The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a mental commitment order, thefts, and an active warrant. On Tuesday, July 20^th at 6:55 a.m. an officer transported a 53- year old male of Salem to the Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia in lieu of a mental commitment order. Later that afternoon at 2:21 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station for a report of a stolen cell phone. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a cell phone valued $100 from a residence in the 1800 block of South Oak Street. On Thursday, July 22^nd at 10:45 a.m. an officer made contact with a 28-year old female of Salem who had an active City of Salem warrant. She was taken into custody and later entered a plea of guilty, paid the fine and court costs, and was released. Later that day at 1:35 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a vehicle parked in the 300 block of East Truman Street and took a DVD player valued $200. The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5015, 5600, 6370 and 6580. Purcell also said that brush would be cut in the Wisdom Subdivision and a District 1 crewmember would be picking up a load of oil for chip and seal repair. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2120, 2370 and 5260; and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 4030.  Larson also said that rock would be hauled to Dent County Road 4330. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that at the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting that he attended last Thursday Dent County was awarded $39,000 in grant money left over from the year 2008.  Skiles said the Dent Count Sheriff’s Department was awarded $28,000 to upgrade radio capability that will enhance communication when an officer is away from their car, and the Montauk Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $11,000 to upgrade their radio system. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the last day to request a mail out ballot today and since this is a primary election, voters must choose a party. Curley also said that the clerk’s office would be open on Saturday, July 31^st from 8 am until noon for absentee voting. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

An accident happened in Iron County on Monday at 4:45 in the afternoon on Highway 49, about two miles south of Viburnum. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2008 Mercury Milan driven by 27-year old Suzanne Shelby of Viburnum, was traveling southbound on Highway 49 and traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a ditch and overturned.  Suzanne Shelby and a passenger, seven year-old Natalie Shelby, received minor injuries and were taken by Iron County ambulance to Salem Memorial District Hospital. Both occupants were wearing seat restraints and the Mercury was totaled. The vehicle was towed from the scene by Abney’s Towing. 

The 11^th Annual Back To School Fair will be held tomorrow at the Old City Hall for preschool to 12^th grade. This fair provides the children in Dent County with health screenings from the Salem Memorial District Hospital, free haircuts, dental/vision/hearing checks, socks and underwear, backpacks from the Dent County Salvation Army Service Unit and much needed school supplies. To avoid overcrowding, a time schedule has been developed this year. Families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name A-M are scheduled for 10:00 am to 12:00 (NOON); and families with the HEAD of HOUSEHOLD last name N-Z are scheduled for 12:00 (NOON) to 2:00 pm. All children receiving supplies MUST be present the day of the fair and they will not run out of supplies. The Friends of the Salem Public Library will be meeting at 5:00 on Monday, August 2^nd in the Salem Library. They will be making plans for the upcoming annual meeting and an upcoming event for the fall. All those interested in the library are welcome to attend.
