The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning.  District 1 Supervisor Rusty Chamberlin sat in for District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell who was out due to a medical emergency and reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5600, 6460 and 6470 and ditch work would be done and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 4180.  District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that material would be hauled and culverts would be installed on Dent County Roads 2055 and 2130 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2330.  Larson also said that material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2050 and 4060.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he received a call from Aaron Jeffries of Missouri Department of Conservation asking the Commission if they would like to tour Peck Ranch in Shannon County where the elk were recently released.  Skiles said he would like to talk it over with the other commissioners and would like to take local media on the tour as well to report and take pictures of the area, but no definite decision was made.  Skiles also reported that he would be attending a County Commissioners of Missouri Association meeting in Columbia on August 10^th – 12^th, where the main objective would be to plan the agenda for the annual commissioners training that is held every February.  Dent County Prosecuting Attorney Sid Pearson stopped by the meeting to present the Commission with the bids he received on installing a double sliding customer window in the prosecutor’s office.  Conway Construction bid $635.00, Max Edwards bid $920.00 and Ad Par Construction bid $1,900.  Pearson went with Edward’s bid, because his bid included using safety glass.  At 10:00 the Commission opened bids for lease purchase financing for the backhoe from Fabick Equipment.  US Bank presented an interest rate of 3.91%, Bank of Salem presented an interest rate of 3.15% and Town and Country Bank presented an interest rate 3.75%; the Commission will look over each bid before making a final decision.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public. 

Bob Parsons, recently retired Salem Agriculture Instructor, was recognized with a number of awards and honors at Wednesday’s Missouri Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association Annual Awards Luncheon in Springfield.  At the luncheon, Parsons was named Missouri’s Outstanding Agriculture Teacher of the Year for 2010-11.  Presentations included a plaque and check for $1,000 from the George C. Clark Missouri Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and a Lincoln Power MIG Welder sponsored by Lincoln Electric and Harris Welding Products. Parsons also received a National Association of Agriculture Educators plaque, which was also sponsored by the George Clark Missouri Chapter of NWTF. Missouri FFA Vice President from Area 9, Samantha Whittaker, on behalf of the Missouri FFA Association presented Bob with a plaque recognizing his completion of 40 years of teaching Agriculture.  In recognition of Parsons’ retirement Farm Bureau presented him with a plaque thanking him for his years of service and commitment to agriculture and education. Dr. Richard Norris, Salem High School Graduate and Professor at St. Louis Community College-Florisant Valley, was at the lunch on behalf of Jon Hagler, Director Missouri Department of Agriculture. He presented Parsons with a framed proclamation signed by Governor Jay Nixon. Governor Nixon’s Proclamation outlined some of Mr. Parsons’ major accomplishments during his 40-year tenure at SHS. Bob’s wife, Meredith, who was honored with the Honorary State FFA Degree in April, accompanied him to the luncheon and awards ceremony.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that two special enforcement projects will be conducted during the month of August within the six-county Troop I area.  These include a DWI saturation in Phelps County and a DWI sobriety checkpoint, which will be held in Crawford County.

The SMDH Family Health Care will be offering physicals this Saturday from 8:30 until 1:30 in Physicians Office Building #2. All school aged children participating in sports activities for the 2011-2012 school year are welcome. Scheduled appointments are preferred, but walk-in appointments will also be available. The cost of the physical is a flat fee of $20 and you can pay by cash, check or credit card at the time of the physical. Parental Consent is required for any child under the age of 18. Either a parent or guardian must be present or the child must have a signed note of permission for the exam. For more information or to make an appointment, call 729-6112.

Carlos Lee went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, helping the Houston Astros defeat the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-3. Wandy Rodriguez (7-7) and the Houston bullpen set down the final 19 hitters they faced to earn a four-game series split. Albert Pujols doubled twice and knocked in a run for the Cardinals, who had won five of six before dropping the final two games of the set. Jaime Garcia (10-5) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits over six frames. The Cards start a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs starting tonight at 6:40 on KSMO.

Luke Hochevar threw seven solid innings as the Kansas City Royals salvaged a four-game series split with a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Hochevar (7-8) was facing a Red Sox team that scored 25 runs over the past two games, but held Boston to just two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six. Billy Butler smacked a three-run home run in a four-run fourth inning, as the Royals won for the sixth time in their last nine games. Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer extended his hit streak to nine games. Joakim Soria tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his 19th save of the year. The Royals start a three-game series with the Cleveland Indians tonight.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released veteran guard Brian Waters after 11 seasons with the club. Waters started 149 of the 163 games he played in for the Chiefs and was a five-time Pro Bowl selection, most recently in 2000. Waters went undrafted out of North Texas and was a rookie free agent with Dallas before signing with the Chiefs in 2000.
