The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that two driveway culverts were going to be installed: one on Dent County Road 5170 and the other on county road 5410. He said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5600, 6600, 6610 and 6620; while materials were going be added and grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 6410 and 6420. He indicated that materials would also be added to county roads 6070 and 6080. Purcell did say that repairs would be made to the mower deck of the brush cutter. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 2330, while just grading was going to be done on county roads 4060 and 5300. He mentioned that materials would be added to Dent County Road 2340 and that brush was going to be cut on county road 2185. Larson reported that currently a gate is across Dent County Road 2083 on the Perry property and that road needs to be open. He said that Mr. Perry can either go through the legal procedures for the county to officially close off that part of the road, which only goes about another quarter mile, or he can remove the gate. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he would be attending a County Commissioners Association of Missouri board meeting this Tuesday through Thursday at Joplin. He said that the main focus of this meeting is to prepare for the annual three-day commissioner training to be held in February in 2014 in Columbia. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

An accident occurred on Saturday, July 13^th at 6:20 in the evening at 900 East Rolla Road in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, Jena Kebler of Salem was driving a 2007 Yamaha Breeze too fast in a field and went over a hill. The Yamaha then overturned and ejected both the driver and passenger. Kebler suffered minor injuries and was flown by Air Evac to the Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. The passenger also suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Yamaha sustained minor damage.

The Salem Police Department released a report on recent activity in Salem.  On Wednesday, July 17^th at 4:00 in the afternoon, an officer discovered a vehicle and the driver that had left the scene of an accident earlier in the day. The driver, a 26-year old Salem male, was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident, driving while drugged, driving while revoked, and damage to private property. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. At approximately 7:30 that evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation near Highway 19 and Highway 68.  The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 63 year-old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Thursday, July 18^th at 1:36 in the early morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1100 block of South MacArthur in reference to an assault. That investigation revealed that a 20-year old Salem male had assaulted a 30-year old Salem male.  He was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released.  At 7:07 that morning, an officer was dispatched to Casey’s General Store on South Macarthur in reference to a theft of fuel. That investigation revealed that a male driving a grey primer colored 90’s model Chevrolet pickup, pumped $92.01 in fuel and left without paying. Later that afternoon at 12:28, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 53-year old Rolla male for stealing merchandise valued at $22.86. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. That same afternoon at 1:30, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of West Center in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a diamond ring, valued at $1,200 from a container that was placed out for a yard sale.  At 7:23 that evening, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 400 block of West Rolla Road in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took a .22 caliber Remington Speedmaster rifle, valued at $250, from a residence. Later that night at 11:48, an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took items valued at $112 from a residence. Ozark National Scenic Riverways will host a FREE Old Time School Day at Alley Spring on Wednesday, July 31^st. Activities will begin at the Alley Spring Pavilion at 9:30 a.m. and last until noon. Alley Spring is located 6 miles west of Eminence, Missouri on Highway 106. Elementary age and older youth are invited to learn what school was like in a one-room schoolhouse in a fun environment through the participation of ranger-led activities. Please be prepared for the day with sunscreen and water bottles. Registration for Old Time School Day is preferred, but not required. To register and for additional information, call the Alley Spring Visitor Center at 573-226-3945 between 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

Pedro Alvarez clubbed a three-run homer in the opening frame as the Pittsburgh Pirates routed the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-2, in the opener of a pivotal five-game series from PNC Park. Jake Westbrook (7-5) was charged with four hits and four runs over five innings to fall to 1-8 in his career against the Pirates. Matt Carpenter and Shane Robinson each drove in a run for the Cardinals, losers of four in a row. The Cardinals and Pirates will play a double header today with the first game at 2:30 and the second one at 6:00. You can hear both games on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Royals will start a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins tonight at 7:10. The Royals are 51-51 on the year and are currently seven games back in the AL Central.

Funeral services for Bonnie Faye Coffman of Salem, age 70, will be held today at 1:00 at the Grace Community Church. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Bonnie Coffman. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Elinor K. Brewer of Licking, formerly of Salem, age 90, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family or by perennials.

Graveside services for Betty Gean Davidson of Jefferson City, formerly of Salem, age 71, will be held Wednesday at 1:30 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:00 until 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of your choice.

Memorial services for William “Bill” Penning of Cuba, age 60, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until service time Saturday.
