The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports. On Sunday, July 26^th at 6:25 pm, a call came in from a residence on county road 2050. The report revealed that someone had broken into a vehicle that was parked beside an old house. The stereo had been taken from the dash, two amplifiers were removed, and speakers. Some of the items were also taken from the trunk with access gained by prying the back seat forward and bending it in the progress. Taken were a set of Bushnell binoculars in a camo case and some Buck knives. At 11:00 that evening on county road 2370, a Dent County Deputy arrested three adults and a juvenile who had spotlighted and killed a deer. The three adults, 19-year old Travis Taylor, 19-year old Ethan Curley and 20-year old Andrew Karr were each charged with three misdemeanor counts of pursuing, taking, killing, and possessing or disposing of wildlife illegally. Curley stated he was the shooter and further stated that he estimated over the past two years, they had shot about 25 deer, all of which they left except one.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports. On Sunday, July 26^th at 8:25 in the morning, dispatch received a call in reference to a possible rabid cat on Highway 19 South. Upon arrival the deputy made contact with the resident and he stated that he had gone outside to feed his animals when the cat, normally is afraid of people started walking towards him and was foaming at the mouth. The cat appeared to be extremely sick. He went back into the house, retrieved a gun and shot the cat. The deputy secured the cat and was to take the cat to the vet. At 9:44 that same morning, a resident on county road 5420 reported that her husband’s truck had been stolen. She stated that she did not remember seeing the truck upon returning home from work the night before. She stated that the truck was unlocked and the keys were on driver’s side floorboard. The vehicle was located down county road 5420 as the deputy drove over a hill. The vehicle appeared to have been driven off the right side of the roadway where it traveled down the ditch line and finally came to rest against a tree. The keys were located on the driver’s side floorboard. At 10:26 that same morning, The Salem Memorial District Hospital contacted the Sheriff’s Department in reference to a dog bite victim, a 5-year old, in the emergency room. With the owner of the dog and the parents of the victim being friends, the father shot the dog, a 7-10 year old red healer, with the owner’s permission. The dog was current on its rabies vaccination.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a burglary, thefts and property damage. On Sunday, July 26^th at 9:45 a.m. an officer was sent to the 400 block of Highway 32 West to the American Auto in reference to a burglary. The report revealed that sometime the night before, a person or persons unknown had entered the building unlawfully and taken an undetermined amount of cash. On Monday, July 27^th, several incidents occurred. The first incident occurred at 5:40 a.m. An officer was detailed to the Ranch Motel in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown had entered an unsecured motel room and took a small amount of change and other miscellaneous items without permission. The second incident was reported at 12:30 that afternoon, a female individual contacted an officer and reported being the victim of a theft. She stated she was shopping at Country Mart on Friday, July 24 during the afternoon and that $500 cash was stolen from her purse. At 1:30 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 1400 block of South Wines in reference to the theft of $97 from a vehicle. The report led to the arrest of a 23-year old Salem woman for the theft and the $97 was recovered. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. And at 3:45 Monday afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 400 block of South Hickory in reference to property damage. The report revealed that on Saturday afternoon, a 2008 Ford Focus was scratched several times with a sharp object while parked at the residence. Anyone with any information regarding the burglary, thefts or property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242. 

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Funeral services for Leon Anderson of Steelville, age 68, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Fishwick of Steelville, age 99, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Steelville Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in the Kinder Cemetery in Cuba. Memorials are suggested to the Gibbs Employee Fund or Masonic Home or Presbyterian Church of Steelville. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. 

Funeral services for David Anthony Zachritz of Steelville, age 47, will be held today at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Sanders Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

Funeral services for Pauletta “Plutie” June Scott of St. James, age 81, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Malden Memorial Park in Malden, Mo at 3:00. Memorials are suggested to the First Assembly of God Church in Rolla.
