The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that the Bunker area received a substantial amount of rain; so two crews would be in that area patching washouts. Purcell also said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2460 and 2480 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5110. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done and rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 2150 and grading would be done and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 4050. Larson also said that a downed tree would be removed from Dent County Road 3260. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles wanted to remind area businesses and schools of the $150,00 in grant money that is available through Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management for solid waste reduction and recycling programs. The deadline to turn in a grant proposal is September 3^rd and for more information call 573-265-2993. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to inform everyone that the Dent County Courthouse will be open Saturday from 8 am until noon for absentee voting and voters must choose a party in this election. Absentee voting will continue through Monday evening and polls will open Tuesday morning at 6 am and will be open until 7:00 PM. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and is open to the public.

According to the highway patrol reports, 22-year old Anthony Flores of Salem was arrested Sunday, July 25^th at 9:10 in the morning and charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance, one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia and a warrant from Phelps County for no insurance. He was taken to the Dent County jail with no bond. On Tuesday, July 27^th at 10:12 in the morning, 21-year old Jonthon Ayers of Salem was arrested and charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Dent County jail and is bondable. Then at 11:58 that same morning, 22-year old Karla Cummings of Salem was arrested and charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance, one felony count of endangering a child and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. She was taken to the Dent County jail and is bondable.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting Tuesday, July 6^th. Bills were reviewed and checks signed. Discussion on the 2011 budget was held with directions for Chief Nash to have a preliminary budget for next board meeting. The insurance policy was reviewed and approved. Reimbursements were discussed, as paper work is not included due to the fact that there are some problems with some of the records. This will be presented at the next meeting. A total of 202 fire calls have been made to date. In old business, the district facility usage policy was presented from the committee and the Board discussed it. The policy will be a guideline for the usage of the district property with final discretion being with the Chief and the Board of directors. A motion was made to adopt the policy and the motion was carried by all. In new business, a review of the Mutual Aid agreements was held and all agreements are in place and renewed for a 1-year period. Chief Nash asked the board for money collected from insurance to be assigned to finish projects in the kitchen and training rooms. The Board agreed and requested a schedule of capital improvements be submitted. The Board accepted the resignation of Stanley McElfresh from the Board of Directors and entertained a motion for nominees. Nominees will be presented at the next board meeting. The board set the date for the next scheduled meeting, August 3^rd @ 6:00 PM at the Dent County Fire Protection District building. The meeting was then adjourned.

To gear up for the 2010-2011 school year, three students from the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) in Rolla will receive scholarships sponsored by Doe Run. Benjamin Sutton of Viburnum, a mining engineering junior, is one of the three recipients. Sutton will receive a $2,000 scholarship. Doe Run awards scholarships to students attending colleges that focus on industry majors. Sutton was a previous recipient who has met the qualifications for renewal.

The deadline to sign up for the 1^st Annual Hay Contest at the Dent County Fall Festival has been extended until today July 30^th. The Fall Festival Board in conjunction with the University of Missouri Extension in Dent County are holding this new contest. There are two main categories: small square bales and large round or square bales. Each category has five classes and University of Missouri Extension Livestock Specialist Ted Cunningham will sample the bales and submit samples to the lab for the analysis. There is a $25 cost to enter and prize money and ribbons will be awarded to the top six finishers. To enter of for more information, call Ted Cunningham at 729-3196.

Rookie Ike Davis hit a three-run homer and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey went 8 1/3 innings, as the New York Mets earned a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the rubber match of a three-game set at Citi Field. Jon Jay had a double for St. Louis, which has dropped five of seven since winning eight in a row. Ryan Ludwick, Skip Schumaker and Colby Rasmus had the other Cardinal hits -- all singles.

Blake Hawksworth (4-7) worked six innings, allowing seven runs on four hits with three walks and as many strikeouts in taking the loss. The Cardinals open a three-game series tonight against the Pittsburgh Pirates starting at 6:55. You can hear the games this weekend on KSMO.

The Philadelphia Phillies completed their trade for Roy Oswalt on Thursday, acquiring the pitcher from the Houston Astros. The Phillies also received cash considerations, and sent pitcher J.A. Happ and two prospects -- outfielder Anthony Gose and infielder Jonathan Villar -- to Houston. The Cardinals had been pursuing Oswalt, but could not afford the 16 million dollar price tag per year as the Cardinals are still tring to sign Adam Wainwright and Albert Pujols beyond this year.

Ty Wigginton hit two sacrifice fly balls, including the game-winner in the 11th, helping the Baltimore Orioles snap a five-game losing streak with a 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals. Nick Markakis and Corey Patterson both homered for Baltimore. Yuniesky Betancourt had two hits and drove in a run for the Royals, who saw their losing streak reach five. Jason Kendall and Rick Ankiel each added two hits in the loss.

Kyle Davies yielded four runs (three earned) in a 5 2/3-inning start, walking four and fanning three. Blake Wood (0-2) took the loss working the 10th and 11th innings.

The Kansas City Royals have recalled pitcher Greg Holland from Omaha (PCL). They have optioned newly acquired catcher Lucas May to Omaha.

The Washington Capitals acquired left wing D.J. King from the St. Louis Blues for left winger Stefan Della Rovere on Wednesday.King, 26, has appeared in 101 games over his four seasons in the NHL, all with St. Louis, and has four goals and five assists along with 185 penalty minutes. Della Rovere was Washington's seventh-round pick, 204th overall, in the 2008 draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed offensive lineman Jon Asamoah. They also placed tight end Brad Cottam on the physically unable-to-perform list.

Funeral services for Jimmie Lee Skaggs, Sr. of Salem, age 59, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Skaggs family.

Funeral services for Dorothy Maxine Wilson of Bunker, age 81, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery.
