The Missouri Division of Tourism will be hosting a FREE seminar on Tuesday, August 5^th from 10:00 to 2:00 pm at the Salem TCRC. Scott McCullough, Division of Tourism’s Web Editor, will discuss the VisitMO website, a free service and how it can benefit local tourism-related business, as well as what the Missouri Division of Tourism can do for you and more. Anyone who operates a tourism-related business or event in Missouri is encouraged to attend. The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage. On June 23^rd at 8:30 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the 1000 block of South Hickory in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown broke the glass out of a door at the residence. The glass is valued at $20. On June 24^th at 5:04 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the Dent County Animal Shelter in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown damaged the storage-shed doors by prying them open. The damage is valued at $100. On June 26^th at 5:22 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of West Third in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown broke the back glass out of a Dodge Caravan. The damage is valued at $200. On June 30^th at 9:13 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 500 block of South Pershing in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown broke the back glass out of a blue 2002 Chevrolet Venture van. The damage is valued at $300. Anyone with any information regarding any of the property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

Almost anything can be considered or used as a tool. Tools come in many varieties and their uses are as varied as the people who once used them. That fact will be evident at the “Tools That Built America” event at Alley Spring on Saturday, August 2^nd and Sunday, August 3^rd from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Native Americans used stone, shell and other objects from nature as tools to supply their tribe’s hunting and gathering needs. Europeans fashioned iron, steel, and wood to create a variety of tools. Women used flat irons, spinning wheels and cooking tools to make a house into a home. Other tools such as banjos, fiddles and mandolins were used to create the sounds of the Ozark Mountains and to tell the story of its inhabitants. Demonstrators will be present displaying the art of tie hacking, rope making, lye soap making, basket weaving, black-smithing, flint knapping, butter churning, powder horn making, shingle riving, wood-working and more. Several demonstrations will be conducted using authentic tools throughout the day and visitors will have the opportunity to try their hand at using some of these ancient relics from days gone by. A special feature of the activities will be that visitors can bring in unidentified objects from the past and have their function explained by National Park Service Archaeologist Dr. James Price.  Dr. Price has studied, used and collected tools for generations and will be on hand to identify the mysterious items in your attic or barn from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Lieutenant James W. Remillard, acting commander of Troop I, announces the results of a special traffic enforcement operation in Crawford County that was conducted on July 3^rd between the hours of 11:00 am and 7:00 pm. During the operation the four troopers assigned stopped 45 vehicles, which resulted in 36 warnings being issued. There were five for speeding, seven for failure to wear a seat belt, one for following to closely, five non-moving traffic offenses, two for driver’s license violations and one for no vehicle insurance. On July 19^th between the hours of 5:00 pm and 11:00 pm, Missouri State Highway Patrol Troopers, with the assistance of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and the Steelville Police Department, conducted a DWI spot-check in Crawford County. The enforcement operation was conducted on Highway 8, near the entrance to the Steelville City Park. About 338 vehicles were stopped during the detail, which resulted in 81 warnings being issued. There were seven for driving while intoxicated, nine for failure to wear a seat belt, one for no child restraint, 13 for non-moving traffic offenses, three for driver’s license violations, two for no vehicle insurance, and there were five misdemeanor warrant arrest and one felony warrant arrest.

Joe Mather hit a two-run home run and Chris Carpenter allowed a run over four innings in his first start in nearly 16 months as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the free-falling Atlanta Braves, 7-2, in the third of four games at Turner Field. Carpenter, the 2005 National League Cy Young winner, allowed five hits while walking two and striking out two on 67 pitches in his first start since Opening Day 2007. Brad Thompson (4-2) allowed a run in 2 2/3 frames for the win, while Ron Villone recorded the final four outs for his first save since 2005. Adam Kennedy went 2-for-5, knocked in a run and scored twice for the Cardinals, who have won three straight and four of five overall. Albert Pujols added an RBI double, while Ryan Ludwick and Troy Glaus knocked in a run apiece. The Cardinals go for the sweep tonight at Atlanta starting at 5:50 on KSMO Radio.

Jose Guillen's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning provided the winning run, as Kansas City edged Oakland, 4-3, to sweep the three-game series with the Athletics. Guillen finished with one hit and two runs batted in, while Alex Gordon walked a franchise-record five times and Mike Aviles went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. The Royals have won four in a row overall. Ramon Ramirez (2-1) picked up the win after throwing 1 1/3 frames of scoreless relief, while Joakim Soria pitched a perfect bottom of the 10th to nail down his 30th save of the season. Kansas City starter Brian Bannister gave up two runs on eight hits in five innings of work, and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts. He also walked four on the way to posting his third no-decision in his past four starts. Kansas City next returns home for a nine-game stretch. Friday the club opens a three-game set with the White Sox.
