An accident occurred at 3:45 Wednesday in Texas County on C Highway five miles North of Licking.  According to the Highway Patrol Report a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by 22 year-old Amelia C. Sands of Licking, crossed the center line on a curve and struck a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban driven by 52 year-old Ellen L. Mares of Licking.  According to the report Mares was not wearing a seat restraint and it is not known if Sands was.  Sands sustained serious injuries and Mares sustained moderate injuries.  Both drivers were transported by ambulance to the Texas County Hospital.  The Cobalt was totaled and removed by Kinder’s Towing.  The Suburban was also totaled and removed by A1 Towing.

An accident occurred at 4:10 Sunday afternoon in Crawford County on Highway WW about half a mile west of Sullivan. According to the highway patrol report, 38-year old Toni Glover of Sullivan was making a left turn while driving a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt and turned into the path of a 2006 Lincoln Zephyr driven by 30-year old Sarah Russell of Bourbon. Russell suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan by ambulance. Glover suffered minor injuries but sought her own treatment. They were both wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled while the Lincoln sustained extensive damages.

Dent County will be participating in Missouri’s annual Back-to-School sales tax holiday that begins on Friday, August 2nd and runs through Sunday, August 4th. During this time, the state sales tax will not be assessed on certain purchases, including school supplies, not exceeding $50 per purchase, that is used in a standard classroom for educational purposes, personal computers and computer peripheral devices that don’t cost more than $3,500 and clothing that does not have a value of more than $100. Any person, including those who live outside the state of Missouri who make a qualified purchase, may participate in the holiday. An individual does not have to be a student to be purchasing for a student to participate. Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that effective Wednesday, July 31st the Salem Driver Examination Station will open for both the written and driving skills tests at 9:15 a.m. The last driving skills test will be administered at 3:30 p.m. and all written tests must be completed by 3:50 p.m.

The Salem Police Department released more of their reports. On Sunday, July 14th at 12:38 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for an investigation of leaving the scene of an accident. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 43-year old male of Camdenton for driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, and leaving the scene of an accident. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. At 1:37 in the early afternoon, an officer was detailed to a parking lot near Highway 32 and Babb Lane in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took 120 gallons of fuel, valued at $442, from the tank of a gold 2003 Kenworth Truck. Later that same afternoon at 3:57, an officer located a 27-year old Salem male who had active arrest warrants from the City of Salem and the City of Rolla. He was taken into custody near the 500 block of North Jackson and incarcerated on the warrants. On Monday, July 15th at 9:45 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone entered a storage unit on Craig Drive and took items valued at $1,575. That same morning at 10:14, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a forgery. The investigation revealed that someone stole two checks, forged them, and cashed them in the amount of $150. Later that day at 4:05 pm, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a green Schwinn bicycle, valued at $400, and a blue mountain bike, valued at $100, from a storage unit on Craig Industrial Drive. On Wednesday, July 17th at 3:30 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 300 block of East Center in reference to a burglary. That investigation revealed that someone entered a residence and took clothes and jewelry, valued at $1,000. Jason Heyward went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI and Chris Johnson added three hits and three runs scored as the Atlanta Braves downed the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-2, to complete a three-game sweep at Turner Field. Shelby Miller (10-7) was charged with three runs, two earned, on six hits over 5 2/3 innings to absorb his first loss since June 28. Miller also had two hits, including an RBI double, and Carlos Beltran drove in a run for the Cardinals, who were swept for just the second time all season. The Cardinals will start a five-games series with the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio 1340 AM starting at 5:30.

The St. Louis Cardinals activated outfielder Matt Holliday from the 15-day disabled list prior to Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves. In order to make room on the roster for Holliday, the Cardinals optioned outfielder Brock Peterson to Triple-A Memphis. He played in five games after having his contract purchased on July 20.

Jarrod Dyson threw out the potential game- winning run in the 10th frame and Alex Gordon smacked a two-run homer two innings later to help the Kansas Royals complete a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 4-2 decision at U.S. Cellular Field. The Royals' sixth straight win puts them at 51-51 on the season, the latest in the year they have been .500 or better since 2003. David Lough knocked in a run and scored another while Miguel Tejada went 2- for-4 with an RBI in the win, which was credited to Aaron Crow (7-3) for tossing a perfect 11th inning. The Royals have the day off today.

Funeral services for Shirley Ann Sheriff of Salem, age 71, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the First Baptist Church in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Riverways Pregnancy Resource Center. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Bonnie Faye Coffman of Salem, age 70, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Grace Community Church. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family of Bonnie Coffman. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Elinor K. Brewer of Licking, formerly of Salem, age 90, will be Wednesday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family or by perennials.

Graveside services for Betty Gean Davidson of Jefferson City, formerly of Salem, age 71, will be held Wednesday at 1:30 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 until 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of your choice.
