The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that due to lack of moisture grading is limited, however grading would be done and materials would be hauled to Dent County Road 624 in Gladden and east of Salem on Dent County Road 410.  Grading would also be done on Dent County Roads 661, 662 and 664; and a crew would be patching various chip and seal roads throughout the district. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be finishing up on the south end of Dent County Road 221, and grading would be done in the Stone Hill area.  Tune also said that brush would be cut in the Boss area. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Dent County is eligible for Low Interest Small Business Administrative Disaster loans due to cold weather. If any business is interested they need to apply no later than February 26^th, 2008. Cindy Stogsdill and Judy Martin attended the meeting to express their concerns about the availability of Prosecuting Attorney Jessica Sparks. Ms. Stogsdill has tried contacting the Prosecuting Attorney numerous times since January about her case over the death of her daughter, Jessica McCabe and the involuntary manslaughter charge filed against Michael Cameron, which goes to trial in two weeks. Ms. Stogsdill said that she did not receive a phone call back until July 25^th and it was from the secretary saying that the Sparks would try to call her back the next day, and if not then for sure on the 27^th; Stogsdill has not received a phone call. She also received no phone calls or letters informing her about two hearings that were held for Cameron in February. Judy Martin took over two months ago almost $10,000 worth of insufficient fund checks to the Prosecutor’s office and has not received a letter stating that any action has been taken. Ms. Martin has tried calling and has went to the Prosecutor’s office and no one has been available. Commissioner Tune said that money is generated through the bad check fund and he took Ms. Martin to the Prosecutor’s office to speak with someone who could answer her questions. The Commission then went into closed session. At the previous meeting, the Commission talked to Sparks about current employees who work for more than one department. Working in two departments and over 40 hours in one work week can accumulate comp hours very quickly. Due to the budget and financial reasons, Commissioner Simpson made the motion to add to the county policy that no full time employee can work in more than one department as of Sunday, July 29th at 12:01 a.m. Commissioner Tune seconded the motion and all agreed. The Commission will be speaking more with the Prosecutor and Sheriff to work on the Counties current policy. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Park Board will hold their regular meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. The board will discuss the Al Brown Fields and the softball leagues as well as field conditions. They will then discuss the completed youth baseball and softball leagues; the swimming pool and its filter replacement, fee changes and attendance; work on the new soccer fields and they will begin planning for the beginning of the soccer season. New officers may also be elected. The meeting tonight is open to the public.

A total of 32 arrests were made and 44 warnings issued as a result of a sobriety checkpoint held in Dent County, July 27, 2007. The spot check was conducted from 10:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. on Highway 19, just south of Highway 32. The arrest totals include four for driving while intoxicated and four for misdemeanor drug offenses. Traffic arrests during the spot check included eight citations for failure to wear a seat belt, one for failure to secure a child in a child safety restraint system, five for not having proper vehicle insurance, three for improper vehicle registration, and seven for driver’s license violations. Assisting the Highway Patrol at the spot check were Dent County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Salem Police Department.  During the four-hour spot check officers checked 222 vehicles.
