The Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center has extended the exhibit, “The Current River” through this Friday, August 2nd. The LAD Foundation, Bank of Salem, Community Foundation of the Ozarks and the Salem Area Arts Council are sponsoring the exhibit. The exhibit features a number of old photographs and artifacts telling the story of how the river was formed through the logging, mining, farming and tourism industries. It also portrays how the people lived and worked along the river from the early days of its development to today as part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center is open from 9:00 in the morning until 5:00 at 202 South Main Street. If you have questions or need more info, call the ONCRC at 729-0029.

The 2013 4-H/FFA EXPO will be held today through August 3rd at the Oakwood Mule Farms on Highway HH. Today, the 4-H exhibit judging starts at 10:00 am, the dessert entries are due by 5:00 and the dessert auction starts at 6:00. On Thursday, August 1st, the livestock registration will be held from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Livestock weigh-ins will be at 1:00, and family games and an evening of entertainment will be from 7:00 to 10:00. Family games will include a turtle race, calf scramble, frog-jumping contest, youth relay races, a pet fashion show, and a greased pig contest. There will also be a nickel scramble, tug of war, a peewee stick horse race, super farmer for youth and adults and a chicken race. On Friday, August 2nd the hog show will start at 8:00 am, the sheep and goat show will begin at 1:30, the small animal show will start at 3:00 while the beef and dairy show will be 4:00. That evening family games and an evening of entertainment will once again be held from 7:00 to 10:00. Then on Saturday, August 3rd the final day of the EXPO, the FFA pedal tractor pull will start off the day at 9:00, followed by the buyer’s luncheon at 12:00 (noon). The 4-H-FFA market sale and livestock auction will begin at 1:30 and if you are not able to attend, you can hear the entire auction on KSMO Radio or online at www.ksmoradio.com. The livestock auction will also be televised and played back starting on Sunday, August 4th. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy all the festivities.

Sho-Me Power is working on repairs to the switch gear that turns the power on and off to the city in emergency situations, and they will need to put it back in service which means they will again kill power to the City of Salem on Thursday August 1st at 10:00 am. Once again, it should only take one hour for the repairs to be completed, the same as the first outage. If you are a person that is dependent on electricity for medical or for daily living needs, please make alternative arrangements on those days to safeguard your health. The Old City Hall and the Oak Grove Church will again be open and operating on generator during this time of day. The City of Salem and Sho-Me Power apologizes for any inconvenience this causes.

The 2013 Senior Olympics are being hosted in Cleveland, Ohio this year, and the team from Missouri returns as the defending champions. The team is comprised of Larry Sexton, Joe Brickner, Charles Pace, John Brown and Randy Noll. On the opening day of pool play, the Missouri team defeated Pennsylvania by the score of 75-45, and then beat Louisiana, 63-45. Missouri played their last pool play game Monday morning. They beat Georgia 57-23 to win their pool play with a record of 3-0. Monday afternoon they started the double elimination tourney by beating Texas 51-48 in the first round, then defeated Ohio, 53-33 in the quarterfinals of the winners bracket. Tuesday morning the two remaining undefeated teams, Arkansas and Missouri, played with Arkansas coming out as the victor. Missouri was down 3 at half. There are now 3 teams remaining with Arkansas the lone team on the winning side, and Missouri and Texas in the losers bracket. They will play each other for the second time and the winner of the losers bracket game will play Arkansas for the National Championship today. The loser in the loser’s bracket game will be awarded the bronze medal for 3rd place.

The Salem Tigers age 14 and under traveling baseball team won 1st place at the Show Me Games which were held July 26th -July 28th. The team is comprised of members Nate Bray, Dalton Cook, Cooper Davis, Eli Floyd, Cory Manthey, Kobe Mead, Jake Pryor, Kory Ramsey and Logan Woolf. The baseball team was coached by Brock Cook & Tony Floyd. Congratulations Tigers!!!

Alex Presley's walk-off single in the 11th inning was the difference, as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-1, in the opener of a doubleheader at PNC Park. Matt Holliday went 2-for-5 and drove in the lone run for the Cardinals. In the second game, Brandon Cumpton spun seven scoreless innings to help lift the Pittsburgh Pirates past the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-0, as the Pirates moved back into first place in the NL Central. The Cardinals are currently in the midst of a season-high six-game losing skid, where they have managed to score just six runs in that span. The Cardinals and Pirates will play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting at 5:30.

Mike Moustakas had two home runs and four RBI, and the Kansas City Royals defeated the Minnesota Twins, 7-2, in the opener of a three-game series at Target Field. Miguel Tejada, David Lough and Eric Hosmer had one RBI apiece for the Royals, who are on a seven-game winning streak and are above .500 (52-51) this late in the season for the first time since 2003. Ervin Santana (7-6) gave up two runs on four hits and a walk while fanning eight over seven innings. He's allowed five runs in 23 1/3 innings since surrendering eight runs on July 11. The Royals and Twins will play again tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Elinor K. Brewer of Licking, formerly of Salem, age 90, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family or by perennials.

Graveside services for Betty Gean Davidson of Jefferson City, formerly of Salem, age 71, will be held today at 1:30 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be this morning from 11:00 until 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of your choice.

Funeral services for Mildred Nadine Walker of Salem, age 72, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Light House Assembly Church in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at the church. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Light House Assembly Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Memorial services for William “Bill” Penning of Cuba, age 60, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until service time Saturday.
