The Salem R-80 School District will hold a town hall type meeting tonight starting at 5:30 in the Salem City Hall Auditorium to discuss the bond issue that will be placed on the August 4th ballot.  Superintendent Steve Bryant, Larry Hart of Larry J. Hart & Co. (the district’s bonding company) and a representative from the district’s architectural firm, Sapp & Associates out of Springfield, will present facts on the $9 million bond issue and answer questions from the public. The district is asking voters to approve the $9 million bond issue to fund building improvements, add classrooms and to turn the current junior high school into a grade six through eight middle school. If the issue is approved, the district will apply for federal stimulus money that would pay the interest on the bonds, possibly making it a no-tax increase bond issue. The meeting tonight is open to all interested persons.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports. On Saturday, July 25th at 2:40 in the early morning, a Dent County Deputy was traveling southbound on county road 6510 when he met a silver Kia Sonata traveling northbound. The Kia appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed and was on the Deputy’s side of the roadway forcing him to take evasive action and travel partially into the ditch to keep from being struck. The patrol vehicle turned around, caught up with the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The driver stated that she was coming back from Cedar Grove when she almost hit a deer and had to swerve into the other lane. The Deputy detected the faint odor of intoxicants emanating from the driver. After explaining, demonstrating and administering tests to the driver, she was arrested and transported to the Dent County Sheriff’s Department. Another Deputy remained on the scene with the other passengers until a sober driver arrived to remove the vehicle. She was later released to her brother. At 9:36 that morning, a resident from county road 4122 came to the station to report that someone had stolen her Craftsmen weed eater that was lying on her sidewalk at her residence. She did not want to press charges, but just wanted her weed eater returned. At 6:25 that evening, a Dent County Deputy was advised of a domestic assault in progress at the Ray Oaks Subdivision. Due to discrepancies about the events, the Deputy invoked the 12-hour rule and then took written statements from both parties.
