The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4245, 6010, 6040 and 6575. Purcell also said that grading would be done on Dent County Road 5600, also know as the Turtle Loop Road which is 35 miles long and a crew would be on Dent County Road 5220 continuing with the widening of that road. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2113, 3150, 3165, 4270 and 4280. Larson also said that grading would be done and rock would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2110, 3140 and 4290.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that carpeting would be installed this week in the upstairs of the Judicial Building and hopefully the Dent County Extension employees will be able to move back into their offices next week. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the clerks office has received 52 requests for absentee ballots for the August 4^th Special Election. Curley also said that the Dent County Courthouse would be closing at 1:00 this Friday, but the clerk’s office and the collector’s office would open Saturday morning from 8:00 until noon. Doug Snyder came by the meeting with some concerns about Dent County Road 3330 and Ronnie Inman stopped by with concerns about Dent County Roads 5015 and 5080. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assault, a traffic stop, an intoxicated person, and theft. On Wednesday, July 15th at 11:30 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 1000 block of South Pershing in reference to an assault. The report revealed a 26-year old Salem male had assaulted a 39-year old Salem female. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Thursday, July 16th at 6:43 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 20-year old Salem male on a City of Salem warrant for failure to appear in court. He was incarcerated on a $1,000.00 cash only bond. On Friday, July 17th at 9:07 p.m. an officer was dispatched to the Dollar General Store in reference to an intoxicated person. The report led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem male for an open beer container and disorderly conduct.  He was issued summons to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Saturday, July 18th at 8:00 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 800 block of East Ellis in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a Marlin 22-caliber rifle valued at $150.00 from the garage of a residence. On Sunday, July 19th at 11:25 a.m. an officer was dispatched to the Fourth Street Mall in reference to a theft. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a cell phone valued at $200. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

An accident happened Friday afternoon at 2:00 in Dent County on Highway 32 about three miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2009 Toyota RAV 4 driven by 42-year old Shelley Richardson of Salem, was traveling westbound on Highway 32. The Toyota ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a sign. Richardson suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem ambulance. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Toyota RAV 4 sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident happened on Thursday, July 23 at 6:00 in the evening at the intersection of Rubenstein and Oak Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a tan 1991 Honda Accord driven by Anthony Flores of Salem, accelerated from a private drive on Oak Street, lost control, crossed over the road and overturned into a ditch. Minor injuries were apparent to both Flores and a passenger and both refused treatment.  Flores was arrested for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident and DWI. The vehicle sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem.

Businesses who suffered property damage or loss from the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from May 8^th through the 16th can register for federal disaster assistance. Registration is available by calling 1-800 621-3362 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, or at www.disasterassistance.gov. In order to complete an application, the following information is necessary: a phone number, address of the damaged property, a brief description of damages, a Social Security number, any insurance information and a current mailing address. The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Businesses of any size and private, non-profit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets The U.S. Small Business Administration also sends loss verifiers to inspect damaged property of those who have submitted completed loan applications. And local building and safety inspectors may come to see if damaged structures are safe. All of these inspectors should have photo identification.

The counties in which residents are eligible to register for disaster assistance are: Dent, Shannon, Texas, and surrounding counties. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, in addition to grants for serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property. FEMA disaster assistance covers basic needs only and will not normally compensate victims for their entire loss. For those with insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered by insurance. Residents who applied for disaster assistance and are not insured can expect to hear from an inspector who will schedule a visit to look at damaged property. FEMA schedules inspections within 7 to 10 days to verify losses.

Funeral services for Leon Anderson of Steelville, age 68, will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville.  Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Fishwick of Steelville, age 99, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Steelville Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Kinder Cemetery in Cuba. Memorials are suggested to the Gibbs Employee Fund or Masonic Home or Presbyterian Church of Steelville. 

Funeral services for David Anthony Zachritz of Steelville, age 47, will be held Wednesday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 8:00 with a Masonic Service at 7:30. Interment will be in the Sanders Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
