fuel and left without paying. Officers located the vehicle near Highway 32 and Wines and conducted a traffic stop. After further investigation, officers placed a 29-year old Salem female under arrest for the theft of fuel. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The 86th Annual Dent County Fall Festival will be held at the Commons in Salem tonight to Saturday, August 2nd. Today, gates and exhibit building opens at 5:00 in the evening while the carnival opens at 6:00 and the beauty pageant begins at 6:00 as well. On Friday, gates and exhibit building opens at 4:00 in the afternoon kids games are from 5:00 to 7:00, carnival opens at 6:00, the Big Roy Stevenson Band starts playing at 6:30, and the motorcycle and ATV races begin at 6:30. On Saturday, gates open at 8:30 in the morning, the fun dog show starts at 9:00, children’s pageant begins at 10:00, the exhibit building opens at noon, kids games will be from noon until 2:00, quarters in the haystack will be at 2:00, the demolition derby gate opens at 6:00 in the evening, the evening carnival begins at 6:00, pulled pork BBQ starts at 6:00, and the exhibit building closes at 9:00 that night. General admission for the motorcycle and ATV races will be $5 for adults and $2 for children under 10. General admission for the demolition derby will be $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10.

The Salem Area Arts Council is sponsoring a Beginning Water Color Painting Class at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center tonight at 6:00 p.m. The class will be taught by Gary Nash.  Registration may be made today through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the ONCRC located at 202 South Main Street, Salem. Will Venable and Jedd Gyorko homered and knocked in four runs apiece to back seven solid innings from Jesse Hahn, as the San Diego Padres routed the St. Louis Cardinals, 12-1, in the middle contest of a three-game series. Peter Bourjos drove in the lone run for the Cardinals, who saw starter Joe Kelly (2-2) give up four runs on seven hits over five innings. The Cardinals and Padres play again this afternoon and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 2:05.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced that they have acquired right-handed starting pitcher Justin Masterson from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for Double-AA outfielder James Ramsey. Masterson, who will join the Cardinals on Friday in St. Louis, is scheduled to start Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Alex Gordon provided the go-ahead RBI double as the Kansas City Royals used a sixth-inning rally to top the Minnesota Twins, 3-2, in the middle test of a three-game set on Wednesday. Gordon finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI, while Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas each hit an RBI double for the Royals, who bounced back from a 2-1 loss in the series opener on Tuesday. The Royals and Twins play again tonight.

The Kansas City Royals have acquired catcher Erik Kratz and pitcher Liam Hendriks from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for infielder Danny Valencia. The Royals also recalled infielder Christian Colon from Triple-A Omaha while catcher Brett Hayes was designated for assignment.
