The City of Salem Park board met on Wednesday July 23rd at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash started out his report with some new business and information he would like the board to preview and possibly take action on in the future. He asked members to serve on committee to put together a 5-year strategic plan concerning the direction of the Parks Program. Also discussed was a need for a background screening program for coaches and volunteers for all the youth programs. Finally, he made a presentation of Capitol Improvement items that were approved in this year's newly adopted budget. City Pool Manager Phil Karr reported that it has been a tough year for the pool with the mild summer we have had. He also reported that mechanically everything is working fine. The Board discussed all the sports programs (Flag Football, Soccer, Basketball and t-ball, baseball and softball) and came up with thoughts or ideas to help improve the programs. SN Ball asked about some signage for the Frisbee golf at the park and Nash would be getting that together and getting it installed in the coming weeks. The board approved moving the youth Soccer program back to the fall and running it simultaneously with Flag Football. Games for football will be played in the evenings during the week and soccer will be played on Saturdays to allow kids to participate in both programs. The Park Board recommended that there be designated smoking areas at the parks while youth programs are going on and Nash will be getting signs together and information out to make the ball fields a smoke free environment for our youth. The meeting was then adjourned.
