Rookie Ike Davis hit a three-run homer and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey went 8 1/3 innings, as the New York Mets earned a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the rubber match of a three-game set at Citi Field. Jon Jay had a double for St. Louis, which has dropped five of seven since winning eight in a row. Ryan Ludwick, Skip Schumaker and Colby Rasmus had the other Cardinal hits -- all singles.
Blake Hawksworth (4-7) worked six innings, allowing seven runs on four hits with three walks and as many strikeouts in taking the loss. The Cardinals open a three-game series tonight against the Pittsburgh Pirates starting at 6:55. You can hear the games this weekend on KSMO.
The Philadelphia Phillies completed their trade for Roy Oswalt on Thursday, acquiring the pitcher from the Houston Astros. The Phillies also received cash considerations, and sent pitcher J.A. Happ and two prospects -- outfielder Anthony Gose and infielder Jonathan Villar -- to Houston. The Cardinals had been pursuing Oswalt, but could not afford the 16 million dollar price tag per year as the Cardinals are still tring to sign Adam Wainwright and Albert Pujols beyond this year.
Ty Wigginton hit two sacrifice fly balls, including the game-winner in the 11th, helping the Baltimore Orioles snap a five-game losing streak with a 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals. Nick Markakis and Corey Patterson both homered for Baltimore. Yuniesky Betancourt had two hits and drove in a run for the Royals, who saw their losing streak reach five. Jason Kendall and Rick Ankiel each added two hits in the loss.
Kyle Davies yielded four runs (three earned) in a 5 2/3-inning start, walking four and fanning three. Blake Wood (0-2) took the loss working the 10th and 11th innings.
The Kansas City Royals have recalled pitcher Greg Holland from Omaha (PCL). They have optioned newly acquired catcher Lucas May to Omaha.
The Washington Capitals acquired left wing D.J. King from the St. Louis Blues for left winger Stefan Della Rovere on Wednesday.King, 26, has appeared in 101 games over his four seasons in the NHL, all with St. Louis, and has four goals and five assists along with 185 penalty minutes. Della Rovere was Washington's seventh-round pick, 204th overall, in the 2008 draft.
The Kansas City Chiefs have signed offensive lineman Jon Asamoah. They also placed tight end Brad Cottam on the physically unable-to-perform list.
