The Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County would like to notify customers that they strongly encourage water conservation due to the extremely hot and dry weather conditions. Your co-operation would be greatly appreciated!
The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5080, 5380, 6010, 6570 and 6585. He stated that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5530 and 6180, and that two men would be hauling brown gravel to the shed. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2070, 4060, 5225 and 5240. He indicated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2020 and materials would be hauled to Dent County Road 2135. District 2 will also have a person hauling brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Public Transportation Human Services Transportation Planning meeting last Thursday that addresses the transportation needs of communities as well senior services and residential care facilities. In Dent County, the SMTS bus coordinates the transportation needs to get people where they need to go. For more information about the SMTS bus, citizens can call 729-3133. Skiles says that these transportation plans must be updated every five years. Skiles also mentioned that it is still extremely dry in Dent County and the “burn ban” remains in effect. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting continues through Monday, August 6th, and that her office will be open this Saturday for absentee voting from 8:00 AM until noon. She said that the deadline to request a mail-out ballot is this Wednesday. Remember with the primary, you must declare the party that you wish to vote for. She also said that if you have moved or changed your name to please call her office at 729-4144 so that she can tell you what your precinct is and where you are to vote. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County 4-H and FFA Expo at the Oakwood Mule Farm on Route HH will be open for the entry of exhibits this afternoon from 2:00 until 6:30. Tomorrow, the exhibit judging will be held from 10:00 in the morning until 1:00, and the Dessert Auction will be held at 6:00. There is no charge to attend any of the events and there are no gate fees.
An accident occurred on Sunday at 10:15 in the morning in Phelps County on Phelps County Road 1130 about 2.5 miles north of St. James. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2008 Ford Escape driven by 17-year old Leah Ybarra of St. James traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a bridge. Ybarra suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by private conveyance. The Escape sustained moderate damages and was towed by Spurgeon’s Towing.
An accident occurred on Monday, July 23rd at 4:10 in the afternoon on Highway 19 and Adelman Street. According to the Salem Police Department, a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Chad Sells of Salem was traveling northbound on Highway 19 when his excessive speed and failure to yield made him strike the rear of a 1996 Toyota Avalon driven by Darrin Smith of Salem. The Cavalier sustained extensive damage while the Avalon sustained moderate damage. Both vehicles were towed by Whitaker’s Towing. No injuries were reported.

Kansas City Royals designated hitter Billy Butler was named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending July 29. Butler hit .458 with three doubles, one home run and six RBI in a seven-game road trip. For the week, Butler led the AL in on-base percentage (.552), tied for first in hits (11), was second in batting average and doubles (three) and was fourth in slugging percentage (.708). The 26-year-old won his fourth weekly award and first since August 1, 2011. Butler became the eighth Royal to pick up 200 doubles on Thursday and crushed his 20th home run of the season on Wednesday, and now stands one shy of his career high.
The Kansas City Royals will try to recover from a four game sweep at the hands of the Seattle Mariners as they host the Cleveland Indians tonight. Luke Hochevar goes for the Royals against Derek Lowe of the Indians.
The Kansas City Chiefs on Monday signed linebacker Edgar Jones and placed defensive back Kyle McCarthy on injured reserve. Jones spent the last five seasons with the Ravens, recording 22 tackles over 41 games. He also spent some time at tight end in Baltimore.
In the Olympics on Monday, Missy Franklin set an American record with a time of 58.33 seconds to win swimming gold in the women's 100-meter backstroke. Franklin touched the wall .35 seconds ahead of Emily Seebohm of Australia. American Matthew Grevers also won swimming gold in the men's 100 backstroke, with his time of 52.16 seconds shaving .38 seconds off the Olympic record. U.S. teammate Nick Thoman won silver. American Marti Malloy picked up a bronze medal on Monday in the women's 57kg judo competition. Today, Jordyn Wieber hopes to shake off Sunday's all-around disappointment and lead the U.S. women's gymnastics squad to its first team gold medal since the 1996 Games in Atlanta. The reigning world champion in the all-around, Wieber notched the fourth-best all-around score in the women's qualifiers, but did not make the cut for the individual event because she finished behind teammates Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas. Rules state that a country can send no more than two gymnasts to an individual event.

Funeral services for Peggy McDonald of Salem, age 52, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery.
Funeral services for William E. Bottorff of Salem, age 94, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Dent County Animal Shelter. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
Funeral services for Agnes Virginia Martin of Salem, age 83, will be Friday at 11:00 am at the Salem Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salem Public Library.
Funeral services for Olive Eileen Klass of St. Louis, age 88, will be Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 until the service time at 1:00 at the chapel. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Jewish Children Services.
Funeral arrangements for Jackie Ham of St. James, age 63, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
