The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the courthouse for their regular meeting. In the report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported ditch work would be done on Dent County Roads 6040 and 6460, materials would be added to county roads 4245 and 4253, and a work crew would be directing traffic for West Asphalt from Sullivan to put down a single coat of chip and seal on Dent County Roads 5043 and 6380. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Road 4330, brush would be cut on county road 3200 and materials would be added to county road 2050. Larson indicated materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Road 2110. He also was going to have one man perform a full service on Grader #27 and another man would be hauling the chips for the chip and seal work. Larson said if West Asphalt completes their work in District 1 Monday, they should begin chip and seal work on Dent County Roads 3260 and 3280 today. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported on the Region I Homeland Oversight Committee meeting he attended and said there is a new SEMA representative for the Region I area and it is Brett Hendricks. Skiles stated Hendricks would be visiting with all the area county Emergency Management Directors to introduce himself. The committee reviewed the timelines and grant submissions are due by 5:00 on Friday, August 15th. Skiles felt that about $70,000 would be available in grant money for emergency responders such as law enforcement, hospitals and fire departments to apply for. For more information on these grants, contact Amy McMillan at 265-2993. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the last day to mail out a ballot for the August 5th Primary election would be Wednesday, July 30th. She also said her office would be open Saturday, August 2nd, from 8:00 in the morning until noon, and will remain open until 5:00 on Monday, August 4th for absentee voting. She also is asking if anyone has had an address change since the last election to please contact her office as soon as possible with the corrections before the polling books are printed. Her phone number is 729-4144. The commission voted to hold the tax rate hearing for the General Revenue Fund, the Road and Bridge Fund, the Senior Citizen Service Fund and the Senate Bill 40 Fund on Thursday, August 21st at 10:00. Steve Davis from Shive- Hattery Architects came in. He used to be with HMN Architects. They design justice centers and jails and he had talked with Sheriff Rick Stallings about the situation at the Dent County Jail so he wanted to stop by and see if there were any questions he could help the commission with. Peter Salazar came by the meeting and wanted to know what it would take for the county to adopt a private drive into the county road system. He was told the road would have to meet certain specifications for the county to adopt the road, but the private drive in question has been in litigation and until it is resolved, they would not get involved. Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Curley came in and presented the commission with a sample resolution for the compensation of the Dent County Collector from the proceeds provided by the City of Salem to collect the city taxes. The resolution called for the county to make a one-time payment that would include all applicable state and federal taxes. The commissioners asked Curley if he considered a one-time payment without the county paying the taxes and the issuance of a 1099 at the end of the year. He said he had been unable to find a resolution to that effect so far, but would be glad to continue to look. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley was going to try to help him find counties that compensated the collector in that way. Prosecutor Curley also asked if the county had proceeded with the easements for the John Stagner Cemetery with the county surveyor as requested by the city of Salem. Skiles said they were waiting to see if Willis Stagner had contacted the University of Missouri to see if they would use a ground penetrating radar system to determine if there are actually graves still in the cemetery. Skiles said he would follow up on that and the county could actually make the request if it hasn’t yet been done. Curley discussed options with the commission about the cemetery, but no decisions will be reached until they have more information. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners would be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting will be open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Office has released their reports. On Wednesday, July 23rd, a male reported that his four-wheeler was taken from his son’s residence at the 22000 block of Highway 32, without his consent. The four-wheeler is a green 2000 Polaris and is valued at $2,500. At 9:30 that evening, deputies were informed of a domestic assault, which had just occurred. The reporting party and victim entered the Dent County Sheriff's Office in person. The investigation led to the arrest of Michael Bauer, who was then issued a summons for 3rd Degree domestic assault and released on his own recognizance. Also that day, deputies took a report of a damaged mailbox in the 1000 block of county road 4210. Deputies responded and discovered that two mailboxes had been damaged. While speaking with the owner of the damaged property, the subject who caused the damage identified herself. The victim did not wish to press charges if the damage was repaired. The suspect agreed to repair the damage. Anyone with information regarding the four-wheeler is asked to contact the Dent County Sheriff's Office at 729-3241.
