The Missouri Assessment Program also referred to as MAP testing scores have been released and those results showed improvements in the Salem R-80 District as well as at the Salem Upper Elementary. MAP testing, which started back in 1993, is performed in April and is required by law. Superintendent Cindy Rumpf reported that the preliminary adequate yearly progress figures for 2010 showed that in the R-80 district, three of the four fields met the criteria and those included mathematics, attendance and graduation. The district did not meet the criteria in communications arts. Overall the district improved to a level 3 with corrective action continuing. Out of a statewide score of 67.4, R-80 came in with a 53.4 percent. The Salem Upper Elementary met the score in all four categories and received a Level 1 showing improvement. Rumpf also reported that at the Salem High School, the end of the course assessments showed a 75 percent pass rating in communication arts at the end of last school year. Biology testing was up 9% from the year before with a 59% rating compared to only 50%, and also showed that 17% of those tested, results showed them at an advanced level. Salem is also required to take a test for American Government, and the results showed that 62% of those tested received an advanced score. Rumpf also stated that the new website for the district will show the daily attendance as well as year-to-date attendance totals. Rumpf wanted to compliment as well as thank the parents, students, teachers and the administrative staff, as it is a year long, joint effort on behalf of everyone in the district working together for the betterment of the students.

At the Dent County Cattlemen’s Annual Dinner held Saturday night at the Wurdack Farm, two $500 scholarships were presented to two deserving youth. The first went to Cammie Barnitz who is a graduate of the Rolla High School, but who has been very active in Dent County 4-H activities and showed livestock in Dent County; and to Cameron Hance who is also a Rolla High School graduate. Cameron has also been very active in Dent County 4-H programs and has shown animals at the Dent County Livestock Auction. Congratulations to both these individuals on their scholarships!

The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Friday, July 23^rd at 5:30 p.m. an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to money stolen from a wallet. The investigation of the report revealed that the victim left her wallet in the restroom. Before getting back Wal-Mart to the restroom, $120 cash was stolen from the wallet. At 6:00 pm that same evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of 51-year old Salem man for driving while having his license revoked. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Saturday, July 24^th at 10:00 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for an equipment violation, which led to the arrest of a 19-year old Catawissa woman for failure to register a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was incarcerated on the charges pending the posting of bond. On Sunday, July 25^th at 1:00 p.m. an officer responded to an accident at Pershing and 7^th Street. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 31-year old Salem man for driving while being intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released to a responsible individual. On Monday, July 26^th at 10:00 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a speeding violation that led to the arrest of a 56-year old Salem man for the speeding charge and driving while having his license suspended. He was issued summons to appear in court and was released. Anyone with information on the theft report, which is still under investigation, is ask to contact the Salem Police Department, 729-4242.

The deadline to sign up for the 1^st Annual Hay Contest at the Dent County Fall Festival has been extended until tomorrow, July 30^th. The Fall Festival Board in conjunction with the University of Missouri Extension in Dent County are holding this new contest. There are two main categories: small square bales and large round or square bales. Each category has five classes and University of Missouri Extension Livestock Specialist Ted Cunningham will sample the bales and submit samples to the lab for the analysis. There is a $25 cost to enter and prize money and ribbons will be awarded to the top six finishers. To enter of for more information, call Ted Cunningham at 729-3196.
