A total of 167 Missouri Post Offices are on the US Postal Service’s “hit list” to possibly be closed to reduce their losses. The Postal Service has initiated a plan to close 3,700 small post offices nationwide. The Postal Service said that the post offices listed for closure are not “done” deals, but they are being considered at this time. The 3,700 small post offices are about 10 percent of the total number of Post Offices in the United States. The Postal Service said that the closures are needed due to lack of revenue caused by the use of e-mail and the reduction of advertising mail because of the recession. The US Postal Service lost $58 million last year. Post offices in the immediate area that were included on the “hit list” include Bixby, Black, Jadwin, Lake Spring, Reynolds, Redford, Cherryville and Davisville. Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson responded to the announcement by saying that the financial situation facing the U.S. Postal Service should force many changes in the way the semi-public entity does business, but should not include service reductions that hurt rural communities. Emerson says that she hates to think about the ramifications of a cut-back on postal service on Americans all over the country, but especially in rural areas, where the rural community represents less than one percent of the cost of doing postal business. As Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, Emerson included language in her legislation which would both prohibit the elimination of six day delivery and the closure of rural post offices.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a theft, assault, leaving the scene of an accident, a sought individual and shoplifting. On Thursday, July 21^st at 1:00 p.m. an officer was detailed to 601 West Rolla Road to Ellerman Auto Sales in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown removed the emblems from a 2008 Chevy Impala. The emblems were valued at $25. That night at 9:45, an officer was sent to the 200 block of South Jackson in reference to an assault. The investigation revealed that two male subjects had been in an altercation. One of the subjects had left the scene. On Friday, July 22^nd at 3:00 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to 1101 West Highway 32 to Wal-Mart in reference to a leaving the scene of an accident. That investigation revealed that an unknown vehicle struck a 2008 Chevy Cobalt between 10:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. then left the scene of the accident. On Sunday, July 24^th at 2:00 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Dent County Sheriff Department in reference to an individual who was being sought on a City of Salem warrant. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 56-year old Bolivar woman on a City of Salem warrant. She was incarcerated on the warrant. Later that afternoon at 5:30, an officer was sent to 1101 West Highway 32 to Wal-Mart in reference to shoplifting. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 28-year old St. Louis man for stealing $10.97 of merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Anyone with any information regarding the theft, or assault reports as well as the leaving the scene of an accident report, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242

The contestants for the Little Jr. Miss Dent County, Little Mister and Miss Dent County, and the Dent County Baby Contest have been announced. Participating in the Little Jr. Miss Dent County contest for girls 5-10 years of age will be Kansas Wood, Deborah Barton, and Bailey Howard. Little Mister contestants include J.J. Welch, Hunter Humphrey, William Garner, and Bow Friese. Little Miss contestants are Jesslyn Damouth, Harlie Humphrey, and Lexi Wagler. The Little Miss and Little Mister Contest is for boys and girls from the age of 2 to 4. Participating in the Dent County Baby contest for babies from newborn to two years of age are Mattix Schwartz, Westyn Thompson, Laela Fann, Charlee Duncan, Danica Garner, and Madison Schwartz. These pageants will get under way on Wednesday, August 10^th at 7:30 and will be part of the 83^rd Dent County Fall Festival at the Commons on the stage.

The SMDH Family Health Care will be offering physicals this Saturday from 8:30 until 1:30 in Physicians Office Building #2. All school aged children participating in sports activities for the 2011-2012 school year are welcome. Scheduled appointments are preferred, but walk-in appointments will also be available. The cost of the physical is a flat fee of $20 and you can pay by cash, check or credit card at the time of the physical. Parental Consent is required for any child under the age of 18. The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired pitcher Edwin Jackson from Toronto in a multi-player deal that will send outfielder Colby Rasmus to the Blue Jays. St. Louis will also receive outfielder Corey Patterson and pitchers Marc Rzepczynski and Octavio Dotel from Toronto. The Blue Jays will pick up pitchers P.J. Walters, Brian Tallet and Trever Miller in addition to Rasmus. The Cardinals will also get three players to be named later or cash considerations as part of the package.

Jose Altuve knocked in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to help the Astros snap a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Cardinals. Jon Jay and Yadier Molina each knocked in a run for the Cardinals, who had won five of six coming in. St. Louis' Chris Carpenter gave up two runs on eight hits before getting pulled for Mitchell Boggs to start the eighth who took the loss and is now 0-3. The Cards and Astros play tonight at 6:40 on KSMO.

David Ortiz continued his power surge with a grand slam and Dustin Pedroia extended his career-best hitting streak to 24 games, all part of Boston's 12-5 rout of the Kansas City Royals. Bruce Chen (5-4) was charged with 10 hits and 10 runs over four innings for the Royals, and Eric Hosmer hit a three-run homer for Kansas City who will play Boston again today.
